SCAC Opens up Competition at the 2012 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The 2012 NCAA Swimming and Diving National Championships got underway today from the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI, hosted by Franklin College and the SCAC was well represented. RESULTS | CHAMPIONSHIP SITE

A pair of seniors, Jordan DeGayner of Colorado College and Colleen Maggard of Centre College competed in the 50-yard freestyle. DeGayner finished 22nd in a time of 22.76, just a tenth of a second off from qualifying him for the consolation finals. Maggard placed 32nd after posting a time of 24.11.

In the Women's 500-yard free style, sophomore Clark Weber of Centre finished just outside all-American honors placing 22nd with a time of 5:04.04. Sophomore Melanie Gustafson of Trinity University claimed 31st in the country with a time of 5:06.62.

Senior Courtland Day, junior Phillip Link and sophomore Astrid Escobar - all of Sewanee - swam in today's 200-yard IM. Day took home 44th place with a time of 1:59.44 while Link finished just behind Day claiming 45th posting a time of 1:59.66. On the women's side, Escobar swam the event in a time of 2:15.81, good enough for 43rd in the country.

In the lone relay team representing the SCAC, junior Holly Oatman and freshman Hadley Judson joined Maggard and Weber of Centre to swim in the women's 200-yard medley relay. The first relay team to represent the Colonels at nationals since 2009 posted a time of 1:50.27, which was good enough for 28th.

The 2012 NCAA Championships continue through Saturday.
