WHITNEY, Texas -- No. 16 Trinity University continued to put the hammer down on Monday, firing a second-round 305 (+17) to open a 26 shot lead heading into tomorrow's final day of the 2024 SCAC Women’s Golf Championship which is being contested on The New Course at White Bluff Golf Resort. Tomorrow’s third and final round at the par-72, 5,688-yard layout will begin at 8:35 a.m., with the leaders scheduled to take the tee around 9:15 a.m. The women will start from the No. 10 tee.
This is the first year the women have played a 54-hole tournament since the 2012 championships.
The three-time defending champions of the event, Trinity doubled up on its lead from Sunday, finishing with a second-round total of 305 (+17) and a two-day total of 620 (+44) to move to 26 shots clear of second-place Southwestern University, who finished Monday's round with a team score of 318 (+30). The Tigers two day total is the lowest in conference history, besting the former mark of 627, which Trinity shot at the last two championships (2022 and 2023) when the event concluded after 36 holes. The former two-round record in a 54-hole event was 321, which had been posted by Southwestern at the 2008 and 2009 championships.
The Pirates' two-day total of 646 (+70) puts them nine shots clear of University of St. Thomas who sits in third place after rounds of 331 and 324 and a two-day score of 655 (+79).
Trinity continued to take advantage of the par fours and has gained 20 shots on the field on those holes. The Tigers also lead the field in pars (104) and birdies (11).
Individually, four Trinity players are in the top 10, with Erin Flynn continuing to lead the way. The senior fired a 76 for the second consecutive day and continues to reside in second place on the leaderboard at 152 (+8). Sophomore Jessica Mason had the best round of the day for Trinity and moved from fifth to third with her second-round 74. She is at 153 (+9) for the tournament. Senior Kiona Hsiu {pictured} is in fifth with a two-day total of 157 (+13) and junior Alejandra Sanchez De le Fuente Molino moved three slots up the leaderboard after her second round 76 placed her at 159 (+15) for the event.
Southwestern senior Ryleigh Erickson continues to lead the championships, backing her first round 74 with a second round 73, the second-lowest second round score in tournament history and the lowest ever in championships that were contested over 54 holes. The senior, who finished eagle-birdie-par to complete her round, has carded a two-round total of 147 which is the lowest in conference history. The previous mark of 148 was established by Trinity's Kiona Hsiu when she carded a 148 to win the 2022 event.
Erickson's 73 also bested her career scoring mark at the conference championship for the second consecutive day. After her round Erickson spoke about her second-straight career day.
Dallas junior Kimberly Burch carded a second round 78 (+6) and sits in fourth place alone at 155 (+11) among the 33-person field.
Rounding out the women's first-round team standings, University of Dallas is in fourth place, improving by 20 shots with a second round 337 and sit at 694 (+118) heading into Tuesday. Schreiner University is fifth with 726 (369-357), Texas Lutheran University is sixth with 780 (394-386) and Centenary College is seventh after posting a two-day total of 821 (406-415).
On the individual leaderboard, other golfers in the top 10 are the St. Thomas duo of junior Emma Luna and senior Trinity Le who are sixth and eighth, respectively. After both fired opening round 82s, Luna carded a 76 on Monday to stand at 158 and Le shot a 81 to sit at 163. Southwestern teammates first-year Sydney Jackson and sophomore Sloan Panter are in ninth and 10th, respectively, with two-day totals of 164 and 166. Jackson's second-round 80 was the team's second-best round of the day behind Erickson.
