Men's Soccer Recap (Week 4) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - In the final weekend before conference play gets underway, the SCAC picked up three wins over nationally ranked teams. Trinity and Southwestern both knocked off 13th ranked Chapman while senior Aaron Walker of Oglethorpe slotted a free kick side netting in overtime to defeat 21st ranked Maryville on the road.

- AROUND THE SCAC -

Austin College fell in a heartbreaker on Sunday in the team’s lone game of the week, falling 1-0 in overtime to Rogers State University. The ‘Roos are now 4-2-2 overall this year. After taking a scoreless game into overtime, Rogers State found the net on a header off of a corner kick at the 92:55 mark to hand Austin College just its second loss of the season. Grant Gosselin had an outstanding game in goal, making six saves, including several spectacular point blank stops to help the ‘Roos get to overtime. Austin College heads out on the road this weekend when they travel to face Oglethorpe and Birmingham-Southern.

Birmingham-Southern
played only one game this week, losing to Berry College at home on Sunday, 2-1 in double overtime. Senior Garner Shivers scored BSC's lone goal, assisted by senior Tony Crocker. The Panthers are at home again this weekend, opening conference play against Dallas, Friday night, and Austin, Sunday afternoon.

Centre
hosted two games this past week, taking on #24 Thomas More College on Tuesday night and Covenant College on Saturday night. On Tuesday night, Centre and Thomas More battled to a 0-0 (2OT) tie. The Colonels defense and senior goalkeeper Chris Jackson (Oxford, OH) combined for the shutout in an extremely competitive match. Then on Saturday night against Covenant, junior midfielder Ryan Garvey (Louisville, KY) scored the sudden-death game-winner in double-overtime off a set piece from Jeremy Smith (Cincinnati, OH), securing a 1-0 (2OT) win for the Colonels. Again Jackson and the Centre defense went for the shutout, their fourth in a row, bringing the team's season GAA to just 0.90. With the tie and win, Centre's record improved to 5-2-1 on the season. The Colonels open up SCAC play this week, hosting #6 Trinity University on Friday night and Southwestern University on Sunday.

Colorado College completed its non-conference schedule with a 5-1-3 record after recording a 1-1 tie at Division II Fort Hays State University on Friday and a 3-2 overtime victory at Nebraska University on Sunday. Nick Lammers scored in the 72nd minute to help Colorado College salvage a 1-1 tie at Fort Hays State University. The junior defender found the net for the first time this season on a set piece off the foot of junior forward Matt Fechter. Junior goalkeeper Forrest Marowitz finished with a season-high six saves to give the Tigers a chance to rally. CC, which arrived two via bus two hours before the game, played a man down for the final 14:47 after sophomore forward Lorenzo Pozzolini was given a red card early in the first overtime. Junior forward Daniel Wright recorded the first multiple-goal game of his career in Sunday’s overtime win against the PrairieWolves. He opened the scoring off a feed from Fechter in the 21st minute, then struck for the second game-winning goal of his career 8:13 into overtime off a through ball from junior defender Ben Sandalow. Junior defender Kyle Buchwalder sent the match to extra time when he scored on a header off a Fechter corner kick in the 74th minute. Junior goalkeeper Brian Graf made a pair of saves while improving to 5-0-0. The Tigers improved to 2-0-3 in overtime this season. The last time the CC went undefeated in overtime was 2008 when it posted a 2-0-1 record. Colorado College begins Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play next at Rhodes College and Millsaps College next Friday and Sunday, respectively.

Dallas (2-3-1) in their singular game of the week traveled to Batesville, Ark., to square off with the Scots of Lyon College (Ark.). Down 2-0 in the first half, the Crusaders rallied with a 40th minute score (Nathan Nwaeze) and a 45th minute strike (William Sanchez) to knot the score 2-2. Dallas, however, could not tack on another goal and fell in overtime, 3-2. Up next for the Crusaders is a trip to Birmingham, Ala., for an 8 p.m. tilt versus Birmingham-Southern College on Friday, Sept. 30.

Hendrix recorded a split on their trip to Claremont, Calif. over the weekend. The Warriors (4-2-2) lost to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (5-2) 3-2 on Friday, but rebounded to shutout Pomona-Pitzer (4-4) 4-0 on Sunday evening. In Sunday's win, junior forward Connor Silvestri netted a hat trick and freshman Greg Gandy scored his first career goal. Silvestri, the Warriors' leading scorer with nine goals on the year, put the first goal of the game in on passes from senior Duncan Keegan and junior Grant Womack. Gandy drove a beautiful, left-footed volley in to the upper corner to give Hendrix a 2-0 lead in the 62nd minute. Silvestri completed the hat trick with goals in the 69th and 74th minutes.Senior keeper Adam Legg recorded three saves in 76 minutes and freshman Joe Esrock stopped one shot in 14 minutes. Senior defender Ian Evans stopped a shot by clearing a ball that got past Legg while Hendrix still led 2-0. Against CMS on Friday, the Warriors had a 2-1 lead, but the host Stags scored a pair of goals in the final three minutes to win 3-2. After an early goal by the Stags,  Silvestri tied the game in the 29th minute and Keegan put the Warriors up in the 37th minute. CMS scored goals in the 87th and 88th minutes to win the game. Legg recorded six saves for Hendrix. Tim Park had three saves and Daniel Roberts added two for CMS.The Warriors will open Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday at Millsaps, then play at Rhodes in Memphis on Sunday.

Goalkeepers Dylan Broussard and Stephen Andrieu have played 268 minutes and have not given up agoal in that allotted time. This time, Andrieu completed a shutout as the Millsaps Majors men's soccer team traveled to Huntingdon and knocked off the Hawks 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in their only game of the week. Millsaps held the ball throughout the first half, taking seven shot to Huntingdon's three. It seemed that the two teams were going to head into the half scoreless until the 44th minute when sophomore Michael Pellisier sent a corner kick into the box and finding junior Alex Szabo who put it away for his first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead. It was all the Majors needed as they took the win for their second of the season.

 

Oglethorpe stepped out of conference this past week to pick up two wins, one over Covenant College (W, 4-1) and the other over No. 21 Maryville College (W, 3-2 in OT). Against Covenant, the game was Knotted shortly after halftime at one apiece before the Petrels busted the game open with a series of three dazzling second half goals to notch their second straight victory. Oglethorpe got on the scoreboard first early on when Aleksander Tanjga intercepted a half-hearted clearance attempt by the Scots and cracked it into the back of the net. The score remained the same until an attacking Covenant squad equalized early in the second stanza. From there, the teams battled across the pitch for the next 15 minutes before the Petrels opened things up with some set piece dramatics. The Petrels pinned the Scots deep in their territory and won a corner kick on the far side of the field by the dormitory parking lot in the game's 70th-minute. Sophomore transfer from Presbyterian College Sean King played a perfect ball into the box which Jeff Arsenault headed authoritatively into the back of the net for the 2-1 lead. Less than 8 minutes of clock time later, King placed the ball on the near side of the field for another won corner by the Petrels. This time his strike found the head of sophomore Nick Williamson who headed home yet another for a two goal advantage. Freshman Phillip Rawson applied the icing to the cake in the 85th minute when he shook free just past midfield and fired a laser from 35 yards out that went through the top shelf past the defenseless Scot keeper. Against Maryville, the game was a tense affair that featured Oglethorpe trying to hold onto a lead for much of the game, followed by a wild finish. The Petrels got the scoring started in the 29th minute when Jakub Madej finished off a feed from Aaron Walker. The Petrels held this 1-0 lead for the majority of the game. Into the final 10 minutes the game went with Oglethorpe still holding onto their one-goal lead. But Maryville was finally able to equalize in the 82nd minute.However, the Petrels got the goal back just over a minute later. Carlos Gaston tallied the goal in the 83rd minute, giving the Petrels a 2-1 lead. This lead lasted less than two minutes, though, as Maryville equalized again in the 85th minute. The game went into sudden-death overtime, and it didn't take long for the Petrels to finish it off. In the 96th minute (the sixth minute of overtime), Walker scored directly off a free kick from just outside the penalty area, giving the Petrels the 3-2 victory. Walker finished with a goal and an assist, and Madej and Gaston had a goal each. The win improves the Petrels to 6-2 on the year. They will next be in action this weekend, when they will host Austin and Dallas in the first conference weekend of the season.

Rhodes went 0-1-1 on the week as the Lynx failed to find the back of the net. Rhodes tied Principia 0-0 in a double overtime affair and lost a tough 1-0 result to Westminster on Sunday. The Lynx return to action hosting a pair of conference tilts against Colorado College and Hendrix.

The Tigers continued their stellar play this past weekend with wins over Tennessee Temple (4-0) and Piedmont (4-2). Overall, Sewanee sits with a 5-1-1 record this season. Since their opening 1-0 loss against Mississippi College the Tigers have a six match unbeaten streak. During this stretch head coach David Poggi's squad has outscored its opponents 17-5. Leading the charge for the Tigers are senior forward Matt Lightfoot and junior midfielder Sam Edoung-Biyo. Lightfoot added three goals over the weekend, while Biyo added a pair of goals and an assist.

Southwestern
had a light week of action that had a big impact as they defeated #13 Chapman University on Sunday afternoon. A constant barrage of shots and patient, possession soccer led to the win. Evan Perkins was huge in the game as he scored three straight goals for the Pirates as Southwestern shocked the Panthers by taking a 3-0 lead through 53 minutes. Chapman continued to attack but the defensive line held strong until Mauricio Alfonso was able to sneak one past Southwestern's defense with a shot from 30 yards out that bounced off the right post and into the left netting. Max Oldham and Timothy Eamma teamed up in the 73rd minute to give SU some more breathing room and put the game out of reach for Chapman as Southwestern held on to the three goal lead to win 4-1. The Pirates improve to 3-4-1 on the year while Chapman falls to 6-3. The match marks the end of non-conference play for Southwestern as the Pirates open SCAC Conference action on Friday at Sewanee and continue on to Centre on Sunday.

#5 Trinity
defeated #13 Chapman University 8-0 in a matchup between the NSCAA’s top two teams in the West Region.The Tigers scored three times in the first half – including a goal just five seconds before halftime – then exploded for five goals in the second half to finish off the victory. Josh Adams and Aaron Olson had two goals each in the game, and Adams got the eventual game-winner in the opening minutes. Trinity will host the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday night, followed by a weekend road trip in the SCAC. The Tigers will take on Centre and Sewanee on Friday and Sunday, opening conference play.
