SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Trinity tennis players Max Frey and Mackenzie Knoop, and Assistant Coach Jacob McMindes, all earned regional honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
McMindes was named the ITA West Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year, while Knoop was the West Region's Women's Rookie of the Year. Frey earned the honor of ITA West Region Men's Senior Player of the Year.
In his first season as the women's assistant coach, McMindes helped Trinity to an 18-8 overall record, and its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship since 2006. He also led the Tigers to their first NCAA Playoff appearance since 2008, though Trinity lost to Pomona-Pitzer in the second round.
Knoop won the ITA Regional Singles and Doubles Championship last fall, and was Trinity's top line player in both singles and doubles throughout the spring season. She sported a record of 16-6 in singles and 15-8 in doubles this season. Knoop was selected to compete in the NCAA Championships in both singles and doubles, and was the SCAC Women's Tennis Player of the Year.
Frey earned his third SCAC Men's Tennis Player of the Year award in his career, leading Trinity to a record of 21-8 this spring. He paced the Tigers to a third consecutive SCAC Championship, and a third straight appearance in the NCAA Playoffs – though Trinity lost in the NCAA Third Round at Bowdoin. Frey also won the ITA Regional Singles and Doubles Championships last fall, teaming with Erick DelaFuente to finish fifth overall. Frey and DelaFuente have been selected to compete in the NCAA Championships in doubles, and Frey will also compete in the Singles Tournament.
Trinity's men's and women's tennis teams are led by Head Coach Russell McMindes. McMindes is in his third season coaching the Tiger men, and 2011-12 was his first as both the men's and women's head coach. He has secured three men's and one women's SCAC Championship, and has led his teams to the NCAA Playoffs each season. Last fall, he was named the United States Professional Tennis Assocation Texas Division College Coach of the Year.
The Tiger individuals will compete May 24-26 in Cary, North Carolina.
