Schreiner Takes Eight Shot Lead Into Final Round of SCAC Men's Golf Championship

Tuesday's third and final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. CT on the par-72, 6,918-yard layout with the leaders teeing off at 9:20 a.m.

The 16th-ranked Mountaineers, who are seeking their first SCAC men's golf championship since winning back-to-back conference titles in 2014 and 2015, have three players in the top 10, led by graduate student Drew Hermesmeyer, who fired his second consecutive 73, to post a two-round total of 146 (+2) - good for fourth place. Sophomores Matthew McKenzie and Colin Perez, who both had opening round 73s, are in sixth place and tied for eighth place, respectively. McKenzie had a 76 and sits at 149 (+5) and Perez carded a 79 to stand at 152 (+8) heading into tomorrow's final round. 

Schreiner leads second-place Trinity by eight shots after following Sunday's opening round 294 with a second round 305 to total 599 (+23) heading into tomorrow's final round. The last time Schreiner led the SCAC championships after two rounds was in 2015, the last time the Mountaineers hoisted the conference crown.

The Trinity University men fired the low round of the day, totaling 303 to shave two strokes off Schreiner's lead heading into Tuesday. The Tigers are at 607 (+31) and lead third-place and defending champion University of St. Thomas by three shots. The Celts have produced rounds of 301 and 309 and are at 610 (+34) with Tuesday's final round yet to play.

The next four teams are all within three shots of each other, with the host school, Southwestern University, currently fourth at 619 (+43). Centenary College and Texas Lutheran University are both tied at 621 (+45) and University of Dallas is just one shot back from that group at 622 (+46).

Centenary senior Andrew Bennett, who led after his first round 71, backed up his initial effort with another one under round of 71 and is second with a 142 (-2). His teammate, first-year Chance Snell, carded the second sub 70 round of the day with a 69 is in third place at even par 144. 

The dual rounds in the 60s marks just the fifth time in conference history and first since time since 2021, two players have posted sub-70 scores in the same round.

Rounding out the top five individual leaderboard, Dallas junior Rex Soulliere is fifth at 148 (+4) after following his opening round 72 with a 76.

St. Thomas has two players in the top 10 as sophomore Zach Allen is in sixth and first-year Antonio Ramirez is tied for eighth with scores of +6 (74-76--150) and +8 (77-75--152), respectively, with Ramirez moving up eight spots from his first round standing. Southwestern sophomore Ethan Bridges leads the Pirates and is tied for eighth with a group of four golfers at 152. Junior Tobey Wills of Texas Lutheran paced the Bulldogs and is also part of the group tied for eighth at +8 (74-78--152).
