COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The undefeated Colorado College volleyball team spent some time bonding away from the court on Monday when it volunteered with the Ronald McDonald House Charities.
“It was really cool to work as a team outside of the gym
doing something greater for our community,” said senior
Meredith Ballard. “It really brought us together off the
court and we got some good chemistry going now, but it felt good to
get out there and do something that would bring us together and
would also help our community.”
While at the Ronald McDonald House the team helped to complete a
variety of projects for the charity including: yard work, cleaning,
disinfecting toys and helping the families who reside in the
home.
“Volunteering shows that we have more in our lives than just
volleyball,” said senior Haley Hamilton. “We want to
use our passion for something besides the game and get out in the
community and show passion for helping out other people.”
The Ronald McDonald House offers a home-away-from-home for families
who have seriously ill children in the Southern Colorado area and
are being treated at Memorial Hospital for Children or at St.
Francis Medical Center.
The House gives families who have children being treated a
comfortable and affordable place to live. It also offers a
supportive and alternative setting for these families in need.
It’s a temporary home near the hospital where they can sleep,
eat, relax and find encouragement from others.
The Ronald McDonald House Charities also provides a family room
inside the hospital where families can regain their energy while
remaining near their children, a mobile clinic designed to provide
medical and dental care to under-insured/not insured children
throughout Southern Colorado, grants to children's organizations
throughout the region and scholarships to underprivileged
students.
“It was important working together towards something that is
bigger than us,” said senior Amy Schornack. “We want to
serve people and do what we can to help them.”
The volleyball team will continue its efforts with the Ronald
McDonald House Charities by collecting donations during the SCAC
Central Intra-Pod tournament on Oct. 8-9 in Reid Gymnasium. The
team would like fans to bring non-perishable items to any of the
home matches during the weekend.
