SEGUIN– The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team defeated Texas Lutheran University (TLU) 5-2 on Saturday at Ohlenbusch-Rinn Tennis Center to close out the weekend.  
 
UTRGV (3-2) took control of the match early on as it won two doubles matches. Redshirt junior Zane Kohrsand redshirt freshman Luka Jankovic picked up the 8-0 win over Matthew Stephenson and Ryan Schulte at the No. 1 spot while redshirt senior Mateo Schmit and redshirt junior Carlo Izurieta teamed up to defeat Dristan Weaver and Quintin Johnson at the No. 2 spot. 
 
The Vaqueros took a 2-1 lead after doubles using the nine-point format as Texas Lutheran picked up a point by default at No. 3 doubles. 
 
The Vaqueros continued its momentum into singles competition and didn't drop a game. Jankovic picked up a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Stephenson at the No. 1 spot while redshirt sophomore Te Kani Williams beat Johnson 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot. 
 
Schmit defeated Tyler Sargent 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot to close out the scoring for UTRGV. The matches at the No. 2 and 3 spots went unfinished once the match was clinched while Texas Lutheran picked up their second point by default at the No. 6 spot.
 
UTRGV returns to action on Feb. 9 when it hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, at 12 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
Seating at UTRGV home tennis matches is limited to 25 fans. Limiting the capacity allows for proper social distancing among fans, staff, and student-athletes. 
 
Face masks are required to be worn properly by all fans, media and staff present inside the Orville Cox Tennis Center. The CDC defines wearing a mask correctly as covering the nose and mouth and securing it around the chin, trying to fit in snugly against the side of the face. The CDC does not recommend using masks with an exhalation valve or vent. Neck gaiters, bandanas and similar items are not acceptable alternatives to face masks. Children ages 2 and under are not required to wear masks.
 
Restrooms at the Orville Cox Tennis Center will be closed to the public to limit access into the Tier 1 section.
