SUWANEE, Ga. - In the only two games of the week, Millsaps and 18th-ranked Trinity came away with conference wins over Austin College and Sewanee, respectively. Elsewhere, Birmingham-Southern entered the D3football.com Top 25 for the first time in school history during it's off week this week.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College fell to 0-6 on the year and 0-3
in conference play with a 33-27 loss to visiting Millsaps on
Saturday. The Majors used 283 second half yards and 23 second half
points to hold off a late charge by the 'Roos led by freshman Noah
Jesko, making the first start of his career. Jesko completed
15-of-29 passes for 228 yards while throwing for two touchdowns and
running for two more to lead the way offensively and Jordan Schell
caught four passes for 132 yards, including a 66 yard touchdown
reception in the first half. Kenneth Eneh and Justin Ontiveros each
recorded 12 tackles for Austin College and Sean Sweeney made nine
stops and broke up four passes and also had a big day on kick
returns, including a 66 yard return to set up a 14 yard Jesko
touchdown run. The 'Roos are off this week and will return to
action on October 22 when they travel to Memphis to take on
Rhodes.
No. 24 Birmingham-Southern (5-0, 2-0 SCAC) had the weekend
off. The Panthers, who over the weekend entered the D3football.com
Top 25 for the first time in program history (#24), return to
action on Saturday, Oct. 15 when they host undefeated conference
rival Centre College at 1 p.m. Last year in Danville, Ky., the
Colonels outscored BSC 21-7 in the second half enroot to a 35-28
come-from-behind win. Quarterback Jimmy Stainback and running back
Shawn Morris combined to run for 167 of the Panthers’ 251
rushing yards. The duo also combined for three rushing touchdowns
in the loss. The last two meetings between the two teams have been
decided by a total of eight points.
Centre (4-0, 1-0 SCAC) had the weekend off. The Colonels
prepare to travel to Birmingham for a game with 24th-ranked
Birmingham-Southern on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. Last year in
Danville, the Colonels outscored the Panthers 21-7 in the second
half and held on for a 35-28 comeback win. Tyler Osterman completed
19-of-26 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Centre
is 4-0 against Birmingham-Southern since the Panthers reinstituted
football in 2007.
Millsaps racked up 507 yards of total offense en route to
a 33-27 win over the Austin College Kangaroos. The win brings
Millsaps overall record to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the SCAC. Junior
quarterbacks Konner Joplin and Garrett Pinciotti combined to go
24-for-37 for 328 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore running back
Thomas Theriot picked up his second straight 100-yard game rushing
for 175 yards on 28 carries and a touchdown. Junior receiver Jason
O'Rear also had his second straight 100-yard receiving game
catching nine passes for 167 yards and a touchdown. Defensively,
junior Marvis O'Sirio eight tackles, three tackles for loss, three
pass breakups, and a sack. Freshman Zach Bell had a huge game
picking up three tackles, all for losses and two of them for sacks.
Sophomore Jonathan Moore picked up his third interception of the
year. Millsaps will be back in action this weekend as they return
home to face the Rhodes Lynx.
Rhodes (2-2, 0-1 SCAC) had the weekend off and will
prepare to travel to Jackson, Miss. for a game against Millsaps.
Last year the Lynx dropped a 70-31 game to the Majors in Memphis in
the highest scoring game in CAC/SCAC history. The 101 total points
eclipsed the previous record of 99 points when Centre beat Rhodes
56-43 on Sept. 15, 2001. Millsaps outgained Rhodes by a 596-395
margin and quickly jumped out to a 49-17 halftime lead before
earning the historic win. Rhodes was led by Tyler Perkins. Perkins
accounted for 273 total yards (176 passing/97 rushing) and three
total touchdowns. The Lynx last beat the Millsaps on Nov. 8, 2003
when Rhodes earned a 35-3 victory over the Majors. Millsaps has won
seven straight in the series.
In its first road SCAC game of the season
Sewanee struggled in a 27-9 loss at No. 18
Trinity. With the loss the Tigers fell of 0-3 this season in
conference games. Overall, the Tigers' offense failed to reach the
200 yard rushing mark for the second straight week. At the same
time one of the biggest differences in the game was Trinity's
ability to score on each of its trips inside the red-zone
(4-for-4). Individually, senior fullback Zeke
Wilson led all Sewanee running backs with 43 yards on five
carriers, while sophomore Dave McKeithen had a game-high
11 tackles at his linebacker position. Sewanee will look to
pick up its first SCAC win this coming week as DePauw comes to the
Mountain for a 1 p.m. kickoff October 15. Overall, Sewanee is 1-12
against DePauw. Sewanee's only win came in 1999. Last season DePauw
outlasted Sewanee 35-7 in route to its SCAC
title.
No. 18 Trinity remained unbeaten with a 27-9 SCAC win over
Sewanee on Saturday afternoon, improving its winning streak to 19
games in this series. The Tigers are now 5-0 for the 12th time in
school history, with all but one of those coming since the 1994
season, and the last time being the 2008 season. Trinity and
Sewanee started slow, scoring just three points each until late in
the second quarter when Trinity made it 10-3. The game was 13-3
early in the fourth quarter when Trinity broke the game open with
two touchdowns in less than a minute. Next week, Trinity will host
Huntingdon College (5-1) in a non-conference showdown. Last
season, Huntingdon handed The Tigers a 56-30 loss. Trinity still
leads the series with a 2-1 record, having won back-to-back games
in 2005 and 2006.
