Women's Soccer Recap (Week 5) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - In a battle of top 15 teams in the country Trinity knocked off Centre for the second year in a row by just a single goal. This year it took two overtimes and once again it was Abby Loar who notched the game winning goal for the TU Tigers.

- AROUND THE SCAC -

Austin College split its two matches over the weekend, getting goals from four different players in a 4-0 win over Oglethorpe to start the weekend before falling 2-1 in overtime at Birmingham-Southern. The 'Roos are now 5-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Against Oglethorpe, Ali Ryan got things started with a goal from an assist by Natalie Nelms, and Ali Fidel, Gabby Mavelian and KK Peters all netting second half goals with Maddy Millender and Ariel Marder each registering an assist. Against BSC, the 'Roos fell behind 1-0 early in the second half but Kelsey D'Amore found Ali Ryan for a diving header to square things up and send the game into overtime, but the Panthers were able to get the winner with 2:33 left in the period. Maya Warnock had four saves in the game for Austin College. This weekend the 'Roos host Centre and Sewanee for two more SCAC matches.

Birmingham-Southern was 2-0 this week at home to open conference play, defeating Dallas, 1-0, Friday, and Austin, 2-1, Sunday in overtime. Sophomore Amanda Babbin scored the Panthers' lone goal against the Crusaders, while senior Alicia Plotky and sophomore Bailey Kimbell scored each of the two goals against Austin, with Kimbell scoring the game-winner in overtime. Senior Linda Amaya also recorded two assists in the Austin game. The Panthers have now won four straight games, and go on the road again this weekend, stepping out of conference to play Agnes Scott, Friday, in Decatur, Ga., before traveling to face Hendrix, Sunday.

Friday night, #13 Centre fell 2-1 to #5 Trinity University in double-overtime. Sunday, Centre defeated Southwestern University, 2-0 in regulation play. Centre travels to Texas this weekend for matches against Austin and the University of Dallas. Friday night at Austin, kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm CST

Dallas (9-3 (1-1)) finished their two-game week with a 1-1 record. The Lady Crusaders traveled to Birmingham, Ala., to square off with Birmingham-Southern College (Ala.) on Friday evening. Dallas fell in this game – the SCAC opener – by a score of 1-0. In their most recent game, the team was able to outlast Oglethorpe University (Ga.) in Atlanta, 2-1, thanks to unassisted second half scores by a pair of freshmen, defender Erin Jones and midfielder Michele Carpenter. This week, Dallas will host Sewanee: University of the South (Tenn.) and Centre College (Ky.).

The Warriors started the SCAC schedule with two tough road losses. Hendrix lost to Millsaps 2-0 on Friday night then 1-0 to Rhodes on Sunday. The Warriors gave up two second half goals to the Majors. Hendrix had a 6-4 shots on goal advantage in the game. On Sunday, the Lynx scored in the 66th minute to gain the 1-0 win. Hendrix senior Allison Mosley recorded seven saves in the game. Hendrix will host SCAC rivals Oglethorpe on Friday and Birmingham-Southern on Sunday.

Millsaps had a big weekend as they picked up their first SCAC win of the season and gained a non-conference victory over Huntingdon. After falling to rival Mississippi College during the week, the Majors took control from the opening whistle to the final horn as they knocked off the Hendrix Warriors 2-0 at Harper Davis Field on Friday evening. The win ended a 15-conference losing streak and brought the Majors to 1-0 in SCAC play. Sophomore Kaleigh Redhead picked up a goal and a assist and junior Margaret Eggers added a goal. On Sunday, the Majors traveld to Montgomery, Alabama and knocked off the Huntingdon Hawks 2-0. Eggers and junior Dora Lambert added goals while Redhead picked up another assist along with Grace Gremillion. Senior goalkeeper Molly Beth Jourdan earned a clean sheet on the weekend.

Oglethorpe went 0-3 this past week, losing a nonconference tilt to Huntingdon last Wednesday (L, 0-1) before being swept in SCAC play by Austin (L, 4-0) and Dallas (L, 2-1). In a tight, closely played affair on Wednesday, the Huntingdon Hawks got a goal in the game's 60th minute and made it hold up despite a furious attack by the Petrels to net the equalizer. The Hawks' Jessica Salinas took a carom off a Petrel inside the box and redirected it into the top left corner of the goal to put Huntingdon on top at the 59:10 mark of the contest. Oglethorpe continued to press Huntingdon throughout the final 30 minutes, including cracking 12 shots to Huntingdon's 4 in the second stanza alone, but could not get one past the Hawks keeper. In all, Oglethorpe outshot Huntingdon 17-11 on the evening and earned 6 corner kicks to the Hawks' 2 but could not get one of their free kicks on target. On Friday, the Kangaroos jumped in front of the Petrels 1-0 in the first half and then tallied three second half strikes to put the game away. The 'Roos jumped on the scoreboard in the 20th minute when Ali Ryan chipped a low cross past keeper Elia Breijo for the score. The Petrels did well the remainder of the half in keeping a pressing Austin team off the scoreboard but the 'Roos relentless pressure eventually yielded the three second half strikes. Demonstrating their advantage in numbers, Austin played 23 different players in the contest while Oglethorpe head coach Alan Woods, beset by injuries, was only able to use 12. The Kangaroos took advantage of their fresh legs to outshoot Oglethorpe 31-3 on the afternoon. Despite the offensive onslaught by Austin, Breijo was excellent in goal for the Petrels, recording 13 saves in the contest. On Sunday against Dallas, the Petrels jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first half but could not make it hold up in the second en route to the narrow defeat. In just the game's seventh minute Oglethorpe grabbed the lead on a highlight reel goal when Sasha Alonzon played a beautiful through ball down the right flank that Clara St. Urbain touched past two Dallas defenders and cracked into the top left corner from 20 yards out. Lifted by the tally, Oglethorpe played solid throughout the remainder of the half and entered the break with the 1-0 advantage. The Crusaders, however, rallied with two second strikes within 8 minutes of one another. The first came in the 65th minute off a corner that fell 2 yards from the goal and was stabbed in by Dallas. The second came in the 73rd minute on an unassisted strike from Michelle Carpenter off a ball sent in from the left that went untouched. The Petrels mustered a few breath-taking chances in the dying minutes but could not get the equalizer they so eagerly sought. The Petrels are now 1-5-1 on the season and will travel to face Hendrix College this Friday at 6:00 p.m. in Conway, Arkansas.

Rhodes defeated visiting Hendrix College 1-0 in SCAC play this past weekend.  Both teams would battle through the 1st half in a scoreless tie.  The Lynx found the game winner in the 66th minute when freshmen Kelsey Keown found sophomore Maddy Esther for the score.  The Lynx defense buckled down and held the Warriors to only 1 shot on goal.  Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Sermonet posted her first shutout in SCAC play.  The Lynx are back in action when they travel this weekend to Trinity University on Friday and Southwestern University on Sunday.

In its opening weekend of SCAC play the Sewanee women's soccer team split a pair of league matches. First on Friday night the Tigers closed out Southwestern 2-0, after scoring a pair of goals in the second half. Sewanee then followed that contest up by losing to unbeaten Trinity 3-0. Overall, Sewanee got goals from Allie White and Bess Goodman.

Southwestern opened SCAC conference action with a tough road trip, falling 2-0 to both Sewanee and Centre to fall to 4-4-1 on the year, 0-2 in the SCAC. The Pirates just couldn't get their offense going in either game. Sewanee scored one goal in each half and SU was outshot 23-9 in the game and had nine fewer corner opportunities. It was the same story at Centre as the Colonels posted a goal in each half to win 2-0. Southwestern took seven shots to Centre's 10 and have two more corner kicks (5-3). The Pirates will search for their first conference win at home this weekend as they play host to Millsaps on Friday night and Rhodes on Sunday.

#5 Trinity went 3-0 for the week, including two road wins in SCAC play against Centre College and Sewanee: University of the South. The Tigers opened the week with a 7-0 win over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday, then earned a gritty 2-1 win in double-overtime at Centre on Friday. Trinity finished the weekend with a 3-0 shutout win at Sewanee on Sunday afternoon. Friday marked the first goal scored against Trinity in seven full games, and the Tigers scored with just over five minutes remaining to tie the game against Centre. Abby Loar scored the game-winner in double-overtime for the second time this season, having done the same earlier this year against Hardin-Simmons. Katie Garrett recorded her 100th career save on Sunday at Sewanee, while Loar moved into the top five in career goals, assists, and points for the Tigers. The Tigers return home this weekend to face both Rhodes and Millsaps for more SCAC action. Trinity defeated both teams last year, edging Rhodes 2-1 and blanking Millsaps 7-0.
