SUWANEE, Ga. – The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), in conjunction with Birmingham-Southern College and the BSC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, raised $1,900 at its annual men's and women's basketball tournament through the sale of autographed basketballs from the various teams competing at the event. Special Olympics was selected as the beneficiary of this year's effort.
"We had a very successful weekend at Birmingham-Southern and I would like to thank all the families and fans who made generous contributions to this charitable effort," said SCAC commissioner Dwayne Hanberry. "All of NCAA Division III has partnered with Special Olympics this year, and the SCAC is proud to make this donation as part of that partnership."
A check was presented to Wendy Bigham, senior public relations manager of Special Olympics Georgia, and Maria Johnson, a Special Olympics athlete, at the conference office on Wednesday morning by SCAC Director of Communications, Russell Kramer and SCAC Director of Sports Information, Jeff DeBaldo.
In 10 years of tournament competition, the SCAC has teamed with its tournament host school to benefit a local or national charity. Since the first event in 2003, over $20,000 and hundreds of pounds of canned goods have been donated to various charities from the generous donations made by patrons of the SCAC basketball tournament.
Wilson Sports, which supplies the official basketball of the annual tournament, donated the 24 collectible basketballs emblazoned with the 2012 SCAC Tournament logo.
