Women's Soccer Recap (Week 7) - Around the SCAC

Women's Soccer Recap (Week 7) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Only two regular season weekends remain on the conference schedule and every team is still alive to make the SCAC Soccer Tournament hosted by Birmingham-Southern the first weekend of November. Only six points separate second place and a group of four teams tied for fifth place in the league setting up for an exciting finish to the regular season.

- AROUND THE SCAC -

Austin College dropped their lone match of the week, a 3-2 decision at Hendrix College on Sunday. The 'Roos are now 6-6 overall this season with the loss. The 'Roos fell behind 1-0 at the 8:40 mark, but scored just 12 seconds later when Ali Ryan found Tyler Marquez for the score to square things up. Hendrix would use an own goal in the 17th minute to take a 2-1 halftime lead. Natalie Nelms evened the game at 2-2 on an assist from Kelsey D'Amore at the 65:10 mark, but Hendrix would get the game winner less than five minutes later to hand the 'Roos the 3-2 defeat. This week the 'Roos take on Hardin-Simmons on Tuesday before taking on the University of Dallas on Saturday.

Birmingham-Southern
picked up two big conference wins on the road this week, shutting out Millsaps on Friday, 2-0, for their fourth shutout of the season, and defeating Rhodes on Sunday, 4-1. Against Millsaps, senior Linda Amaya scored both of BSC's goals; against Rhodes, sophomore Bailey Kimbell recorded a hat trick and also assisted the fourth goal. BSC plays only one game this week, traveling to Atlanta to face Oglethorpe on Saturday at 1 p.m. Eastern.

Friday night, Centre tied Sewanee 1-1 in double overtime. This evening, Centre will take on Maryville College (TN) in a home contest. Centre continues conference play Friday and Sunday against Rhodes and Millsaps, respectively. Friday, against Rhodes, kick-off is slated for 6:00 pm EST. Sunday, Centre will take-on Rhodes at noon.

Dallas
(10-5, 2-3) went 0-1 on the week, falling 3-1 on the road to Hendrix College (Ark.). The Lady Crusaders will look to rebound this week against Dallas Christian College (Friday), Austin College (Saturday) and then on the road versus the University of Houston-Victoria (Sunday).

Hendrix
extended their winning streak to four games and into a second place tie in the SCAC standings by topping Dallas and Austin at home this weekend. On Friday against the Lady Crusaders, junior midfielder Morgan Scott scored twice and senior midfielder Hannah McGrew recorded two assists to lead Hendrix to a 3-1 win. The Warriors scored just 4:29 into the game when McGrew passed to junior forward Mel Roach on a fast break. The goal was the fifth of the season for Roach. Scott scored in the 28th minute on touches from McGrew and junior midfielder Ana Contreras to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead. Scott added an unassisted goal, her fifth of the year in the 53rd minute to go up 3-0. Senior keeper Allison Mosley recorded three saves in 63 scoreless minutes and junior Megan Childress also had three saves. In a 3-2 win on Sunday against the Kangaroos, senior Gunnar Gunnarsdottir passed it to McGrew, who blasted it into the goal from the top of the box just 8:40 into the game. Austin responded 12 seconds later with a goal. The Warriors went up 2-1 in the 17th minute with an own goal that was knocked in by an Austin defender. After the 'Roos tied the game in the 66th minute, junior Rebecca Rahn blasted the game-winner from 25 yards out after a pass from Ghidina to win the game in the 71st minute. Hendrix will play their final regular season games in Texas when they take on Southwestern on Friday and #3 Trinity on Sunday.

Millsaps returned home Friday as they faced conference foe Birmingham-Southern. The Panthers used a early goal in the first and second halves to cruise to a 2-0 win at Harper Davis Field. Senior Molly Beth Jourdan had a tremendous game in goal as she picked up 12 saves. Millsaps' struggles came offensively as they were outshot 21-5 including 12-3 in the first half. They then fell to the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrel on Sunday afternoon thanks to an early free kick from the Petrel's Jordan Weaver. Millsaps outshot Oglethorpe 12-7, but could not find the equalizer. The Majors are back in action this weekend as they travel to Sewanee, Tennessee to take on the Sewanee Tigers. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. on Friday and then back on Sunday against Centre.

Oglethorpe
went 1-2 this past week, falling to LaGrange (L, 4-1) and Rhodes (L, 11-1) and besting Millsaps (W, 1-0). Against LaGrange on Wednesday, The teams tested one another out for most of the first half, alternating chances at the target before the Panthers broke through with a tally in the 33rd minute to claim the lead. The Petrels tried to counter furiously, cracking 11 shots to LaGrange's 5 in the first half, but Oglethorpe could not break through. The score remained the same deep into the second half before a frenzied finish to the match. The Panthers seemingly took control of the game with a strike in the 75th minute to take a 2-0 lead. With two starters out due to injury and only two bench players available, there seemed to be little hope for the Petrels. Then, in the 85th minute, Eliza Newland found Kristen Koch onside in the far corner and Koch finished the play beautifully with a powerful, angling shot from 25 yards out. With new life, the Petrels stepped forward, won the faceoff and challenged the Panthers down the right side of the pitch. LaGrange, however, intercepted a pass and counter-attacked decisively to connect for a dagger of a goal on a through ball from midfield that was finished skillfully. The Panthers would add yet another goal in the 88th minute on a long cross that was stabbed into the net from the back of the box to provide the final 4-1 margin. The injury-depleted Petrels were crushed by Rhodes on Friday 11-1 before rallying on Sunday to top Millsaps. Junior Jordan Weaver scored in the 22nd minute against the Majors and a determined Petrel squad made the narrow lead hold up. Oglethorpe is now 2-8-1 on the season and will host Birmingham-Southern this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Rhodes
split a pair of home SCAC contests this weekend defeating Oglethorpe 11-1 on Friday before falling to Birmingham-Southern on Sunday 4-1. The Lynx will be back in action Friday on the road at Centre.

In its only contest before fall break Sewanee battled SCAC foe Centre to a 1-1draw Friday night. The Tigers lone goal came from senior Faith Spencer. On the play senior midfielder Kabler Colhoun passed the ball just outside the top of the box, where Spencer drove her shot past the jumping Colonel keeper from 18-yards out. The Tigers will take the rest of the week off, before returning to play against Millsaps Friday night.

Southwestern
fell 7-0 to Trinity on Friday night in their only action this week to drop to 5-6-1 on the year and 1-4 in the SCAC. SU keeper Sarah Nonaka was busy in goal and recorded a season high 15 saves, but the Tigers' attack was just too fierce for the Pirate defense as Trinity scored steadily throughout the game. Southwestern will look to regroup with a non-conference game against Texas Lutheran University on Monday and return home to continue conference play against Hendrix on Friday night for senior night.

#3 Trinity
scored blanked Southwestern University 7-0 in the team's only action this week, remaining unbeaten at 14-0-0 on the year. The Tigers had two different players score hat tricks in the game. Both Abby Loar and Stephanie Segovia finished with three goals, with Loar getting her hat trick early in the second half. Segovia finished off the scoring late in the game with her third goal. It marks the second straight time that Trinity has had two different players score three goals in a game, as Segovia and Annie Kendzior did it against Millsaps last Sunday. Prior to these last two games, it had been 17 years since Trinity had two players with hat tricks in one game (1994 against Hendrix). Segovia has now scored a hat trick three times this season, which is also a school record. Last week, she became the fourth Tiger player to record two hat tricks in the same season, but now she stands alone as the only player to do it three times. Loar's three goals also pushed her to 50 in her career, becoming just the third player in Trinity history to score 50 or more goals. She needs just two more to tie the school record, set by Becky King (1997-00). Loar also needs just two points to break Trinity's all-time record in that category. She is currently tied with King for second all-time. Trinity will play just once this week, facing off against Hendrix College in a Sunday afternoon SCAC matchup. The Tigers defeated Hendrix 5-0 last year in Conway, Arkansas.
