Volleyball Recap (Week 2) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Nationally ranked Colorado College and nationally ranked Southwestern each went 4-0 to win the Molten Colorado College Classic and Cal-Lu-fornia Invitational, respectively the weekend of Sept. 9-11. The two teams are now a combined 15-0 on the season.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College went 4-2 on the week, splitting two matches against Texas College and Ouachita Baptist on Thursday before taking three of four at the 16th Annual Austin College Classic on Friday and Saturday. The 'Roos swept TC 3-0 before falling to OBU 3-1, and then topped Howard Payne 3-0 and came from behind against Southwestern Assemblies of God for a 3-2 win on day one of the AC Classic. On day two, the 'Roos fell 3-1 to McMurry before staging another dramatic rally, this time against Mary Hardin-Baylor, to take a 3-2 win. Jessi Fleming had a huge week for the 'Roos, averaging 4.09 kills and 1.26 blocks with a .430 hitting percentage and Adrienne Reynolds averaged 6.75 digs per set with only two receiving errors in six matches.
  
Birmingham-Southern traveled to Atlanta this weekend for the Doc Partin Classic, hosted by No. 4 Emory University. On Friday, the Panthers lost two hard-fought and close matches, falling to Faulkner, 3-2, and Wheaton, 3-1. On Saturday, BSC faced two top-five opponents in No. 5 Eastern University and No. 4 Emory, and lost to both teams by the score of 3-0. The Panthers are back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Livingston, Ala., to take on West Alabama.

Centre played three matches this week, all with the same 2-3 loss outcome. On Wednesday, September 7 they traveled to The College Mount Saint Joseph located in Cincinnati, Ohio and fell in five games to the Lions. On Saturday the Colonels traveled to Hanover, Ind. to play at Hanover College against Maryville College (Maryville, Tenn.) and Hanover. The team fell in both matches losing 13-15 to Maryville in game five and 17-19 to Hanover in the fifth game.

No. 12 Colorado College
went 4-0 over the weekend to win the 2011 Molten Colorado College Classic that it hosted on Sept. 9-10 in Reid Gymnasium. The Tigers did not lose a single set, going undefeated in 12 sets over the weekend. CC beat Whitman College (3-0), Whitworth University (3-0) and got a pair of 3-0 wins over Dominican University to earn the tournament title. During the tournament, the Tigers held their opponents to a combined .087 hitting percentage over four games. In the final game of the tournament, Colorado College had five players from its starting lineup get at least 11 digs, led by junior Laura Goldsmith with 20. Senior Hannah Varnell added 16 digs, while tournament MVP Amy Schornack added 13 and freshman Julia Lawton got a career-high 12 digs. Freshman Kristen Liberty was also named to the all-tournament team and came up with 11 digs against Dominican. The Tigers return to action next weekend when they host the 2011 Molten Colorado College Invitational on Sept. 16-17 in Reid Gymnasium.

Dallas
dropped four matches over the weekend at the Austin College Classic. The Lady Crusaders lost to Mary Hardin-Baylor (3-0), Hardin-Simmons (3-0), Texas-Tyler (3-1) and Howard Payne (3-2) to drop to 4-5 overall. The Lady Crusaders are back in action on Sept. 17 when they host Texas College and Mid America Christian in a tri-match.

Hendrix went 3-2 on the week, topping Central Baptist in four sets at home on Tuesday, and then going 2-2 at the Rhodes Invitational in Memphis over the weekend. Against CBC, Hendrix hit .258 for the match and finished it off by hitting .500 (15 kills-0 errors-30 attempts) in the final set. Junior middle blocker Melissa Clement led the way with 18 kills and four blocks and freshman libero Ella Concavage-Nasar had 20 digs. The Warriors opened the Rhodes Invitational with a tough, five-set loss to Belhaven. Sophomore setter Zoe Calhoun had 55 assists and Concavage-Nasar came up with 26 digs. The Warriors came up short in a five-set tilt with Augustana to close out play on Friday. Fortunes turned for the Warriors on Saturday, as they started the day with a five-set win over Sewanee. Tied at 2-2 in the fifth set, sophomore Katie Burchfield was in service as Hendrix rattled off 13 straight points to claim the victory. Calhoun set a career-high with 56 assists and Clement had 17 kills and junior Katie Bates chipped in 12. Hendrix ended the tournament with a sweep over Principia. The Warriors will face Huntingdon, Williams Baptist, Rust and Ouachita Baptist as they host the 2011 Hendrix Fall Classic on Friday and Saturday.

Millsaps
completed a perfect record this weekend at the Rhodes Invitational, defeating Principia in four sets, Belhaven in five sets, and Augustana in three sets. Junior Kasey Laird led the way with 33 kills including 18 on Saturday afternoon against the Blazers. The Majors travel to Loyola on Tuesday for a weeknight match set to begin at 7 p.m.

Oglethorpe
picked up its first win of the season during tournament play held on the campus of Berry College this weekend. The Petrels were topped by Berry, Mississippi College and Covenant before rallying to best Huntingdon in 5 sets for the team's first win. The weekend began with a straight sets defeat at the hands of Berry College, 3-0. Anna Marie Disalvo led the Oglethorpe attack against the Vikings with 10 kills and 8 digs while Kaily Yarbrough paced the squad with 13 digs. Friday's matches concluded with a 3-1 loss to Mississippi College. Kate Cassell managed 11 digs and Disalvo slammed 11 kills to lead Oglethorpe in the match. On Saturday the Petrels lost 3-0 to Covenant. Oglethorpe finally broke through in the tournament finale with a thrilling 3-2 win over Huntingdon. The Petrels (1-6) will travel to face Shorter for a mid-week contest before hosting Coastal Georgia and Andrews College.

Rhodes
finished 2-1 at this weekend’s Rhodes Invitational. The Lynx opened up the Rhodes Invitational with a 3-0 victory over Principia College. Senior Outside Hitter Claire Warren led all attackers with 10 kills while Right Side Lexie Krall had 8 kills with no errors on 17 attempts. Setter Michelle Quina led the team with 3 service aces while Libero Maraia Tremarelli anchored the team's defense with 25 digs. The Lynx defeated a very tough Augustana in three straight sets to open up day two. Warren again led the Lynx with 13 kills, hitting .391 for the match. Junior outside hitter Meagan Mansfield made her return to the court after an ankle injury last week and added 8 more kills for the Lynx. Rhodes then dropped a 3-1 decision to Belhaven (Miss.).

After posting an impressive 3-1 mark to open the season, Sewanee struggled with its first road trip of the year. The Tigers fell in all four of their contests at the Rhodes Invitational. Despite the team losses Sewanee middle hitter Kayla Sewell was selected to the all-tournament team for her outstanding play over the weekend.  The freshman from Calhoun, Tennessee recorded 35 kills and 61 digs during the Tigers’ four games of the tournament.  Sewell hit .412 against Hendrix on Saturday and .471 in the Augustana match on Friday.

No. 10 Southwestern continued its tear through non-conference play as they swept four games at the highly competitive Cal-Lu-fornia Invitational this weekend to move to 7-0 on the season. Southwestern opened the weekend against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps early Friday. CMS gave the Pirates a tough battle, But the Pirates emerged with the win in four sets. SU then swept Redlands to close out day one.  Saturday, the Pirates beat Pomona-Pitzer in three sets. The final game of the tournament was the showcase game, pitting the #14 Pirates against the host school, #10 California Lutheran. Southwestern came out strong to win the first set 25-21 but dropped set two 18-25. That is as close as the Regals would get as SU took the third and fourth set 25-19, 25-22. Southwestern will look to continue its run as they head to the Trinity National Invitational this coming weekend.

No. 23 Trinity
lost four games at the challenging Doc Partin Classic over the weekend, falling to two teams ranked in the top five nationally. The Tigers lost to both #5 Eastern and #4 Emory (the tournament host) on Friday, and then lost 3-0 to Wheaton (IL) and 3-2 to Faulkner to finish the tournament on Saturday afternoon. Trinity returns home for a two-day tournament this weekend, playing Occidental, St. Thomas, Carthage, and Texas Lutheran on Friday and Saturday.  St. Thomas is ranked seventh nationally, and will be the fourth top-10 team the Tigers have faced this season.
