Bruce Reed, University of Dallas, Men's Cross Country - Character & Community

BRUCE REED OF UNIVERSITY OF DALLAS, a freshman on the men's cross country team from Belton, Texas, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning December 4.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Bruce is involved in a variety of activities in his local community.  Two things have been of paramount importance in his life: athletics and faith, and Bruce has committed to giving back to these communities.

“As a kid I ran for TAAF (Texas Amateur Athletic Federation) and at the AAU (Amatuer Athletic Union of the United States) Junior Olympics, and now that I’ve become an adult I want to go back and show others what’s…driven me and come to enjoy,” said Reed.  He has spent summers and winters working with both organizations as well as with the Cool Running Elite Track Club in Temple, Texas to coach and mentor young athletes.

Bruce’s Catholic faith has been the foundation of his life; it’s part of what drew him to the University of Dallas and what drives him to be an active member in his church community.  He has done everything from teaching catechism classes, to sponsoring his brother’s Confirmation, to helping with classroom renovations for his local church.

“Without my community, I wouldn’t be where I am today.  It has allowed me to grow and mature and, honestly, be where I am, so I want to give back what it has given to me.”
