Trinity University Tabbed As Preseason Favorite To Win 2012 SCAC Baseball Championship

SUWANEE, Ga. - In exclusive voting by the head coaches in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), Trinity University was voted the preseason favorite to win the 2012 SCAC baseball championship. Head coach Tim Scannell's Tigers received nine of the 11 coaches' first-place votes followed by Birmingham-Southern College and Hendrix College each with one first-place vote.

Trinity, who is ranked in the preseason D3baseball.com poll at No. 22, earned the SCAC's automatic bid and the program's sixth appearance in the NCAA Division III regionals last season. The Tigers posted a 34-13 record and the SCAC West Division title in 2011 while securing the program's ninth 30-win season since 2000.

As for the division races, Rhodes College received three of the six first-place votes while tallying 31 points to narrowly beat out Millsaps College (30 points, one first-place vote) and Birmingham-Southern (29 points, two first-place votes) as the preseason favorite to win the East. Birmingham-Southern joined Trinity in the D3baseball.com preseason Top 25 at No. 25. Rounding out the rest of the East Division were Oglethorpe University (17 points), Centre College (12 points) and Sewanee: University of the South (7 points).

In the West, defending SCAC champion Trinity garnered all five first-place votes (25 points) and is favored to win the division. Hendrix, with 19 points, was voted second followed closely by first-year SCAC member the University of Dallas (15 points). Southwestern University (10 points) and Austin College (6 points) complete the West.
