Men's Lacrosse Defeats Centenary To Advance To SCAC Championship Game

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Southwestern men's lacrosse scored the first 10 goals of its contest against the Centenary Gentlemen, winning 28-4 to advance to the SCAC Championship game on Sunday.

Eight different Pirates scored multiple goals in a balanced, multifaceted offense directed by senior attacker Zac Asbury. Southwestern's all-time leader in points added 10 more to his career total, scoring three goals and assisting on seven others to bring his career points total to 253.

Southwestern set the tone in the first period, scoring the game's first goal less than a minute in when Asbury found Tyler Johnson, putting 14 of its 16 shots on goal, scoring nine with back-to-back goals by Jacob Hamilton to close out the period while limiting Centenary to a single shot attempt.

The Pirates scored first in the second period, with Tyler Santos finding Asbury for his second goal of the game. John Mark Waniewski put Centenary on the scoreboard off a feed from Kyle Comi at the 10:56 mark. Twenty-two seconds later, Hamilton responded with his third goal to secure the hat trick. Waniewski scored his second goal of the period—and Centenary's final goal of the half—on an assist from Blake Federico.

Southwestern responded with a 6-0 run to close the half with a 17-2 lead.

Asbury opened the second half with a hand in three of the Pirates' first four goals in the third period, finding Brady Middleton to open the half, scoring on a pass from Matt Caldwell, and then finding Benjamin Libby for the 20-2 lead. Waniewski scored for the third time in the game on a man-up goal with 3:11 remaining in the third. Johnson responded with a goal while playing a man down.

The Pirates opened the fourth by taking advantage of Centenary penalties, scoring two man-up goals and six of the period's seven goals overall.

Hamilton and Cody Foster led the Pirates with four goals each. Asbury and Johnson had three. Libby, Jack Carolan, Caldwell, and Blake Sitterly each scored two, and Jack Doloszycki, Conor Beckett, Ryan Sambogna, Middleton, Logan Kenny, and Tommy Saueressig had one goal each.

Southwestern pressured Centenary the length of the field, limiting the Gents to just 12 clears on 22 opportunities. The Pirates were dominant in face-offs, winning 28-of-35. The Pirates also produced a 57-18 advantage in ground balls. The Pirates caused 15 turnovers, led by Will Thompson and Caldwell, who forced three each.

The Pirates improve to 7-4 with the win. Southwestern advances to the SCAC Championship game, where they'll face the defending champion Colorado College Tigers on Sunday, May 2.
