- AROUND THE SCAC -
Centre opened the season with a 6-1 win over
Kenyon College led by two goals and an assist from both Barbara
Parks and Chelsea Klein. Parks and Erin Bacon each scored in the
opening minutes to put Centre out to a 2-0 lead, and after a Kenyon
goal, the Colonels took a 2-1 lead to the half. A second goal from
Parks pushed the lead back out to 3-1 before Centre pulled away
with three goals in the closing minutes, two of those from Klein
and another by Julia Rogers. Additionally, Courtney Kuiper added
two assists and goalkeeper Patty Cowley made three saves. Centre
outshot Kenyon 19-6 overall. A second match scheduled with Wooster
on Sunday was canceled due to weather.
After graduating eight seniors off of last year's team, freshmen
played a big part in Hendrix's 4-1 season opening
win over Lindenwood in Conway on Sunday. Freshman forward Erika
Jasso netted two goals, including the game-winner, and had an
assist. Freshman forward Lotte Kraaijenbrink scored a goal and
recorded two assists. Junior Maggie DesPain scored the Warriors'
other goal on a penalty corner pass from sophomore Jennifer Koller.
The Warriors fired off 12 shots, with eight on goal. Hendrix'
defense, anchored by freshman Lauren Shklanko, limited the Lady
Lions to just four shots and only one goal. The win was the first
in program history over Lindenwood in eight tries. This week, the
Warriors will travel to Virginia for three matches. Hendrix will
take on Eastern Mennonite in Harrisonburg on Thursday, then will
compete in the MAPP Invitational against host Bridgewater on
Saturday and Sweet Briar on Sunday.
Rhodes started the 2011 campaign strong with
shut out wins over regional powers Wooster and Kenyon. The Lynx
scored four first half goals against The Fighting Scots on Saturday
and held on throughout a scoreless second half for the
victory. On Sunday the Lynx played a more balanced game
scoring three first half goals and adding two in the second period
for the 5-0 win over Kenyon. The Lynx saw the nine goals on
the weekend scored by seven different players with two goals each
coming from first year player Kat Simpson and senior captain
Chelsea McLeod. Rhodes was challenged in the backfield in
both games and saw stellar play from defenders Regan McLaughlin,
Sam Anscher and Sara Sanders. Sophomore and junior
goalkeepers Kelly Whelan and Jordan Robinson split time and had
several great saves each to preserve the shut outs. The Lynx
(2-0) will take on Washington and Lee (1-2) Saturday at 4 pm and
Mary Washington (2-0) Sunday at 1 pm at a tournament in
Fredericksburg, VA.
On the road for their first two contests the Tigers split a pair of
non-conference matches to Ohio Wesleyan and Denision. In their
victory over OW on Saturday senior Elise Landau posted a
career-best three goals in Sewanee’s 4-1
victory.
