SUWANEE, Ga. - The third week of the season saw conference play began as Trinity opened up the SCAC schedule with a 62-7 win at Rhodes. Sewanee traveled to Washington state and came away victorious while Centre came out on top in a wild 42-35 shootout over Washington & Lee.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College built a 13-7 lead, but 28 unanswered points from Southwestern Assemblies of God to close out the game resulted in a 35-13 loss to send the 'Roos to 0-3 on the year. Brogan Funderburg scored twice in the first half on runs of three and one yards and finished the game with 66 yards on 16 carries. Turnovers proved costly in the second half, as SAGU returned two fumbles for touchdowns during their 28-0 run to end the game. Travis Zambiasi completed 17-of-30 passes for 173 yards and Jordan Schell caught five passes for 47 yards to lead the 'Roos offensively, while Tanner Martin made 11 tackles and Sean Sweeney added 10. De'Andre Holmes added nine stops, including 1.5 for loss, and James Roh forced two fumbles. Austin College will be looking for its first win this weekend when they travel to Danville, Kentucky to take on SCAC foe Centre College on Saturday.
Birmingham-Southern moved to 3-0 with a 43-7
victory over Ave Maria University in Naples, Fla. Junior tailback
Shawn Morris recorded two of the Panthers' touchdowns on the day.
Sophomore wide receiver Tyler Johnson (Milton, Fla.) also had a
touchdown, as did junior safety Andrew Shannon (Trussville, Ala.),
who returned an interception to the end zone. The score was 34-7 at
the half, with BSC adding nine points in the second half, including
a safety in the fourth quarter. BSC stays on the road again this
weekend, traveling to face Sewanee at 1 p.m. on
Saturday.
Centre rallied from 14 points down in the first half to win 42-34 over Washington & Lee in the home-opener for the Colonels to improve to 2-0 this year. The win marked the ninth time in the last 11 years Centre has won its first home contest of the season. The Colonels rushed for 282 yards, marking the highest single-game rushing total by a Centre team since the 2004 season when the Colonels also rushed for 282 yards in a win over Kenyon. Senior Jonathan Pinque and junior Monte Scotton rushed for 100+ yards each with Scotton also scoring four touchdowns to tie a school single-game record. Centre will open SCAC play this week against Austin at Farris Stadium in Danville, Ky.

Millsaps could not get anything to go their way as they fell to Louisiana College 56-0. It was the first time the Majors have been shutout since a 2006 playoff game against Carnegie Mellon. Junior Garrett Pinciotti struggled as he had little time in the pocket throughout the day, going 12-for-37 with 129 yards passing and two interceptions. Sophomore Thomas Theriot led all rushers with 37 yards while junior Dustin Fawcett brought in four catches for 33 yards. The Major offense as a whole turned the ball over five time and only racked up 190 yards of total offense in Saturday's contest. Defensively, freshman Zach Bell led all tackles with seven while Nolan added six tackles including an interception. Junior Marvis O'Sirio picked up six tackles and two tackles for loss.
Trinity University used a potent running attack to beat Rhodes 62-7 in the SCAC opener for both teams, at Fargason Field on September 17th. The Tigers jumped out to an early 17-0 first quarter lead and never looked back. Trinity accounted for 345 yards rushing on the day as they improved to 3-0 on the season. Rhodes senior quarterback Brett Stoots led the Lynx on a fourth quarter scoring drive and completed 7 of 8 passes in the 4th quarter. Junior wide receiver Jack Lartigue scored the lone Lynx touchdown on a 20 yard pass from Stoots with 6:25 to play in the game. Turnovers plagued Rhodes as Lynx quarterbacks threw three interceptions and Rhodes lost one fumble. The four turnovers led to 28 Trinity points. Rhodes falls to 0-2 on the season and will host DePauw University next Saturday at 1 p.m.
For the first time since 2008 Sewanee sits with a 2-1 record after its first three games. After Saturday’s 34-23 win at Puget Sound the Tigers will now return home for the next two weeks as they open SCAC play against Birmingham-Southern. In the victory over the Loggers, Sewanee overpowered PSU with 402 yards of total offense. After falling behind 10-0 the Tigers answered with 34 straight points in the next two quarters. Individually, sophomore quarterback Curtis Johnson led the Sewanee attack with 158 yards and two touchdowns, while five Tiger backs rushed for over a 5.0 yards per carry average. Defensively, Dave McKeithen made a team-high 10 tackles, while the Tigers defense forced a fumble and two interceptions. This week Sewanee will look to get off to its best start since the 2001 season. Head coach Tommy Laurendine will have a tall task as the Tigers all 0-4 all-time against Birmingham-Southern. The Panthers completely dominated last season’s meeting 50-10 at Panther Stadium.
No. 24 Trinity opened SCAC play with a 62-7 win at Rhodes on Saturday, reaching 60 points for the first time since the 2002 season. In fact, Trinity had not produced a 50-point game since 2004. The Tigers posted 524 yards of offense for the first time since the 2009 season, and rushed for over 300 yards for the first time since a 2005 win over Centre. The 62 points scored are tied for the ninth-most in Trinity history, while the 55-point margin of victory is also the ninth-largest in school history. Desmond King rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns on just seven carries in the game, averaging better than 14 yards/attempt. Starting running back Patrick Granchelli finished with 94 yards rushing, while backup quarterback Mason Blaschke had 78 yards rushing and two touchdowns on just four attempts. Blaschke and starting QB Nykolas McKissic accounted for three touchdowns each. Blaschke threw one in addition to his two rushing, while McKissic went 10-17 for 135 yards and three TD’s. Kicker Garrett Biel hit two field goals and eight PAT’s to score 14 total points in the game. The eight extra points tied a Trinity record for a single game. Todd Canion had eight extra points twice in 2002 – once against Rhodes, and once against Pomona-Pitzer. Trinity will continue SCAC play this weekend, squaring off against conference rival Millsaps. The Majors lead the series with Trinity with a 19-15 overall record, having won four of the past five meetings. The lone Tiger win came in 2007’s game in Jackson, Mississippi – the game with the ESPY-nominated Mississippi Miracle play in which Trinity won on a 15-lateral play as time expired.
