Men's Lacrosse Recap (Week 3) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - The Centre men's lacrosse team picked up two more wins this past week and remain the only undefeated team in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Colonels, who are 4-0, have already exceeded their win total from last year's inaugural season.

AROUND THE SCAC

Birmingham-Southern won big twice this week, both at home, downing Piedmont on Wednesday, 25-3, and UMass Boston on Sunday, 21-10. Freshman Erik Klein led with eight goals against Piedmont and senior Jacob McPherson led against UMB with six goals. Junior Brennan Ott led with nine ground balls against Piedmont, and freshman John Sommerall led against UMB with eight. Junior goalie Andrew Huffman got both wins, recording a total of seven saves. BSC is off until March 23 when they open conference play on the road against Southwestern.

Centre defeated Mount St. Joseph 13-10 on Wednesday and Otterbein 13-9 on Saturday, moving to 4-0 on the season and already surpassing the win total it posted in its first season of competition in 2011. Against MSJ, Centre erased an early 3-0 deficit with five second quarter goals to take a 7-5 lead to halftime. Later, after falling behind 9-8, the Colonels scored four straight over a four minute stretch in the fourth quarter to pull ahead for the victory. Wesley Hardman led the Colonels with three goals while Scott Hughes, Zack Connors, Connor Stubbs and Peter Murphy all scored twice. Against Otterbein, Connors scored eight goals and had two assists in the game with six of those goals coming as the Colonels opened up a 8-2 first half lead. Goalie Clayton Brown made eight saves in the victory after making 15 stops against Mount St. Joseph.

Junior attackman Charles Curtis and freshman attackman Henri Halle each scored a pair of goals and set up another as Colorado College overcame a 4-1 second-quarter deficit to defeat Alfred University, 10-5, in its season opener. The come-from-behind victory made a winner out of Sean Woods in his first official game as head coach of the Tigers and extended the program’s home-field winning streak to 10 games. Halle ignited the comeback with a man-up goal with 4:13 remaining in the first half, and tallies by freshman attacker Mackie Greason and sophomore midfielder Jack Kreitler knotted the score 1:44 later. Colorado College saw its 19-game regular-season winning streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon with a 9-6 loss against Hampden-Sydney College in a neutral-site contest at SMU's Gerald R. Ford Stadium. Colorado College returns to action on March 17 when the University of Dallas visits Washburn Field for the first conference game of the 2012 campaign.

Dallas
(0-3, 0-0 SCAC) dropped a 21-4 decision to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on March 9. Leading the Crusaders was midfielder Chris Kerner who scored two of Dallas’ four goals on the afternoon. Dallas picked up 34 ground balls compared to USMMA’s 32 and the Crusaders were 7 for 10 on clears. Dallas returns to action on Saturday, March 17 when they travel to Colorado College for a 3 p.m. contest.

Hendrix
suffered a heartbreaking 9-8 overtime loss at Huntingdon on Sunday. The Warriors led 8-6 after three quarters, but the host Hawks rallied to the game with five seconds remaining in regulation, before winning the game just two minutes into the extra period. Sophomore midfielder Cameron Millstone scored four goals, his third four-goal performance of his career, and took a school record 15 shots, 12 of which were on goal. Millstone was also 11-of-17 on face-offs and came up with 11 ground balls. Senior attacker Alex Wilkinson netted two goals and had an assist. Senior Zach Doelger and freshman Charles Hotchkiss also scored and freshman Patrick Diamonon assisted two goals. Junior defenseman Robert McCarthy scooped up 12 ground balls and senior James Hanson caused four turnovers. As a team, Hendrix recorded a school record 60 ground balls. The Warriors will travel to Ohio to face Kenyon on Saturday and Otterbein on Monday.

Millsaps
(0-3, 0-0 SCAC) dropped a 21-6 decision to Piedmont on Saturday. Leading the Majors was midfielder Brandon Allison who netted three goals on just five shots. Scott Budd, Ryan McKay Hunter Stevison rounded out the Millsaps scoring effort. The Majors return to action on Wednesday, March 14 when they travel to Shorter (7 p.m.) before they finish the week traveling to Huntingdon for a 3 p.m. contest.

Oglethorpe
(0-3, 0-0 SCAC) dropped an 18-3 decision to Susquehanna (Pa.) on Tuesday. Leading the Stormy Petrels was Jake Goodwin, Arness Holsey and Michael Kasmarik who each scored a goal. OU was outshot by a 39-10 margin. The Petrels return to action on Wednesday, March 14 when they travel to Piedmont for a 3:30 p.m. contest against the Lions.

Rhodes will take a nearly three week break before its next game on Saturday, March 24. The Lynx will travel to Jackson, Miss. to play Millsaps in the program’s first-ever SCAC league game. Game time is set for 1 p.m.

Sewanee
improved to 3-2 on the season with an 11-9 win over visiting Carthage. The Tigers (3-2) opened with eight first half goals, including two scores as time expired each quarter. Up 8-3 to start the second half, any momentum Sewanee earned early quickly faded when the Red Men outscored the Tigers 3-0 in the third. Later on, Carthage pulled to within one, 9-8, when Seth Molek netted his third goal. Fortunately, Sewanee responded three minutes later when Palmer Simpson scored off a pass from Trey Burdick. After the Red Men scored on a man-up possession, the Tigers finally pulled away for Carthage when Michael Morris and Reed Daniel scored a pair of goals with under four minutes left. Offensively, Morris led the Sewanee attack with three goals and two assists. Midfielder Pierce Leonard also added a pair of goals on five shots. The Tigers return to action with a 4:00 p.m. contest against Otterbein University March 13, in Sewanee.

Southwestern continues in pursuit of its first win of the season. Tuesday afternoon Southwestern fell 18-13 to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The Pirates held close, matching the Mariners' goals in the first quarter and trailed by just three, 9-6 at halftime. A big third quarter by USMMA allowed them to pull away as SU's fourth quarter surge wasn't enough. Friday night on a frigid and rain soaked evening Southwestern hosted Trine University. The Pirates put together a great second half effort, out-scoring Trine 6-3, but the comeback fell short as they were narrowly defeated 8-7. Southwestern continues their homestand with a game against Drew University on Monday.
