Southwestern's Nicholls Named AVCA First-Team All-American

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Southwestern University senior setter Christina Nicholls, the 2011 SCAC Player of the Year, added another award to her growing trophy case, earning first-team All-America honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association in an announcement made Tuesday. Complete Release

Nicholls was the only SCAC student-athlete to earn first, second or third team honors.

A senior from Austin, Texas, Nicholls led the Pirates to an undefeated regular season conference mark (14-0) and an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament. She ranks 16th in the nation in assists per set, averaging 10.64 per set which is also tops for the Pirates while being second on the team in aces (30) and fifth in blocks (56). Nicholls was selected as SCAC Player-of-the-Year and First Team All-SCAC selection after leading the conference in assists and was named as the national Division III Player-of-the-Week by D3VB on November 2nd. This is her first All-American honor after making it as an honorable mention the past two years.

Her teammate, junior outside hitter Rachel Thibodeau, received honorable mention All-America honors this year.

Other SCAC student-athletes recognized as 2011 honorable mention All-Americans include Trinity teammates Maggie Emodi, a first-year outside hitter, and Catharine Found, a senior right side/opposite. Senior setter Amy Schornack of Colorado College earned All-America honorable mention honors for the third consecutive year.
