MILLINGTON, Tenn. - The No. 7 Birmingham-Southern Panthers lost its first-ever Division III post-season game today, falling to the Webster University Gorloks 6-1, at the NCAA Central Regional at USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn. Box Score | Central Regional
BSC falls to 37-8, while Webster moves to 34-12. The Panthers, the top seed in the regional, will play again this evening at 7 p.m. Central, taking on the winner of the game between Illinois Wesleyan and DePauw.
The
fifth-seeded Gorloks were strong on both offense and defense today,
racking up 13 hits and five RBI. Pitcher Steven Dooley also threw
the complete game while giving up only five hits and one earned run
with five strikeouts.
Webster scored
once run in both the top of the first and third innings, then three
in the top of the fourth to go up 5-0. Their final run came in the
top of the eighth before BSC finally got on the board in the bottom
of the ninth on an RBI double by senior Jon Walker.
Junior Brandon
Perry was 2-3 and junior Stephen Denton was 2-4 at the plate.
Freshman Paul Caudill took the loss on the mound, starting and
throwing 3.2 innings and allowing six hits and four earned runs
with one strikeout. He falls to 1-1 on the year. Sophomore Ralls
Pennington, freshman Ryan Hawks, sophomore Ethan Wilkinson, and
freshman David Bourbonnais all saw action on the mound as
well.
