The Mountaineers fired a third-round team score of 298 (+10) and carry a three round cumulative score of 870 (+6) into the final 18 holes. As a team, Schreiner made the turn to the back nine just two over par on the afternoon but combined nine bogies and one double bogie to post a 10-over team score of 298. Schreiner, which started the third round in fifth-place now finds itself 12-shots back of a top-five position going into the final round.
Defending national champion, Carnegie Mellon surged to the top of the team standings after firing the second lowest team score (280) on Thursday and will take a one-shot lead over Methodist and Redlands.
Drew Hermesmeyer continues to pace the Mountaineers after firing his second 1-over round of 73 in three days and sits tied for 10th with a three day total of 212 (-4) going into the final round. Hermesmeyer finished his third round with three birdies, pushing his weekly total to 14, tied for third most in the field. He trails current leaders Michael O’Sullivan of Oglethorpe and Brett Viator of Huntington by just five shots going into the final day of competition.
John Martinez, who continues to lead the entire field in pars made, now with 42, is currently tied for 37th to round out the Mountaineers in the top 50. Martinez’s three-round total of 217, following his second round of 73 in the last three days is just four strokes off of jumping into a top-20 position.
The final day of competition starts Friday morning as Schreiner is scheduled to tee off at 8:00 a.m. local time. The Mountaineers will be pair with former SCAC members Oglethorpe and Washington & Lee.
