Volleyball Recap (Week 3) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Centre College hosted its annual Centre Classic during the weekend of Sept. 17-18. The home-standing Colonels finished the week with a 3-1 overall mark. Conference play begins the weekend of Sept. 23-25 as teams will begin vying for seeding at the 2011 SCAC volleyball tournament later this season.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College went 2-1 on the week with 3-0 wins over Philander Smith and Rhodes sandwiched between a 3-0 loss to Division II Christian Brothers. The Kangaroos now sport a 9-5 overall record and begin SCAC play this weekend hosting the SCAC West Division Inter-Pod.
  
Birmingham-Southern went 1-4 last week, losing to West Alabama on the road and then going 1-3 at the DePauw Tiger Invitational in Greencastle, Ind. On Friday, the Panthers lost to Illinois-Wesleyan and Baldwin-Wallace, and on Saturday they defeated DePauw but fell to Rose-Hulman. BSC is at home for a mid-week match against Martin Methodist this Wednesday before beginning conference play at the East-Central crossover in Sewanee this weekend.

Centre hosted their annual Centre College Classic on Friday and Saturday September 16 and 17. The Colonels started off Friday by winning their matches against Kenyon College and Marietta College in five games; these were the fourth and fifth straight matches that the Colonels have played to five games. On Saturday morning the Colonels took on Defiance College and lost in three straight sets. Later on Saturday Centre took on a much improved Fisk University team and won in three straight sets to end the weekend 3-1 overall.

No. 14 Colorado College
went 1-3 over the weekend during the 2011 Molten Colorado College Invitational that it hosted on Sept. 16-17 in Reid Gymnasium. The Tigers faced a tough schedule during the tournament, falling to three ranked teams. CC held Endicott College to a season-low .033 hitting percentage to beat the Gulls, 3-1 to start the tournament. Senior Amy Schornack got her third-career triple-double against Endicott with a team-high 40 assists along with 10 digs and 10 kills. She also led the team at the net with four blocks. The Tigers finished the tournament with losses to No. 2 Washington University (3-0), No. 9 Juniata College (3-1) and No. 15 Concordia College (3-0). Junior Kate Squires – an all-tournament selection – led the Tigers on offense with 31 kills over four games. Colorado College hits the road for the first time this season, playing at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs on Sept. 21. The Tigers then travel to Sewanee, Tenn. to open conference action on Sept. 24-25.

After starting the season 4-1, Dallas dropped four consecutive matches at the Austin College Tournament. This week, the Lady Crusaders were able to bounce back, winning two matches at home on Saturday, Sept. 17, and now once again sit over a .500 winning percentage. Dallas defeated Texas College in three sets in their first match, and then dismissed Mid-America Christian University in four sets to wrap up the week. Up next, the team will venture out to Sherman, Texas, for a road match versus Trinity to begin conference play on Friday, Sept. 23.

Hendrix
went 2-2 as they hosted the 2011 Hendrix Fall Classic over the weekend. Hendrix took a two sets to none lead over Williams Baptist in Friday’s opener, but the Lady Eagles came back to win in five. The Warriors outhit WBC .203 to .192, but the Lady Eagles had more kills (56-50) and aces (15-7).Junior Katie Bates and freshman outside hitter had 12 kills each and sophomore Zoe Calhoun recorded 45 assists. Freshman libero Ella-Concavage-Nasar came up with 17 digs. Hendrix rebounded to sweep Huntingdon on Friday night, recording season-bests with a .365 hitting percentage and 14 aces. Clement hit .556 with 11 kills and Bates hit .583 with eight kills in the match. Hendrix began play on Saturday with a sweep of Rust. The Warriors outhit the Lady Bearcats .288 to .063. Clement had 16 kills and hit .483 and sophomore middle blocker Alyssa Jaksich recorded 10 kills. Concavage-Nasar had 16 digs. The tournament ended with a four-set loss to Ouachita Baptist. Clement led the way with 14 kills and a season-high seven blocks.

Millsaps'
four game winning streak came to a close last Tuesday evening as they fell to the Loyola Wolfpack in four sets. Loyola, playing in their home opener, used tremendous defense as five players earned double digit digs. Junior Kasey Laird led the way offensively with 12 kills while juniors Mackenzie Westphal and Raven Scott added 10. Senior Maggie Tumminello and junior Kasey Laird paced the defense, picking up 15 digs each.

Oglethorpe
went 1-2 this past week, falling at Shorter 3-0 on Wednesday before splitting a tri-match versus Coastal Georgia (L, 0-3) and Andrew College (W, 3-0) on Saturday. The Petrels are now 2-8 on the season and will travel to face Covenant College this Wednesday evening in Lookout Mountain, Ga.

Rhodes
went 1-2 on the week losing to Division II opponent Southern Arkansas and Austin College in non-conference match-up. The team’s lone win came against Philander Smith. Outside Hitter Meagan Mansfield led the team in kills this week while Libero Maraia Tremarelli continues to anchor the team’s defense averaging over 5 digs per set.

Sewanee
split a pair of non-conference matches last week. First, the Tigers earned a 3-2 win at Agnes Scott, before falling to Covenant at home, 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-18).

No. 9 Southwestern
faced their toughest competition to date at the Trinity National Invitational and went 2-2 on the weekend to move to 9-2 on the year. Southwestern started hot, posting a .385 team hitting percentage in the first set against No. 7 St. Thomas en route to a 25-23 win. St. Thomas was shocked into action and easily won set two, 25-11 over the Pirates. Set three went to SU 25-20 and after a long, drawn-out battle in the fourth set St. Thomas brought the game back even with a 28-26 win. The Pirates were able to win the fifth and final set on a total team effort. Day two SU started off against Texas Lutheran University and SU posted a 3-1 win The Pirates were defeated 3-1 by Occidental. Southwestern opens SCAC action this week at the SCAC West Divisional #1 in Sherman, Texas.

Trinity
went 1-3 at its National Invitational tournament over the weekend, facing off against three nationally-ranked opponents. The Tigers lost to #28 Occidental and seventh-ranked St. Thomas on the first day of action, then fell to eighth-ranked Carthage 3-1 on Saturday. Trinity was the only team to win a set from Carthage during the weekend of play. The Tigers finished the two-day event with a 3-0 win over Texas Lutheran. Maddy Hazelwood was named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts, pacing the Tiger offense with a .477 hitting percentage in the four contests. Trinity will open SCAC play this weekend at the SCAC West Divisional #1 on Friday and Saturday.  The Tigers face Dallas on Friday, followed by Austin College and 10th-ranked Southwestern on Saturday afternoon.  The tournament is in Sherman, Texas.
