Volleyball Recap (Week 7) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Colorado College extended it winning streak to 10 games by going 4-0 at the 2011 Molten Volleyball Spike It Up Classic. With the wins, the Tigers improve their record to 24-5 overall on the season.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College went 2-1 last week, falling 3-0 Texas-Dallas in the team's final home match of the season before sweeping St. Lawrence University and Dallas Christian College at the University of Dallas Fall Break Classic. The 'Roos are now 19-9 overall on the year as they will be seeking another 20 win season when they head to Georgetown this weekend to take on the University of Dallas, Southwestern and Trinity. The 'Roos opened the week with a 25-19, 25-22, 25-9 loss to UTD with both Jessi Fleming and Shelby Eaves totaling 11 kills, while Kelly McDaniel had 26 assists and 13 digs. The team finished the week by topping St. Lawrence 26-24, 25-23, 25-20 behind 18 kills from Fleming and cruising past DCC 25-6, 25-16, 25-8 on Friday night.

Birmingham-Southern had a tough week, playing without head coach Judy Green as well as starting setter Lauren Reibe, who were both out of town due to family emergencies. The Panthers lost both matches this week, falling at home to Faulkner on Thursday, 3-0, and on the road to Shorter on Saturday, 3-0. BSC travels to Pulaski, Tenn., this Tuesday to face Martin Methodist before going to Atlanta this weekend for the SCAC East Interpod, hosted by Oglethorpe, where they'll face Centre and Sewanee on Saturday and the host Petrels on Sunday.

Centre
played three matches this past week, winning two of them. On Wednesday night the Colonels traveled to Maryville (Tenn.) to play the Scots and lost a tough four game match to the hosts. On Saturday Centre hosted Berry and Fisk and picked up  wins in both matches.  Against Berry the Colonels prevailed in four games while Fisk took three games to win. Up next for Centre is senior night on Tuesday against local rival Asbury College and then the final regular season conference matches in Atlanta against Birmingham-Southern, Oglethorpe, and Sewanee over the weekend.

No. 13 Colorado College went undefeated over the weekend to extend its winning streak to 10 games and have only dropped two sets during that time. The Tigers hosted the 2011 Molten Volleyball Spike It Up Classic where it beat Chapman (3-0), York (Pa.) (3-0), UC Santa Cruz (3-1) and Webster (3-0) to earn the tournament title. Senior Amy Schornack was named the tournament Most Valuable Player for the third time this season, while seniors Meredith Ballard and Haley Hamilton were both named to the all-tournament team. The Tigers hit a season-best .448 attack percentage against Chapman to begin the tournament. During the game, the Tigers scored 36 points in a single set against UC Santa Cruz for the first time in program history. The Tigers will host Ursuline College for a mid-week match on Tuesday at 3 p.m. before traveling to Conway, Ark. for the SCAC Central Intra-Pod tournament on Oct. 22-23.

Dallas
(15-13, 4-7 SCAC) went 3-0 on the week, defeating in order Dallas Christian College (3-0), St. Lawrence University (3-1) and Southwestern Christian College (3-0). The Lady Crusaders now boast a season-high five-match winning streak and are winners of nine of their previous ten matches. Dallas looks to send its seniors -- Elizabeth Baska, Danielle Fuchs and Rachel MacGillivray -- out in style on Monday evening, as the team celebrates 'Senior Night' against Arlington Baptist College..

Hendrix (14-12, 5-6) was off this past week. The Warriors have five upcoming matches - at Williams Baptist on Tuesday and at Lyon College on Thursday, before hosting Millsaps, Rhodes and Colorado College at the SCAC Central Inter-Pod Tournament on Saturday and Sunday.

Millsaps
(13-10, 6-5 SCAC) had the week off. The Majors return to action on Oct. 22-23 when they travel to Conway, Ark. to take part in the SCAC Central Crossover at Hendrix. The weekend long tournament will conclude the regular season conference portion of the Majors’ schedule. Millsaps is set to take on Rhodes and Hendrix on Friday before playing 13th-ranked Colorado College on Sunday.

Oglethorpe (6-19, 2-9 SCAC) dropped its only match of the week, 3-0, to Brenau on Oct. 13. The Stormy Petrels return to action Oct. 18 when they host Brewton Parker before hosting the SCAC East Crossover Oct. 22-23. Oglethorpe will play host to Sewanee and Centre on Saturday before finishing out the conference portion of its schedule on Sunday with a match against Birmingham-Southern.

Rhodes went 1-3 at the Cal Lutheran Fall Break Classic. The Lynx lost a tough five set match to Redlands while losing to host Cal Lutheran and Wisconsin Lutheran both in three sets. The team came back after losing the first set to Whittier to win in four sets. Freshman middle blocker Erin Lowrance had solid matches versus Whittier and Wisconsin Lutheran for the Lynx. Lexie Krall led the team with 12 blocks on the weekend while setter Michelle Quina accumulated 57 assists and six service aces for the Lynx during the weekend. 

Sewanee
(4-17, 0-11 SCAC) had the week off. The Tigers return to action on Oct. 18 when they travel to Holly, Miss. to take on Rust College. Sewanee then continues SCAC play by traveling to Atlanta where the Tigers will finish out the SCAC portion of its schedule with the SCAC East Crossover hosted by Oglethorpe. Sewanee will square off against Oglethorpe and Birmingham-Southern on Saturday before finishing the weekend with a match against Centre.

No. 7 Southwestern
had a much needed off week this week and remain at 21-2 on the year and a perfect 11-0 in the SCAC. The Pirates return to the court this weekend, hosting the SCAC West Divisional #2. They open with Austin College on Friday night, face Dallas in their first match on Saturday and close out the event with SCAC-rival Trinity.

Trinity
went 2-0 last week, defeating Texas Lutheran University and Concordia (TX) University in a pair of single matches on Wednesday and Thursday. The Tigers defeated Texas Lutheran 3-0 for the second time this season, then needed five sets to dispatch Concordia 3-2. Trinity improves to 14-12 overall with the two victories. Trinity will travel to Georgetown, Texas, for the SCAC West Divisional # 2 Tournament on Friday and Saturday, finishing off the SCAC portion of its schedule.  The Tigers are currently tied for fourth in the SCAC standings with Millsaps and Birmingham-Southern.
