Austin College dropped its two matches over the weekend, falling 3-1 to Oglethorpe on Friday before suffering a 4-1 defeat at Birmingham-Southern on Sunday. The ‘Roos are now 4-4-2 overall this year and 0-2 in conference play with the pair of losses. Oglethorpe scored all three of its goals in the first half, but the ‘Roos got on the board early on a goal by Chris Stein on assists from Chris Melton and Edwin Cole and Austin College had several chances to narrow the gap, but two penalty kicks were saved to keep it a 3-1 margin. Against Birmingham-Southern, the Panthers scored just four minutes in before Andy Johnson equalized in the 9th minute of action, but Birmingham-Southern would score three unanswered goals to close out the game and hand the ‘Roos the loss. This weekend the ‘Roos are home for a pair of games, starting with Komen Game V against Centre on Friday.

Birmingham-Southern
opened conference play at home this weekend with two wins, defeating Dallas, 2-1, Friday night, and Austin, 4-1, Sunday afternoon. Senior Garner Shivers scored both of BSC's goals against Dallas, as well as the game-winner against Austin. Seniors Tyler Evans and Nico Reitmeier as well as freshman Emil Saevarsson scored the other three goals, and Reitmeier also had an assist. The Panthers are on the road this weekend, traveling west to face Colorado College, Friday, and Hendrix, Sunday.

Centre opened up SCAC play this past weekend, taking on Trinity University and Southwestern University. On Friday night at home, Centre battled hard but gave up a goal with less than 5 minutes remaining in the first half, and two goals with less than 5 minutes remaining in the second half, dropping the contest 3-0 to the #5 Tigers. On Sunday, Centre bounced back for an impressive win, scoring three first-half goals and taking down the Pirates of Southwestern by a score of 4-0. Goals from Hall, Carlson, Van Nevel, and Garvey earned the win for the Colonels, who secured their sixth shutout of the year and fifth in six games. Centre travels to Texas this weekend to take on Austin College on Friday and the University of Dallas on Sunday. Friday night marks the fifth and final Susan G. Komen for the Cure game between Centre and Austin, in which the two teams help raise money on behalf of the breast cancer awareness organization. The two teams have raised over $25,000 over the past four years, and are set to play their final Komen Game in the last season of Centre’s involvement in the SCAC. Centre now sits at 6-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 in conference.

Matt Fechter scored twice in a span of 2:28 to send the game to overtime, but Rhodes recovered from blowing a two-goal lead in the final 10 minutes of regulation to stun Colorado College, 3-2, on a controversial goal on Friday. Despite dominating the game statistically, the Tigers could not capitalize on their numerous scoring chances. After falling behind 2-0 in the 79th minute, CC began playing with a sense of urgency and got on the board when Fechter scored two minutes later. CC's junior forward struck for the equalizer in the 83rd minute to record his third career multiple-goal game, but Colorado College could not get the go-ahead goal despite playing almost the entire final six minutes in the offensive zone. Just after a Tiger corner kick and ensuing shot that went over the crossbar, the Lynx scored the game winner 4:21 into the second overtime on a direct kick from 30 yards out while the referee was moving the Colorado College wall. The Tigers finished with a 21-10 advantage in total shots and built a 9-3 margin in corner kicks. Senior defender Chris Lutz made the most of a rare scoring opportunity, breaking a scoreless tie early in the second half with his first career goal to help CC record a 2-0 victory at Millsaps College on Sunday. Lutz collected the rebound of a shot by Alec Lee in the center of the box and calmly split a pair of defenders to record what proved to be the game winner in a must-win situation for the Tigers. CC added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute when Morgan Wack found the net for the first time off of a series of give-and-go touches in the penalty area from Daniel Wright and Lorenzo Pozzolini. First-year goalkeeper Forrest Marowitz made two saves en route to his first career victory and second shutout. The Tiger defense limited the Majors to just seven total shots and a pair of corner kicks. Colorado College returns home for league games against Birmingham-Southern College and Oglethorpe University next Friday and Sunday, respectively.

Dallas
(2-5-1 (0-2)) opened SCAC play on Friday evening with a tough 2-1 road loss to Birmingham-Southern College (Ala.). Down 2-0 after the first half, sophomore midfielder Michael O’Donnell netted his first goal of 2011 for the Crusaders on an assist from junior defender Joey Killion. Looking to rebound, Dallas then turned their attention to Oglethorpe University (Ga.) in a Sunday afternoon match held in Atlanta. The Crusaders, however, struggled to generate an offensive attack and fell to the Stormy Petrels, 4-0.

Senior forward Duncan Keegan scored all four goals as the Warriors opened SCAC 1-0-1 on the road. Keegan netted a hat trick, including the game-winner on a beautiful service from senior midfielder Collin Sitler with 2:45 remaining to propel Hendrix to a 3-2 win at Millsaps on Friday. Connor Silvestri and Dylan Reed had assists in the game. Senior keeper Adam Legg recorded four saves against the Majors. On Sunday, Keegan tied the game with 29 seconds left in regulation on a penalty kick, leading to a 1-1 double overtime time at Rhodes. Hendrix will return home for conference matches against Oglethorpe and Birmingham-Southern this weekend.

Millsaps
dropped two Southern Collegiate Athletic Contests against Hendrix and Colorado College this past weekend. On Friday, against Hendrix, Millsaps (2-5-1, 0-2 SCAC) came out of the gate hot as sophomore Trey Fontaine found junior Drew Moroux who found an open to lane. Moroux then found freshman Chase Ming who ripped a beautiful shot by Hendrix's Adam Legg to give the Majors a 1-0 lead. Fontaine scored later in the second half to extend the lead to 2-0. However, Hendrix mounted a comeback and scored three unanswered goals including the game winner with 2:45 remaining to take the game, 3-2. Against Colorado, an injury to Dylan Broussard in the second half called upon junior goalkeeper Stephen Andrieu. It took very little time for Andrieu to get action as Colorado attacked quickly. Andrieu made two incredible saves but couldn't stop the final rebound as Chris Lutz put it away to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Millsaps tried to respond, but could not find an equalizer throughout the second half. Colorado iced the game with a little over seven minutes remaining as Morgan Wack put a goal in the back of the net to ice the game. Next week, the Majors travel to Texas to take on Southwestern and Trinity.

Oglethorpe
started conference play in style this past weekend on Salamone Field, outscoring Austin and Dallas 7-1 en route to two victories. Against Austin on Friday, The Petrels netted three first half goals but played a man down for the final 25 minutes of the contest during which senior goalie Jon Beaver denied the Kangaroos on two separate penalty kick opportunities. Oglethorpe got the scoring started in the game's 14th minute when Jakub Madej played a through ball that Aleksander Tanjga blasted home from the right wing from 25 feet to give the Petrels the 1-0 advantage. Ben Robertson followed with a nifty strike of his own in the 30th minute when he raced down the right wing and juked two 'Roo defenders before darting to the middle and cracking a winner past Austin keeper Grant Gosselin. Oglethorpe ended the half with a flourish when Mark Lavery netted a goal on a singularly individual move, scoring from the left wing with less than two minutes remaining to make the score 3-0. The 'Roos came out fighting in the second half, however, and trimmed the lead to two on a strike in the 53rd minute. The match then took a dramatic turn at the 64:55 mark when 'Roo forward Chris Melton broke past the Petrel defense into the box and was subsequently taken down by Petrel keeper Frank Petersen for the disqualifying red card. Oglethorpe removed a midfielder from their lineup and began playing with 10 men, and senior Jon Beaver stepped onto the field to face to face the daunting task of a penalty kick. Beaver proved up to the challenge, stifling Melton's shot at the right post. Beaver's substitution goalie heroics were not done yet. Only 5 minutes later, the Petrels were whistled for another foul inside the box. This time the 'Roos Chris Stein took the kick, and, once again, Beaver denied the blast to the right. Stein was able to get his foot on the rebound but the shot missed and the Petrels escaped unscathed yet again. On Sunday against Dallas, the team continued their torrid start to the 2011 season by notching their second straight SCAC win and fifth overall by racing past the University of Dallas on Salamone Field on Sunday, 4-0. Junior Ben Robertson got the party started in the 33rd minute by connecting on a deft free kick just outside the box, curling his shot around a bevy of Crusader defenders. The Petrels held a 7-4 shot advantage in the first half and took their 1-0 lead into the break. In the second half Oglethorpe put on a goal scoring clinic in the span of 16 minutes to delight the Parents Weekend crowd on Salamone Field. Mark Lavery started the brilliant stretch by taking a beautiful through ball from Robertson and smashing it past Dallas keeper Blaise Dufrain in the 55 minute. After the Crusaders made one final push with a couple of shots that rattled the post, Oglethorpe put the game to bed decisively with two breakaway scores by Carlos Gaston on perfect passes just two minutes apart. The first came in the 70th minute when Robertson collected his second assist on a perfectly timed through ball down the middle that Gaston raced under and beat the keeper one-on-one. The game-capping fourth goal, Gaston's second in two minutes, came when Harrison McConnell played yet another ball through, this one down the right, that Gaston once again finished skillfully. The Petrels outshoot the Crusaders 21-7 in the romp and now move their record to 8-2 on the season. The team will now travel on successive SCAC weekends. First up: Hendrix College in Conway, Ark. this Friday at 8:00 p.m.

Rhodes had an outstanding opening SCAC weekend picking up a huge double overtime win against Colorado College and tied Hendrix in a tough 1-1 double overtime affair. The Lynx return to action this week against Trinity and Southwestern.

Despite playing with great effort and determination the Sewanee men's soccer team could not overcome two first half deficits this weekend. The Tigers opened SCAC play with close 2-1 lose to Southwestern Friday night, before losing to No. 5 and league-leading Trinity 1-0, Saturday. Overall, senior forward Matt Lightfoot added to his goal total with Sewanee's only score on the weekend. The Germantown, Tenn., native converted a beautiful pass from junior forward Devon Ball against the Pirates.

As SCAC conference play opened Southwestern University hit the road this week and split action at Sewanee and Centre to move to 4-5-1 on the year and 1-1 in the conference. Friday night the Pirates needed just 46 seconds to take control of the game against Sewanee. Evan Perkins, assisted by Tim Eamma, scored on the first shot of the game. Sewanee answered in the 23rd minute but Charlie Schreck scored his first goal of the season, a game winner, in the 33rd minute give Southwestern the 2-1 win. On Sunday it was Centre that scored early in the contest and continued to press scoring three goals in the first half. They added one more in the second half and fended off the Pirate attacks to shutout Southwestern 4-0. SU returns home this weekend to face Millsaps and Rhodes on Friday and Sunday.

#5 Trinity
swept its opening weekend in the SCAC, defeating both Centre and Sewanee on the road on Friday and Sunday. The Tigers won 3-0 against Centre, then edged Sewanee 1-0 to finish the week. On Friday, Brian Hines scored two goals in just 11 seconds against Centre, tying for the second-fastest consecutive goals by one player in Division III history. Josh Adams got the eventual game-winner in both victories – including a goal with just seven seconds to go before halftime at Sewanee on Sunday. Earlier in the week, the Tigers took a 4-0 first-half lead against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, but the game was cancelled due to lightning and rain in the area. Trinity returns home this weekend to continue SCAC action, hosting Rhodes and Millsaps. The Tigers defeated Rhodes 4-1 last season, and blanked Millsaps 9-0.
