Football Recap (Week 7) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - In a match-up of two of the three unbeaten teams left in the SCAC, it was Centre that prevailed over 24th-ranked Birmingham-Southern in a key SCAC clash. The Colonels scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to beat the Panthers, 45-20 in Birmingham.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College (0-6, 0-3 SCAC) had the weekend off. The Kangaroos return to action on Saturday, Oct. 22 when they when they travel to Memphis to take on Rhodes. Last year in Sherman, Texas, Austin College held on for a 17-16 win over the visiting Rhodes Lynx. Leading the way for the Kangaroos was Greg Harrell who caught five passes for 126 yards and a touchdown. Harrell’s17-yard touchdown with just over one minute left in regulation gave Austin College the one point win. It marked the third consecutive win in the series for the ‘Roos. Since joining the SCAC  prior to the 2006 season, Austin College is 3-2 against Rhodes.

Birmingham-Southern took its first loss of the season on Saturday at the hands of Centre, falling at home 45-20. Junior tailback Shawn Morris scored twice for BSC, breaking the career touchdown record in the process. The Centre defense held BSC scoreless in the second half, while the Colonel offense scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to stretch the lead for the eventual win. Junior quarterback Jimmy Stainback was 9-of-15 with one pick and 103 yards, and he also led with 90 yards rushing. Morris recorded 80 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, and also had three receptions for 43 yards. Senior Dustin Massey led the BSC defense with eight tackles (seven solo, one assisted), including two tackles-for-loss, and sophomore Ty Keenum also recorded eight tackles (five solo, three assisted). The Panthers are off this week but return to action against No. 18 Trinity on Saturday, Oct. 29, at noon in San Antonio, Texas.

Centre
remained undefeated knocking of No. 24 and previously undefeated Birmingham-Southern 45-20 in Birmingham, Ala. Centre led 28-20 at the half, but out-scored the Panthers 17-0 in the second half to improve to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the SCAC. The Colonels out-gained Birmingham Southern 455-304 on the day, including a 300-103 advantage in the passing game. Senior quarterback Tyler Osterman recorded a season-high 300 yards passing for his third 300-yard passing game of his career. The 5-0 start marks the second time in the last three years and only the second time since 2001 the Colonels have won their first five games. Centre returns home to host Sewanee as part of Homecoming Weekend.

After falling behind 28-16 at halftime, Millsaps came out firing on all cylinders as they mounted a second half comeback highlighted by 28 consecutive points en route to a 44-36 win over the Rhodes Lynx. The win moved the Majors overall record to 4-3 and keeps them in striking distance in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings at 3-1. Junior quarterback Garrett Pinciotti was sharp as he went 18-for-34 with 282 passing yards and two touchdowns along with an interception. Sophomore Thomas Theriot added 94 yards rushing on 19 carries while junior wide receiver Jason O'Rear picked up his third consecutive 100-yard game as he had seven catches for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, junior linebacker Jeb White and senior safety Jordan Nolan each led the team with 10 tackles. The freshman trio of Nick Ehrhardt, Jeff Milner, and Leland Elchos each had a sack. The Major defense held Rhodes to 113 yards of total offense in the second half. Millsaps will enjoy a bye week next weekend before returning to action on Oct. 29th for Homecoming as they will take on Centre at 1 p.m.

Rhodes
had its two game winning streak snapped in a 44-36 loss to Millsaps. The Lynx jumped out to a 28-16 halftime lead thanks to senior quarterback Brett Stoots. Stoots threw two first half touchdowns, completing 19 of 27 passes for 228 yards. The Majors rattled off 28 unanswered second half points to take a 44-28 fourth quarter lead. Millsaps scored on a block punt and had two interception returns for touchdowns. Rhodes rallied to make it 44-36 on a Chris Rose 15 yard touchdown run and a two point conversion pass from Tyler Perkins to Jack Lartigue. However, the Lynx final drive stalled on their last possession. Rhodes welcomes Austin College to Fargason Field on October 22 for a 2 p.m. homecoming kickoff. Rhodes is currently 2-3 overall for the season and 0-2 in the SCAC.
 
With its 30-7 win over DePauw, Saturday Sewanee (3-4) has won three games for the first time since the 2005 season. Also with the victory the Tigers earned their first victory over DePauw (1-4) since 1999. In the contest, Sewanee dominated defensively.  The Tigers held DePauw scoreless on offense, while forcing two fumbles, two interceptions and five sacks. Overall, Sewanee outgained DePauw by 108 yards (348/240), while outrushing DePauw by 156 yards on the ground. Sewanee's defense also limited DePauw to a 26 percent completion percentage. Individually, Sewanee had six running backs average over four yards per carry. Leading the way was senior slot back Ben Cleveland, who tallied 54 yards on just six carries, while on defense, junior linebacker John Davenport played well with eight tackles and one sack. This week Sewanee will look to win its first conference game at Centre. The Tigers have not beat the Colonels since 2005.
 
No. 17 Trinity improved to 6-0 with a 24-7 non-conference win over Huntingdon College on Saturday afternoon – a victory that also prompted the team’s rise into the D3Football.com national poll (#23) as well. The Tigers shut down a Hawks team that was averaging nearly 40 points/game coming into last week. Trinity’s defense gave up just a first-quarter score, and nothing more the rest of the day. The Tigers forced four turnovers in the game to key the victory. Trinity plays its final non-conference game of the regular season this week, traveling east to play LaGrange College on Saturday afternoon. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
