Centenary's Bennett and Snell Highlight Men's Golf Postseason Honorees

SUWANEE, Ga. -- In exclusive voting by the head coaches and sports information directors of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), the league office today announced the 2024 men's golf postseason award winners. 2024 All-SCAC Men's Golf Team

Andrew Bennett of Centenary College was named SCAC Golfer of the Year, while his teammate, Chance Snell, earned Freshman of the Year honors. In that same balloting, Schreiner University head coach, Alan Baxter was named SCAC Coach of the Year.

Bennett, a senior from Bossier City, La., put together an outstanding season, highlighted by a nine-stroke victory and medalist honors at the SCAC Championships back in April. His nine-stroke win was the largest margin of victory at the SCAC Championships since Zach Oliver of Schreiner won by 10 shots back in 2014. A Third Team PING/GCAA All-American and GCAA All-Region performer, Bennett is the first Centenary men’s golfer to earn All-American honors since Hal Sutton in 1980. Last month, Bennett earned the first invite in Centenary men’s golf history in the Division III era into the NCAA Championships, where he played one round before he was forced to withdraw due to illness. Named SCAC Men’s Golfer of the Week back in September, he finished the year ranked 11th in the country and second in the region in the latest Clippd rankings after securing three medalist honors, four top-three finishes and an adjusted scoring average of 72.3.

Bennett is the first Centenary men’s golfer to earn SCAC Men’s Golfer of the Year honors in program history.

Snell, a freshman from Shreveport, La., finished the year with an adjusted scoring average of 73.9 over 17 rounds of action during the 2024 season for Centenary, finishing second and tied for fourth on the Gents’ roster this year. He earned four top-10 finishes in eight events including a pair of top three finishes, highlighted by his First Team All-SCAC performance at the SCAC Championships when he finished in third place alone. Snell, who finished the year 191st nationally and 45th regionally, was the lone freshman in the SCAC Championship field to post a top 10 finish.

Snell is the first Centenary men’s golfer in program history to earn SCAC Freshman of the Year honors.

Baxter earned Coach of the Year honors after leading Schreiner to the 2024 SCAC Men’s Golf Championship, and a berth in the NCAA Division III Golf Championships field. It marked the program’s third SCAC title and trip to the NCAA Championships in the last decade. At the national championships tournament which was contested at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada, the Mountaineers made the cut, shot a final round 290-team score – their second-best of the tournament – and finished with a four-day sore of 1,160, good enough for 10th-place in the 43-team field. The Mountaineers’ 10th-place finish was the best SCAC team finish at the National Championship since Schreiner claimed seventh at the 2015 Championships.

Back in April at the White Bluff Golf Resort, the Mountaineers led wire-to-wire, pulling away over the course of the final round to earn the 2024 Men’s Golf Championship title. Consistency was key for the Mountaineers in this year's run to the program's third title this decade as three of the team's golfers finished in the top eight and all five squad members finished in the top 15.

In his fifth season at the helm of both Mountaineers’ golfing programs, the SCAC COTY honor is the first for Baxter and third in Schreiner men’s golf history. Baxter joins former Mountaineers coach Ron Macosko who earned the honor in back-to-back seasons in 2014 and 2015.
