Volleyball Recap (Week 1) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - The 21st season of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference volleyball began the week of August 29-Sept. 4 and saw Trinity and Southwestern knock off ninth-ranked Wisconsin-Platteville.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College got off to a solid start in 2011, winning their first three matches of the season before dropping a pair to Hardin-Simmons and Wisconsin-Platteville, both teams that made the NCAA tournament last year. The 'Roos topped St. Gregory's 3-0 to start off the year and followed up with a 3-2 come from behind victory over Mid-America Christian, and topped East Texas Baptist 3-1 before falling to HSU and UWP by scores of 3-0 and 3-1, respectively. Jessi Fleming led the 'Roos with 3.0 kills and 1.21 blocks per set and Kelly McDaniel added 1.68 kills with a .350 hitting percentage and 6.79 assists per set. McDaniel also added 2.58 digs per set while Adrienne Reynolds led the team with 3.95 digs per set.
  
Birmingham-Southern hosted the McK Attack Tournament to open the season and won all four matches to win the tournament, defeating LaGrange and Piedmont on Saturday, and Huntingdon and Stillman on Sunday. Junior Shelby Moore was named Tournament MVP after recording 44 total kills over the four matches with a .356 attack percentage. Junior libero Presley Dickson and junior setter Lauren Reibe joined Moore on the All-Tournament Team. The Panthers travel to Atlanta this weekend for the Doc Partin Classic, hosted by No. 2 Emory University.

Centre traveled to Southern California to open up its 2011 season at the Pomona-Pitzer invitational. The Colonels began the season 2-0 by beating Lasell College of Massachusetts in three games and then winning their match against the host school, Pomona-Pitzer, in four games. Day two was almost a flip of the first day with the Colonels dropping both their matches by identical 0-3 scores to Augsburg College and Chapman.

No. 13 Colorado College went 4-0 to open the 2011 season and win the tournament title of the 2011 Molten Pikes Peak Challenge that it hosted on Sept. 2-3 in Reid Gymnasium. Two members of the Colorado College volleyball team reached milestones to open the season with a 3-0 win over Howard Payne University. Senior setter Amy Schornack became just the second player in program history to record 3,000 career assists with an assist in the match's first kill for the Tigers. Head coach Rick Swan earned his 300 win as CC swept Howard Payne. The Tigers finished the tournament with wins over SUNY New Paltz (3-1), Gustavus Adolphus College (3-2) and Westminster College (Mo.) (3-0). Schornack was named the tournament MVP, while freshman Kristen Liberty and sophomore Devin Wilkinson were both named to the all-tournament team. CC will be back in action next weekend when they host the Molten Colorado College Invitational on Sept. 9-10 in Reid Gymnasium.

Dallas posted a 4-1 record in the opening week of volleyball play as it defeated Sul Ross State 3-0, Polytechnic (N.Y.), 3-0, Milwaukee School of Engineering, 3-0 and Centenary, 3-0 after dropping the season opening match against Texas-Dallas, 3-1. The Lady Crusaders are back in action on Sept. 9-10 when they travel to fellow Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference member Austin College to participate in the Austin College Classic.

Hendrix went 2-2 as they hosted the 2011 Hendrix Classic at Grove Gymnasium over the weekend. Williams Baptist topped Hendrix 3-1 in the tournament opener. Junior Melissa Clement paced the Warriors with 14 kills and a .429 hitting percentage. 3-0 sweep over LeTourneau, Clement hit .516 with 17 kills and sophomore Zoe Calhoun had 32 assists and nine digs. On Saturday, UT Tyler defeated Hendrix 3-1. Freshman libero Ella Concavage-Nasar came up with 19 digs in that match. The Warriors closed out the tournament with a sweep against Central Baptist. Freshman outside hitter Kylee Spicer hit a blazing .750 with 12 kills and no errors on 16 attempts to go with four aces. For the weekend, Spicer hit a team-best .364 and Clement averaged 3.29 kills per set. Concavage-Nasar averaged 4.14 assists per set. The Warriors host Central Baptist again on Tuesday night, then will travel to Memphis for the Rhodes Invitational where they will face Belhaven, Augustana, Ripon and Principia.

Millsaps got off to a good start this past weekend, going 3-2 over tough competition in their opening week. In the first game against Tugaloo, the Majors wasted no time, crushing the Bulldogs 25-11, 25-12 and 25-8. Junior Kasey Laird led the way with 12 kills. In their first home tournament, the Majors dropped a highly contested match against Faulkner in straight sets before returning that night to dominate New Orleans in straight sets. Laird and junior Raven Scott led the way in game two with 10 kills each and junior Mackenzie Westphal added eight. Scott also added on 22 assists and seven digs. Freshman Taylor Zeigler added 17 assists and two huge aces. The next day the Majors fell to Spring Hill 3-1 before bouncing back and knocking off rival Mississippi College in straight sets. The Majors travel to Memphis this weekend to compete in the Memphis Invitational.

Oglethorpe went 0-2 in their first week of the season, losing home matches to Brenau (L, 3-0) and Covenant (L, 3-1). The Petrels are back in action this week at Reinhardt on Tuesday (Sept 6) and play a tournament hosted by Berry College this weekend.

Rhodes began its 2011 season at the Millsaps Invitational and split its first four matches. The Lynx beat Mississippi College 3-1 on Sept. 2nd before dropping a 3-2 decision to Martin Methodist. On Saturday, Rhodes was on the short end of a 3-1 match with Faulkner (Ala.) before finishing the two-day event with a 3-0 win over the University of New Orleans. The Lynx are back in action on Sept. 9-10 when they host the Rhodes Invitational. 

After winning only two matches last season Sewanee opened 2011 with a 3-1 mark after hosting the Sewanee Invitational. Overall, Sewanee defeated Fisk, Andrew College and Rust. Individually, freshman Jamie Sue Wilson led the charge with a team-high 34 kills and nine digs.

No. 14 Southwestern opened the season in impressive fashion, winning their first three contests including a four set win over ninth-ranked Wisconsin-Platteville. SU opened up with Hardin Simmons at home on Friday evening. SU easily won in three. The following day the Pirates faced off with East Texas Baptist at the Trinity National Invitational. Southwestern once again dominated in three sets behind the arm of outside hitter Allison Stubbs. Stubbs' 22 kills in the match set a new SU record for kills in a three-set match. UWP was able to steal the first set from Southwestern but the Pirates rallied back and won three straight to win. SU hits the road to play four games at the Cal-Lu-fornia Invitational.

No. 16 Trinity opened up the season with a 5-0 record, winning four home matches, and taking the Co-Championship of its Trinity Fall Classic Tournament over the weekend. The Tigers finished 3-0 in the tournament – including a win over ninth-ranked UW-Platteville on Friday night. Trinity also defeated NAIA scholarship school Loyola-New Orleans 3-2 earlier in the day on Friday, coming back from an 0-2 deficit to take the victory. Trinity continues its tough schedule this weekend, facing off against two more of Division III's top teams in second-ranked Emory and seventh-ranked Eastern. The games are played at Emory as part of the Doc Partin Classic, and the Tigers will also play Wheaton (IL) and Faulkner.
