SUWANEE, Ga. - Several SCAC men's lacrosse teams extended their winning streaks during the week of April 2-8. Colorado College extended their streak to 5 straight wins while Centre (4), Birmingham-Southern (2), Sewanee (2) and Southwestern (1) all are riding winning streaks of their own.
AROUND THE SCAC
Birmingham-Southern played only one game this
week, traveling to Atlanta where they shut out Oglethorpe, 24-0.
Freshman Erik Klein led with four goals, while junior Matt Ivie and
freshman John Sommerall added three apiece. Senior Jacob McPherson
and sophomore Michael Sanicola had three assists each, and senior
Chris Clarke led with 11 ground balls. BSC stays on the road this
weekend, facing Millsaps on Friday and Rhodes on
Sunday.
Centre picked up two SCAC wins over the weekend, defeating
Rhodes 15-4 on Friday and Millsaps 22-9 on Sunday at Farris
Stadium. Friday's contest with Rhodes was never in doubt as the
Colonels scored the first eight goals and built a lead as big as
15-1 early in the fourth quarter. Sunday against Millsaps, Centre
found itself hanging on to a 5-4 lead late in the second quarter
before Connor Stubbs scored twice in the final minute before
halftime and twice in the first minute of the third quarter to
start a run of nine straight goals that helped the Colonels pull
away. Stubbs went on to tie a school record with eight goals
against Millsaps after leading the team with four against Rhodes.
This week, the Colonels (9-2, 4-1 SCAC) host Southwestern on Friday
and Dallas on Sunday.
Colorado College scored 11 consecutive goals to build a
commanding lead after 30 minutes and went on to defeat
Southwestern, 14-2, on Friday afternoon. Senior attackman Hunter
Sprole struck for three markers in a little more than 10 minutes to
ignite the balanced Tiger offense. He tied the game 16 seconds
after the Pirates scored the first goal of the game and sophomore
midfielder Jack Kreitler put CC ahead to stay with the first of his
two goals with 9:11 to play in the first quarter. Sprole's second
tally of the game proved to be his second game winner of the season
and he gave the Tigers a 6-1 lead with 22 seconds remaining in the
first quarter. The Tiger defense held its opponent to five or fewer
goals for the third game in a row and the fifth time in nine games
this season. Sophomore long-stick middle P.J. Higgins set a career
high with three caused turnovers. Colorado College returns to
action on Saturday at Hendrix.
Dallas (1-9, 1-5 SCAC) went 0-1 on the week, falling 16-2
to Hendrix in a road contest on Saturday. In defeat, Chris Kerner
and Frank Sporleder provided Dallas' goals, while Crusader
goalkeeper Blaise DuFrain managed 21 saves. On the season,
Sporleder has achieved a team-high 26 goals for the Crusaders,
while Kerner has tallied 16.
Hendrix went 1-1 at home in SCAC play last week. In
Friday’s 16-2 win over Dallas, the Warriors took a program
record 62 shots and set new school bests with 71 ground balls and
16 caused turnovers. Sophomore midfielder Cameron Millstone scored
three goals, all in the fourth quarter, and had an assist to go
with 14 ground balls and went 13-of-17 on face-offs. Sophomore
attacker Dillan Rice also had three goals and an assist with five
ground balls and senior attacker Alex Wilkinson had two goals and
two assists. Senior Don Geders, senior Zach Doelger and freshman
Charles Hotchkiss added two goals apiece and freshmen Sean Tjaden
and Matt Carpenter had a goal. Senior defenseman James Hanson came
up with 11 ground balls and caused three turnovers and junior
Robert McCarthy had eight ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Freshman defenseman Will Tucker set a school record with five
caused turnovers. In Sunday’s 6-3 loss to Southwestern,
Wilkinson, Doelger and freshman Matt Carpenter each scored a goal.
Hendrix will play their final home game of the year on Saturday
against Colorado College.
Millsaps dropped two SCAC contest to Sewanee and Centre.
On Friday, they travel to the mountains in Tennessee to take on the
Sewanee Tigers in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. The
Tigers used a nine and seven goal period to pull away from Millsaps
and defeat the Majors on Friday evening, 24-2. Millsaps came back
on Sunday where they kept within striking distance in the first
half, but the Colonels pulled away in the second half thanks to a
nine goal third quarter to take a win over the Majors, 22-9.
Sophomore Brandon Allison led the offensive attack with four goals
and one assist while sophomore Hunter Stevison added three goals
and one assist. The Majors fall to 2-8 on the season and 1-4 in the
SCAC. They return to home this weekend as they welcome in
Birmingham-Southern at 5 p.m. They then are back in action on
Sunday as they face Oglethorpe for Grillin' and Chillin' Sports Day
with faceoff set for 1 p.m.
Oglethorpe (1-7, 1-4 SCAC) was on the wrong end of a 24-0
decision at home against Birmingham-Southern. Oglethorpe returns to
action on Tuesday, hosting Berry, before traveling to Rhodes and
Millsaps on April 13 and 15, respectively.
Rhodes (1-7, 1-4 SCAC) went 0-2 on the week in
SCAC play. The Lynx opened the week with a 15-4 loss at
Centre. Four different Rhodes players scored a goal for the Lynx as
Elliot Diesel and David Dorris each tallied four ground balls to
lead the defense. Rhodes finished the weekend with a 17-6 loss at
Sewanee. Van Roerty and Hugh Madison each scored two goals to pace
the Lynx offensive attack. Rhodes returns to action on April 13 and
15 when they host Oglethorpe and Birmingham-Southern,
respectively.
Sewanee continued SCAC play with two impressive wins over
the weekend. First, against Millsaps, Sewanee netted a season-high
24 goals in the blowout win over the Majors. A day later, against
long-time rival Rhodes, Sewanee continued its offensive outbreak
with a 17-6 victory over the Lynx. Individually, Jack Thomasson led
Sewanee with seven goals, while Reed Daniel added five and Davis
Brown netted six. Charlie Jackson, Peter Rydell, Drew Lincoln and
John Stiefel all had multiple goals as well. In total, Sewanee
averaged an astonishing 57.5 shots per match. The Tigers also won
an average of 53.5 ground balls per contest. The Tigers continue
conference play against Dallas and Southwestern Friday and Sunday,
at Puett Field.
Southwestern lost a tough matchup against Colorado
college on Friday, 14-2. After a tough second quarter, the Bucs
were able to clamp down in the second half, led by the defense and
DJ Ayala, who scored his first goal of the season to start the
game. He also had 2 GB's and 1 caused turnover as well.
Southwestern won a tough match up against Hendrix on Sunday,
jumping out to a 5-1 halftime lead. The defense was led by Ayala
once again with 6 GB's and 5 caused turnovers for the game. Jamie
Long tabbed three goals on the day to go with one assist, but
Elliott Kelly was the offensive spark with 2 goals and one assist,
including the game winner to seal the victory in the 4th quarter.
Southwestern controls its own destiny in the playoff push, with
trips to Centre and Sewanee this coming weekend.
