Schreiner, who dropped its final regular season match six days ago to the Celts, upped its record to 8-9 and will face top-seeded Trinity at 1 p.m. CT tomorrow in the day’s opening semifinal – a match that will be played at Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex at SMU. St. Thomas finishes the 2024 campaign with a 5-6 record.
The Mountaineers jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles as the second line of Daniella Rodriguez and Mackenzie Griffin secured an 8-2 victory and the third line of Rachel Rompel and Katherine Bergeron won 8-5 to give the Mountaineers the edge going into singles.
St. Thomas’ Lucia Rodriguez evened the match at 2 all after her 7-5, 6-1 win over Schreiner’s Victoria Morales at the No. 2 line, but Griffin gave the advantage right back to the Mountaineers with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at the No. 5 line.
Back-to-back wins, however, by St. Thomas’ Ella Mullins (7-5, 6-3) and Jenny Reynolds (7-6, 6-0) at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, tipped the margin to 4-3 in favor of the Celts with two matches remaining on the court.
After Schreiner’s Bergeron’s 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles evened the match at 4-4, all eyes shifted to the top line between the Mountaineers’ Hannah Reyna and the Celts’ Anamaria Gonzalez. After securing a 6-2 opening set win, Schreiner’s Reyna closed out the match with a decisive 6-0 win in the third set – propelling the Mountaineers into the semifinal round for the first time since 2021.
