CARY, N.C. - Trinity men's tennis players Max Frey and Erick DelaFuente lost in the opening round of the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships on Friday.
Frey and DelaFuente teamed up for the doubles competition, while Frey also competed in the singles tournament. The Tiger players lost a narrow, three-set match in the 16-team doubles competition, and Frey was also upset in the opening round of singles.
Frey lost 4-6, 4-6 to Mark Kahan of Amherst College, and Kahan went on to win again later in the day to reach the Quarterfinals. Last season, Frey reached the NCAA Singles Semifinals before being eliminated.
DelaFuente and Frey lost to the team of Warren Elgort and Jacob Barnaby from Johns Hopkins University in the opening round of the tournament. The Tiger duo lost 6-7 (7), 6-3, 6-7 (5), missing out on a chance to reach tomorrow's Quarterfinals in doubles.
Frey was the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year for the third time in his career, leading Trinity to its third consecutive SCAC Championship, and its third straight appearance in the NCAA Playoffs.
The Trinity men's tennis team won its opening round playoff game against Swarthmore College, but lost a tough match-up the next day at Bowdoin College in Maine.
