SUWANEE, Ga. - Millsaps College earned its first ever varsity lacrosse program win when the Majors beat Huntingdon, 10-6 on Saturday. Millsaps is in its second season sponsoring men's lacrosse and the win put an end to the Majors' 16 game losing streak dating back to beginning of the 2011 season.
AROUND THE SCAC
Birmingham-Southern was off this week but
returns to action this weekend to open conference play. The
Panthers take on Southwestern on Friday and Dallas on Sunday, both
on the road.
Centre played once over the last week, suffering
its first loss of the year in a 21-7 loss to No. 11 Denison in a
neutral site game Sunday in Charlottesville, Va. Wes Hardman led
the Colonels with three goals while Connor Stubbs added two goals
and two assists. The game was the start of a 10-day spring break
road trip which continues this week with a game Tuesday at Piedmont
before the Colonels open SCAC play at Colorado College on Friday
and Hendrix on Sunday.
Colorado College opened its Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference schedule with a 17-2 victory over Dallas on Saturday at
Washburn Field. Freshman attackman Bennett Krishock paced the
balanced attack with three goals and three assists, while senior
attackman Hunter Sprole added a pair of scores. The Tigers struck
for four goals during the opening 2:36 and never looked back.
Fourteen players found the net for the Tigers, including senior
close defender Ian Coughlan who recorded his first career goal.
Junior goalie Zach Steedman stopped one shot for the Tigers, who
held a conference opponent to fewer than five goals for the 11th
time in 15 tries. Colorado College plays host to Western New
England University in a non-conference game on Wednesday afternoon
before entertaining Centre and Sewanee on Friday and Sunday,
respectively.
In its only game of the week, Dallas (0-4, 0-1
SCAC) fell 17-2 in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Saturday to Colorado
College. Stephen Joseph and Frank Sporleder each scored for Dallas
in the loss. The Crusaders will play three home games this week --
Concordia University (Wis.), Oglethorpe University, and
Birmingham-Southern College.
Hendrix suffered a 20-7 defeat at Kenyon College on
Saturday. Sophomore midfielder Cameron Millstone led the Warriors
with five points on three goals and two assists and recorded six
ground balls. Senior Alex Wilkinson scored three goals and senior
Zach Doelger had a goal an assist. Senior keeper Keith Clemens had
six ground balls and 18 saves. Junior defenseman and team captain
Robert McCarthy recorded five ground balls and moved into first
place in program history with 144 ground balls for his career.
McCarthy passed the old mark of 143 held by Daniel Abernathy, who
played for the Warriors from 2008-11. The Warriors will open SCAC
play by hosting Sewanee on Friday and Centre on Sunday.
It was a monumental weekend for Millsaps as the
Majors picked up their first win in program history. After falling
to Shorter in the middle of the week, Millsaps responded by
traveling to Huntingdon and picking up their first win of the
season, 10-6 over the Hawks. Freshman Scott Budd was outstanding on
this day, but sophomore Brandon Allison also had a terrific day as
he picked up three goals on the afternoon. Freshman Stuart Madden
and sophomore Kirk Clark each picked up five ground balls while
Budd and sophomores Julien Speyer and Taylor Page each had four.
Clark and Page also caused two turnovers. Sophomore Chris Hood was
fantastic in goal as he picked up 13 saves on 19 shots on goal.
Millsaps improves to 1-4 on the season. They also set a school
record for most goals scored in a game with 10. They return to
action next Saturday as they welcome Rhodes to Harper Davis Field
at 1 p.m.
Piedmont topped Oglethorpe 22-6 in Demorest, Ga.
last Wednesday evening in the Petrels only game of the week. The
Lions tallied their first strike just 33 seconds into the contest
and never looked back en route to building a comfortable 11-2
halftime advantage. Freshman Coleman Plaisted put the Petrels on
the board with a goal halfway through the first quarter but
Piedmont would respond with the next two to give them a 5-1 lead
after the first fifteen minutes. The Lions cushion swelled to 8-1
before Plaisted found junior Michael Kasmarik for a goal. Again,
however, Piedmont ended the quarter with three consecutive strikes
to open up the game. Nick Pizzo notched his first career goal as a
collegiate in the third quarter and Arness Holsey added three
unassisted strikes as the game wound down to finish out the
Oglethorpe scoring on the day. The Petrels are now 0-4 on the
season and will travel to face Dallas in Texas on March 23.
Rhodes will take a nearly three week break
before its next game on Saturday, March 24. The Lynx will travel to
Jackson, Miss. to play Millsaps in the program’s first-ever
SCAC league game. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
Sewanee closed out its five-game homestand with wins over
Otterbein (10-9) and Berry College (Ga.) 6-4. With those victories
the Tigers stand with at 5-2 on the season. This week, Sewanee will
put its winning streak on-the-line SCAC road games at Hendrix and
Colorado College. Individually, attacker Michael Morris and
goalkeeper Tommy Healy continue to lead the way. Morris added five
goals and an assist last week, while Healy posted 20 saves, won his
fourth and fifth games, while stopping 61 percentage of the
Tigers’ opponents shots.
Southwestern continues their home stand and are
looking for their first win of the season. They had a light week
this spring break, hosting Drew University on Monday evening. The
Pirates finally got some good weather to compete it, but the
unbeaten Rangers were just too strong as Drew controlled every
aspect of the game. Jamie Long led offensively with three goals
while Michael Villa posted a team high two assists. Chris O'Quain
garnered the loss, but recorded a game high six saves. Southwestern
falls to 0-6 on the year and remain at home to face Concordia
(Wis.) on Monday night before heading into SCAC action by hosting
Birmingham Southern on Friday afternoon and Oglethorpe on
Sunday.
