BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Trinity Tiger men's tennis team lost a 5-1 match against Bowdoin College in the regional finals of the NCAA Playoffs on Sunday afternoon.
Trinity is eliminated from the postseason with the loss, finishing the season with a record of 21-8, and missed a chance to reach the Quarterfinals for the third straight year.
The Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead after winning 8-6 at No. 2 doubles. Jordan Mayer and Greg Haugen took the victory to get on the board first.
Max Frey and Erick DelaFuente suffered a narrow 9-8 loss at the top position in doubles, then Bowdoin took its first lead with an 8-6 win over Trinity's Charlie Curtis and Aaron Skinner at line three. It was just the second doubles loss of the season for Curtis and Skinner.
Haugen lost 5-7, 1-6 at No. 3 singles to put Bowdoin up 3-1, and the Tigers lost the opening set in five of the six singles match-ups. Mayer lost 2-6 in his first set at line five, but rallied to win 6-2 in his second set.
Frey was edged 6-7 at No. 1 singles, then fell 0-6 to make it a 1-4 deficit for the Tigers. Shortly after, Curtis fell 2-6, 3-6 at the fourth position in the clinching match.
Mayer was trailing 2-5 in the third set, while DelaFuente was down 3-6, 4-5 at line two. Skinner who won 6-2 in his opening set, and also led 3-2 in set two when the match ended.
While the team will not advance to the next round in Cary, North Carolina, two individuals will compete in the singles and doubles competition on May 24-26. Frey will be in the NCAA Singles Championships, and will also team with DelaFuente in the Doubles Championships.
