LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Four Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women's golf teams competed this week, including two at the Division III National Spring Preview in Houston, Texas.
Some of the top teams in the nation gathered in Houston at the Bay Oaks Country Club and Southwestern Univerity and Schreiner University finished in fifth and eighth place, respectively, among the 10-team field.
The Pirates shot the fourth-best round of the day on Tuesday (327) and finished in fifth place with a two-day team total of 665 (+89). Freshman Leilani McDaniel and sophomore Valentina Olivieri-Puentes led the way as both finished tied for 19th place with a two-day total of 165 (84-81).
The Mountaineers shot rounds of 339 and 340 for a two-day total of 679 (+101). Senior Kaycee Bankert shot a second-round 79 and moved up to seventh place in the field. Sophomore Lauren Leslie turned in an 83 to go with her first round 80 and was 14th.
Texas Lutheran University registered a fifth-place finish at the California Lutheran Invitational, contested at Sunset Hills Country Club. The Bulldogs improved on Monday's 370 team score by shooting a 352 on Tuesday. TLU's ended the tournament with a two-day total of 722.
TLU sophomore Tarah Cochran posted a top-20 finish after rounds of 89 and 84, and tied for 17th.
Although Centenary did not have enough golfers to score, sophomore Jessica Varner finished fourth overall and first among four-year college golfers at the LeTourneau University YellowJacket Invitational at the Pinecrest Country Club.
Varner fired the fourth-best final round with a 3-over 75, finishing the tournament with a 151 total (+7).
