SUWANEE, Ga. - The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference's (SCAC) third season of men's lacrosse kicked off over the past two weeks as the league adds two more lacrosse schools to the mix. The University of Dallas and Rhodes College either join the league or are sponsoring varsity lacrosse for the first time in 2012.
AROUND THE SCAC
Birmingham-Southern opened the season with a 3-1 record. The Panthers opened the season with a 21-4 loss to 11th-ranked Lynchburg before rattling off three straight wins against Berry, Huntingdon and Guilford. Birmingham-Southern returns to action March 7 hosting Piedmont at 7 p.m.
Centre was dominant in its season opener
against Alma College, rolling to a 22-2 victory Sunday at Farris
Stadium. The Colonels scored the first 12 goals of the game, and
the 22 total goals set a new school record. Peter Murphy led the
colonels with four goals while Zack Connors, Patrick Evans and
Scott Hughes each had three. Connor Stubbs topped the Colonels with
five assists while Connors added three. Centre returns to action
with a trip to Hanover on Saturday.
Colorado College opens the 2012 regular season on March 7
when the Tigers host Alfred before traveling to Dallas to take on
Hampden-Sydney at Southern Methodist University on March 11. The
Tigers are coming off a 2011 season in which they went 15-1 and 7-0
in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and won their second
straight SCAC championship in the inaugural SCAC tournament. With
the SCAC championship, Colorado College earned the league’s
first-ever bid to the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse
Championship.
Dallas is now 0-2 on the season. Dallas played Goucher at
Austin Westlake H.S. in a neutral site game on Feb. 19, dropping
the decision, 30-2. The Crusaders hosted Fontbonne and fell 19-2.
Dallas returns to action on Thursday, March 8 when they host the
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
Hendrix opened the season, with a pair of 7-1 home losses
to Carthage and Mount Ida over the weekend. On Friday vs. the Red
Men, sophomore midfielder Cameron Millstone scored a goal on a pass
from freshman Charles Hotchkiss. Millstone took five shots and had
a team-best six ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Keith Clemens
recorded 18 saves. Against the Mustangs on Sunday, Millstone added
an unassisted goal late in the game. The St. Louis, Mo. native was
also 7-for-9 on face-offs with four ground balls. Clemens stopped
20 shots and had a team-high seven ground balls. Junior defenseman
Robert McCarthy had five ground balls and four caused turnovers.
The Warriors will host Augustana (Ill.) on Friday and Fontbonne on
Sunday.
Millsaps opened things up this week as they dropped games
to Augustana and Berry. Against Augustana, The Majors hung tough
with the Vikings and stayed within striking distance in the first
half, but the Vikings pulled away in the second half to take the
win. Ryan McKay, Hunter Stevison, and Brandon Allison all puts
goals in the net for Millsaps as McKay added two assists. Against
Berry, the Majors gained some momentum going into halftime on
Saturday afternoon at Harper Davis Field as they picked up two
straight goals as they looked at a five-point deficit going into
half. However, Berry College pulled away in the second half and
defeated Millsaps. The Majors have some time off and will be back
in action on March 10th as they hit the road to Demorest, Ga. to
take on the Piedmont Lions. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
Oglethorpe lost its only contest of the week to Reinhardt
College by the score of 15-5. Being played on the campus of North
Forsyth High School, the Petrels jumped out to an early 3-1 lead
before the Golden Eagles tallied 12 of the next 13 goals over the
next three quarters to put the game away. Sophomore Arness Holsey
led the Petrel attack by netting three goals on the afternoon while
junior Michael Kasmarik collected two assists. Oglethorpe is now
0-2 on the young season and will face Susquehanna on Salamone Field
on March 6.
Rhodes its season opener to Piedmont, 19-10, on
Saturday in the Lynx’s first game as a varsity program.
Rhodes was led by William Posey who scored three of the
Lynx’s nine goals on just four shots. Rhodes returns to
action on Wednesday hosting Augustana (Ill.) before traveling to
Huntingdon on Sunday.
Sewanee evened its 2012 record to 1-1, after the Tigers
dropped their only contest of the week against Wittenberg, 9-8.
After both teams headed into the locker room tied 3-3, Sewanee came
out hot to start the second half. After each team scored once, the
Tigers went up 5-4 when Jack Thomasson scored the first of his two
goals in the third. Moments later, Pierce Leonard added to the
Tiger total with an impressive shot. Sewanee then went up 8-4 when
Michael Morris fired home a one-timer from Leonard. Unfortunately,
Sewanee led by only two at the end of the quarter when Wittenberg
added two late goals. In the final quarter, Wittenberg added three
more scores, including the game-winner from Andrew Morrison with
1:45 left. After one away game, and a natural site contest in
Nashville, Sewanee makes its 2012 home debut with a 7:00 p.m.
contest against Ferrum College, Wednesday, and a 1:00 p.m. match
against Kenyon College, Sunday.
On a rain soaked afternoon Southwestern kicked off
the 2012 season at home, facing Goucher College on Saturday
afternoon. It was less than ideal conditions after a huge rain
storm came through, soaking the playing surface. Goucher managed to
come out strong, scoring four first quarter goals and 10 in the
second quarter. After halftime the Pirates regrouped and gathered
their footing to score seven second half goals, but the Gophers
were too much as they added in 13 more in the second half en route
to the 27-7 final. The Pirates had a strong showing in their second
contest, but early goals once again cost them the victory.
Fontbonne scored four goals in the first quarter to take an early
lead, one that Southwestern could not recover from as they fell 8-4
on Sunday. SU remains at home to face Whittier College on March 2
at 7pm, their first home game under the lights.
