TYLER, Texas - Trinity University first-year players captured the USTA/ITA Division III Women's Southwest Regional Singles and Doubles titles Sunday afternoon in all Trinity match-ups.
Tiger newcomer Mackenzie Knoop won the singles crown with a 6-2,
6-1 victory over sophomore teammate Kylie Hornbeck at Summers
Tennis Center.
Knoop later teamed with fellow first-year Stephanie Williamson to
beat Tiger seniors Katie Griffith (Spokane, Wash./Ferris) and
Kassie Seger 6-1, 6-1.
Next up for Knoop and Williamson, who transferred from Lee
College, will be the ITA National Small College Championships Oct.
13-16 at Mobile, Ala.
The singles semifinals also belonged to Trinity players earlier in
the day. Knoop beat junior Thavindra Ekanayake 6-4, 6-2; and
Hornbeck was a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 winner over Griffith.
Trinity will host the USTA/ITA Division III Men's Southwest
Regional Championships Friday, Sept. 30-Sunday, Oct. 2. The opening
day will be held at San Antonio's McFarlin Tennis Center, and the
remaining part of the tournament is set for Trinity's remodeled
courts.
