Men's Soccer Recap (Week 2) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Over the weekend, Oglethorpe took claim to the Sonny Carter Invitational hosted by Emory University by going 2-0 against Rowan and Methodist and notching nine goals in the process. Meanwhile, in other action involving SCAC teams, the Panthers of Birmingham-Southern won the Kyle Rote, Jr., Invitational - hosted by Sewanee - for the third straight year with 1-0 wins against Greensboro College and Huntingdon.

- AROUND THE SCAC -

Austin College went 1-1-1 on the week with a loss to Howard Payne, a tie against Mary Hardin-Baylor and a come from behind victory over Concordia-Texas, bringing their record to 3-1-1 on the year. That is the program's best start since opening the year at 4-1-1 in the 2004 season. Chris Melton had a huge week for the 'Roos, scoring five goals to bring his season total to seven tallies already on the year. Melton scored the lone Austin College goal in a 2-1 loss against HPU before tallying a pair of second half goals to help the 'Roos earn a 2-2 draw against UMHB, and finished out the weekend with two more second half goals, including an 81st minute game-winner in a 3-2 victory against Concordia. Stephen Crisco and Chris Stein each had two assists to lead Austin College on the week. This week the 'Roos get into conference play starting with a road match against Millsaps on Friday.

Birmingham-Southern won the Kyle Rote, Jr., Invitational, hosted by Sewanee, for the third straight year with 1-0 wins against Greensboro College and Huntingdon this weekend. Senior forward Tyler Evans was named Offensive MVP after scoring the game-winner against Greensboro, and assisting the game-winner against Huntingdon. Sophomore goalkeeper Sveinbo Grimsson was named Defensive MVP after recording six saves against Greensboro and one against Huntingdon. The Panthers travel to St. Louis, Mo., next weekend to take on Washington University and Westminster College.

Centre hosted the 22nd Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic at home this weekend, with Hanover College, Baldwin-Wallace College, and Spalding University all coming to Danville, KY for the tournament. After Baldwin-Wallace took down Spalding in the opening match of the classic, Centre and Hanover played an entertaining, open game which saw a total of 12 goals, Centre prevailing 8-4. Two-time All-Conference performer Austin Hall opened his 2011 scoring campaign with four goals, including a hat-trick in the first half alone. On Saturday, Hanover beat Spalding in the afternoon match-up before Centre and Baldwin-Wallace squared off for the tournament championship. Centre took an early lead behind a Robbe Tarver goal before Baldwin-Wallace equalized, sending the game into OT. After Centre came close to winning the game in the first overtime, it was Baldwin-Wallace who would score the sudden-death game-winner in the second overtime, winning the game 2-1 2OT and taking home the title of the 22nd Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic. Centre (2-2-0) travels away to Wabash College and Earlham College this weekend, playing on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

Colorado
College split a pair of games in Northfield, Minn., on its first road trip of the season. Daniel Wright gave the Tigers an early lead, but St. Olaf College came from behind to post a 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon. The junior forward struck for an unassisted tally in the eighth minute to give CC an early lead, but that turned out to be the only ball that would get passed the Olies' goalkeeper. Junior goalkeeper Forrest Marowitz stopped three shots for the Tigers. Junior goalkeeper Brian Graf recorded his first career shutout and junior forward Matt Fechter struck for his sixth game-winning goal as Colorado College bounced back from its first loss of the season to defeat Carleton College, 2-0, on Sunday. Fechter scored the only goal CC would need in the 49th minute on the first shot of the second half. He took a touch pass from Wright on a direct kick and sent a laser over a five-player wall into the upper right corner from 25 yards out. The Tigers got an insurance tally in the 77th minute when Ben Glass settled a throw-in near the top of the box on the left side, turned and knocked a shot from 17 yards off the goalkeeper's hands inside the near post. It was the first career goal for CC's sophomore midfielder. Graf tied his season high with six saves, including four in the second half when the Knights launched 12 of their 18 total shots. He made a diving save on a low bullet by Tim Willis in the 84th minute to preserve the shutout. Graf improved his record to 2-0-0, lowered his goals-against average to 1.58 and raised his saves percentage to .789. Colorado College returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 17, when it plays host to Wittenberg University in the first game of the 2011 Bill Boddington Memorial Tournament.

Dallas
played just one game last week after its match against East Texas Baptist was cancelled due to a smoke advisory alert. In there only match the Crusaders fell 4-3 against Howard Payne. Dallas looks to bounce back Tuesday night as the Crusaders host Southwestern Assemblies of God.

The Warriors provided some dramatic moments over the week by going 2-0-1 and all three games reaching overtime. Junior forward Connor Silvestri scored with 28 seconds remaining in the first overtime to give Hendrix a 4-3 victory at Ozarks on Wednesday. Seniors Duncan Keegan, Ian Evans and Taylor Davenport also scored in that game and freshman Greg Gandy recorded three assists. Scoreless until the final 10 minutes of regulation, the Warriors pulled out a 2-1 overtime win at Louisiana College on Saturday. Silvestri scored on a penalty kick late in regulation and Keegan hit the game-winner on a pass from junior Grant Womack with 2:02 left in the extra frame. Senior keeper Adam Legg recorded seven saves in the game. On Sunday, Silvestri scored with 13 seconds left in regulation to force what would become a 2-2 double overtime tie with Westminster at home. Keegan hit the first goal of the game with assists from Silvestri and Gandy. The Warriors have just one game this week, hosting Lyon on Wednesday night.

Millsaps
knocked off the East Texas Baptist Tigers 2-1 Friday evening in front of a wild home crowd. The Majors got an early goal from junior defender Taylor Harrison to go up 1-0 in the first two minutes of the first half. After the Tigers responded to tie the game at one, Harrison found a streaking Duncan Stankevich down the sideline who sent a beautiful cross into junior Hunter Creech who gave the Majors the 2-1 lead at half which led to their first victory of the season.

Oglethorpe
won the 2011 Sonny Carter Invitational hosted by Emory University this past weekend by going 2-0 against Rowan and Methodist and notching 9 goals in the process. On Saturday the Petrels blanked Rowan 4-0 with four different players scoring the goals and four different players assisting on each. On Sunday Oglethorpe raced past Methodist 5-2 to earn the Sonny Carter hardware. Jakub Madej scored twice, Nick Williamson dished two assists and headed home another and Mark Lavery and Ben Robertson each added goals in the rout. Madej recorded 6 points on the weekend, Willaimson 5 and Lavery 3 in the dominating performances. The Petrels are now 3-1 on the season and will face Emory this Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. on the Eagles Decatur campus.

Rhodes
was shutout 3-0 in there lone match of the week against Washington University. The Lynx are returning to action Tuesday evening as they face cross town rivals Christian Brothers.

Sewanee
continued their strong start after going 1-1 at the Kyle Rote Jr. Invitational. Head coach David Poggi's squad posted an impressive 2-1 comeback win against Huntingdon College Friday, before rallying to tie Greensboro – after a two goal deficit at the half – 2-2, Sunday. The Tigers now sit at 2-1-1 on the season, with five of their next six matches at home.

Southwestern
improved to 2-2-1 after splitting a pair of non-conference matches against the University of Texas Dallas and Hardin Simmons University this week. Both games were overtime thrillers. UT Dallas scored just minutes into the first overtime to win the defensive shootout 1-0 over the Pirates. Saturday's contest was a battle of the offensive lines as the game headed into the extra frames tied 3-3. Southwestern's Thomas Davis scored the game winner and three of the four Pirate goals that evening to hand SU the 4-3 win in double overtime. Southwestern remains on the road this week to face Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday in Belton at 5pm before heading to San  Antonio on the 17th to face Redlands in a neutral-site contest.

#1 Trinity
had a rough time playing in its first games on the road, settling for two double-overtime ties against Hardin-Simmons and UT-Dallas. On Friday night, the Tigers trailed late in the game against HSU, but rallied with a goal in the 71st minute to tie the game and force overtime. Trinity held a 36-10 advantage in overall shots – including 26-5 after the first period – but could not break through with more than the one goal. On Saturday, it was UT-Dallas that equalized with under 20 minutes to play in regulation, after the Tigers had broken a scoreless tie early in the second half. Trinity will play just once this week, returning home for a Friday night matchup with the University of Redlands. The two teams have not met since the third round of the 2002 NCAA Playoffs. The Tigers won the road game 2-0 on their way to the Semifinals.
