SUWANEE, Ga. - The 2011 SCAC Women's Soccer Tournament hosted by Birmingham-Southern is set to begin Friday as the fourth-seeded Lynx of Rhodes will take on Hendrix at noon CST. The winner of that game will meet the top overall seed Trinity on Saturday. Host Birmingham-Southern, the second overall seed, will face the winner of the Centre and Sewanee game in a battle of the third and sixth seeded teams.

Austin College split their final two matches of the season, falling 2-0 to Trinity on Friday before topping Southwestern 2-0 on Sunday to finish the season with an overall record of 7-8-1 and a conference mark of 3-4-1. Against Trinity, the 'Roos hung tough thanks largely to the outstanding play of first year keeper Maya Warnock, who shut out the Tigers in the first half before yielding a pair of second half goals. Warnock finished with 12 saves in the game. Against Southwestern, Natalie Nelms scored just 2:10 into the game for what would turn out to be the game winner on assists from Kelsey D'Amore and Ali Ryan, and Ryan scored a goal of her own 23 minutes later. Warnock made seven saves in the win to get her eighth shutout of the season.
Birmingham-Southern wrapped up the regular season at home this week with a 4-1 win against Sewanee on Friday and a 0-0 tie with Centre to claim the second seed in the upcoming SCAC Women's Soccer Championship. BSC is now unbeaten in its last five games. This weekend's tournament, which BSC is hosting, will be the first-ever post-season appearance for BSC in the Division III era after a four-year transitional period with no post-season play.
#22 Centre earned a win and a tie in games played this weekend. Friday afternoon, Centre posted a 3-0 victory over Oglethorpe in regulation play. In the match, Centre Sophomore, Claiborne Willis earned her first-ever career hat-trick. Sunday, Centre played Birmingham Southern to a 0-0 tie in double overtime. With the result, Centre set a school record for Most Shut-outs in a Single Season with 12. Centre also clinched the No. 3 seed for the SCAC Conference Tournament. The Colonels face Sewanee in a quarterfinal match Friday, November 4 at 2:30pm CST. Centre completes regular-season play at 12-3-2 overall and 5-2-1 in SCAC play.
Dallas (11-7-2, 2-5-1) ended their season this week, playing two SCAC games at Crusader Field. On Friday, the Lady Crusaders fell to Southwestern University, 1-0. The tightly contested affair saw great goaltending by both sides, but in the 88th minute, Southwestern's Hannah Neil was able to net the game-winner from a Maria Pollifrone assist. The loss was tough for Dallas, as the team needed to win their remaining two games to assure a spot in the SCAC Women's Soccer Tournament. On Sunday, Dallas took No. 3 Trinity University to overtime, but the fierce offensive Tiger attack prevailed in the 94th minute to spoil 'Senior Day' for Dallas with an unassisted golden-goal score by Stephanie Segovia. Dallas' sophomore goalkeeper Brigid Hasson was outstanding in defeat, however, recording eleven saves.
Hendrix did not compete in the final week of the regular season. Hendrix went 8-8-1 overall and 4-3-1, tying for fourth place in the SCAC. The finish was the highest for the Warriors since they placed fourth in 2001. Hendrix leads the SCAC with 135 saves and 7.94 saves per game. Junior midfielder ranks sixth in the league with 23 points and tied for sixth with nine goals. Senior keeper Allison Mosley is first with 93 saves and junior Megan Childress is tied for ninth with 39.
Millsaps with their four seniors leading the way, put up four goals in the second half as they tied the Rhodes Lynx 4-4 on a bitter Saturday evening. Rhodes got things going early on as they went up 1-0 on a Beth Ann McCloskey penalty kick which was only scoring of a dull first half. Things heated up quickly in the second half as junior Margaret Eggers scored two goals, one in the 47th minutes and another in the 68th to put Millsaps up 2-1. Rhodes responded with a goal from Melissa Coquelin to tie the game up. However, sophomore Tara Johnston put the Majors up again in the 74th minute as she netted a long goal to put Millsaps back up 3-2. Rhodes looked like they were going to escape at they scored two goals in three minutes to extend their lead to 4-3. Millsaps did not quit though as freshman Taylor Winslow drew a foul in the box with 15 second remaining. Junior Kaleigh Redhead put it away to tie the game at four and send the game to overtime. Neither team could find a goal in the extra time and the match ended in a draw.
Oglethorpe finished their season by dropping their final two contests to Centre (L, 3-0) and Sewanee (L, 7-2). On Friday, the Colonels, ranked No. 22 in the nation, controlled the pace en route to the win. The women's soccer team lost to Sewanee in their season finale on Salamone Field on Sunday afternoon, 7-2. The Tigers raced out to a comfortable lead with three first half goals on their way to the win. Sewanee made the score 4-0 in the 49th minute before Oglethorpe got their offense going with some nifty passing to get on the scoreboard just six minutes later. The strike came when senior Jordan Weaver hooked up with Clara St. Urbain on a through ball that St. Urbain finished brilliantly. The Petrels added a second tally in the 65th minute when senior Kristen Koch converted on a Tiger miscue in the box and pounded one home. Prior to the game the Petrels celebrated Senior Day for their seven graduating seniors: Elvira Hernandez, Kim Overmier, Sasha Alonzo, Eliza Newland, Jordan Weaver, Kristen Koch and Alexandria Vassell. Oglethorpe finishes the season with a 2-11-1 overall record.
Rhodes tied Millsaps on the final game of the 2011 regular season 4-4. The Lynx took the lead in the 1st half when Beth Ann McCloskey converted a penalty kick. In the 2nd half Rhodes and Millsaps traded goals, but neither could find the decisive game winner. Melissa Coquelin, Kelsey Keown, and Lara Flink scored for the Lynx in the 2nd half. Rhodes returns to action in the SCAC tournament this weekend as the #4 seed. They will play Hendrix at noon with all games being played at BSC.
Sewanee split a pair of SCAC matches over the weekend. Sewanee lost at Birmingham-Southern Friday, before rebounding with a 7-2 win at Oglethorpe, Sunday. In their match Sunday, the Tigers had a season-high in goals and shots. Individually, freshman Bobbe Chaffin netted her first career hattrick after she scored three goals, all in the second half. Sewanee will now start its quest for a 2011 SCAC Championship, as they open the conference tournament Friday. The sixth seeded Tigers will play third seeded Centre November 4th at 2:30 p.m. in Birmingham.
Southwestern closed out the season this weekend by going 1-1 on the road at Dallas and Austin College Friday and Sunday. With less than two minutes on the clock Southwestern's Hannah Neil scored the only goal of the game to lift the Pirates past the University of Dallas Friday afternoon. On Saturday SU couldn't get their offense going and two early goals by Austin College allowed the 'Roos to focus on defense as Southwestern fell 2-0. The Pirates close out the season in ninth place in the conference with a 2-5-1 record and finish 8-7-2 on the year.
#3 Trinity secured the top seed in the SCAC Championships Tournament with a pair of SCAC wins on the road last weekend, going 3-0 overall for the week. Trinity opened the week with a Monday night win over Huston-Tillotson University. The Tigers won 7-0, but the real highlight was Abby Loar's record-breaking goal to start off the scoring. Loar became Trinity's all-time leading goal-scorer with Monday's game-winner, breaking the record of 52 goals set by Becky King (1997-00). Loar had tied the record against Hendrix on Sunday, and also broke the school record for total points scored. Over the weekend, Trinity used a pair of second-half goals to beat Austin College, then needed overtime to get past Dallas 1-0. It was the third overtime win of the season for the Tigers, and the game-winner was scored by Stephanie Segovia. Segovia has now scored 22 goals this season, which is tied for the second-most in school history for one year. She is just two away from tying the all-time record set by Tara Dillon in 1991. Her 49 points this season are also tied for the third-most in school history, just eight away from the Tiger record of 57 (alsoDillon, 1991). Trinity will play the winner of Rhodes and Hendrix in the second round of the SCAC Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
