Women's Lacrosse Recap (Week 7) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - In the lone SCAC contest this past week Birmingham-Southern knocked off Millsaps in a thirlling contest  12-11. After Millsaps took a 3-0 early lead, BSC scored nine of the next 12 goals en route to its first conference win of the year. The Panthers were led by Stephanie Gore and Madeline Golden who each scored three goals on the afternoon.

- AROUND THE SCAC -

Birmingham-Southern played one game this week and defeated Millsaps in a thriller on the road, 12-11. Junior Stephanie Gore and sophomore Madeline Golden led with three goals apiece, and Gore also led with six ground balls, four caused turnovers, and four draw controls. Senior goalkeeper Katie Bates made eight saves. BSC plays only one game again this week, stepping out of conference play to face Berry on Tuesday in Rome, Ga. 
  
Centre split a pair of games this past weekend in Ohio, falling to Wooster 17-7 before bouncing back on Sunday to defeat Kenyon 9-3. Freshman Audrey Powers led the Colonels in the win with three goals. Centre will return to action this weekend hosting a pair of conference contests against Sewanee and Dallas.     

Junior attacker Ellie Cole set a career high with seven points and senior attacker Leslie Jacoby struck for three goals as Colorado College remained undefeated on the road with a 12-5 victory at Adams State College on Saturday. Cole put the Tigers on the board with an unassisted tally 5:29 into the contest, but the Grizzlies tied the score 1:22 later. ASC, however, would have to wait more than 31 minutes before scoring again. During that time, Cole and Jacoby combined for five goals to fuel a 7-0 run that gave CC an 8-1 lead early in the second half. Jacoby put the Tigers ahead to stay when she scored for the first time 9:07 into the contest. Cole’s tally 1:31 into the second half proved to be her second game winner of the season and the fourth of her career. She scored four goals on six shots and tied her single-game high with three assists. Senior midfielder Maloney, who leads Colorado College in scoring, finished with a goal and four assists. She also recorded a game-high five draw controls, a pair of caused turnovers and grabbed two ground balls to finish the game with 101 for her career. Junior goaltender Abby Fink finished with four saves for CC, which recorded a 33-22 advantage in total shots. The Tigers were credited with a season-high 16 caused turnovers and held an opponent to five goals or less for the sixth time in 11 games. CC improved to 3-0 on the road where it has outscored its opponents by a combined margin of 42-7. Colorado College plays back-to-back non-conference games next Saturday and Sunday in Durango, Colo., against Colorado Mesa University and Fort Lewis College, respectively.

Dallas (2-7, 0-3 SCAC) took the week off from action last week. The Crusaders will return to action Saturday on the road against Otterbein. 

Millsaps was back in action on Saturday afternoon as they welcomed in the Birmingham Southern Panthers for Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Harper Davis Field. In a great, back-and-forth contest, the Panthers were able to escape Jackson with a win as they held on to take a 12-11 win over the Majors. The Majors jumped all over the Panthers early on as they scored the first three goals of the game in less than two minutes at the 20:50 mark. Freshman Kendall Fann got things rolling with two straight goals to go up 2-0. Sophomore Jamie Blair Page followed that up shortly with a goal to put Millsaps on top 3-0. Birmingham Southern scored the next four goals to go up 4-3 before the Majors evened it back up as Page picked up her second goal of the contest off an assist from senior Laura Gray. BSC then scored three unanswered to go up 7-4 before Gray picked up her own goal to bring the Majors within one at half. The Panthers opened the second half with two straight goals to increase their lead to 9-5, but Millsaps scored five of the next six goals in the next 15 minutes to tie the game at 10 with 7:04 remaining as sophomore Haleigh Williams found the back of the net three times while Page added two. Birmingham Southern picked up two goals and held off a late Millsaps surge to take the win, 12-11. Williams and Page were great offensively as they each picked up four goals while Fann added two and Gray picked up one. Sophomore Dani Rossano and Fann each added four groundballs while five different Majors caused turnovers. Freshman Nicholette Hannah was great in goal as she picked up 17 saves despite taking the loss for the Majors. Millsaps falls to 3-9 overall and 1-3 in the SCAC with one game left to play. They will take the next weekend off before heading to the mountains in Sewanee, Tenn. for their finale against the Sewanee Tigers. The game is set to being at 12 p.m. EST.

Sewanee (7-4, 1-1 SCAC) took the week off from action last week. The Purple Tigers will return to action Saturday on the road against SCAC foe Centre.
