MADI MEDUNA OF UNIVERSITY OF DALLAS, a junior on the women's golf team from Waterloo, Neb., has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning February 19.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Madi has been a part of the UD family for a long time, with her dad being a student-athlete alum who played on the men’s basketball team. She made the decision to attend UD her junior year of high school and has been locked into the community ever since.

She has taken on a variety of roles on UD’s campus that encompass all facets of life. As a biochemistry major who plans to attend medical school, becoming a chemistry tutor on campus was a no brainer for Madi. Not just because it keeps her sharp, but also because she enjoys helping others.

“As a biochem major, I thought I can help freshmen and sophomores who are just getting into college classes and learning how to study and how to approach problems,” said Meduna. “I genuinely enjoy it and I enjoy helping people.”

Madi also jumped at the first opportunity to serve as a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, now in her second year as a member. “I enjoy being on the board, working with other athletes here and trying to get involved in what’s going on on campus…I enjoy trying to be a part of the community, not just on my team but with other athletes.”

Madi doesn’t just serve the UD community, but is also active in serving the local community in Irving as a member of the Barbara Bunch club on campus. The Barbara Bunch pairs UD students with children from the local Barbara Cardwell High School for one-on-one mentoring once a week, working with disadvantaged or struggling students as role models and someone they can work with to get through high school and pursue higher education in the future.

“It’s really fun to talk to high school students," said Meduna. "I remember being a high schooler and not feeling like I had a ton of guidance or knew what I was doing next, so just being able to talk to someone who was in college would have been so great.”

Madi finds great fulfillment in serving others, and the service she has done while at the University of Dallas has only helped to solidify her future plans of going to medical school. “You’re not doing it (practicing medicine) alone, you’re working with others, so having that community environment where we’re there to help each other and we’re all trying to strive for the same common goal is great, and I feel like my experiences as a student athlete well help me to approach those situations.”
