SUWANEE, Ga. - Only six of the SCAC's 12 teams were in action the week of December 5-11. As a result, the schedule was light as only nine games were played throughout the league. Birmingham-Southern continued its home-court winning streak and Rhodes extended its best start to a season since 2008-09.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College improved to 4-3 with a 68-64 win
over Webster University in their lone game of the week, getting a
career best 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting from Alen Michael in the
win. Michael also added six boards and Josh Saunders scored 15
points while Jordan Hancock scored 14 and added four assists. The
'Roos are back in action tonight against Fontbonne.
No. 18 Birmingham-Southern played one game at
home this week, defeating Point University for the Panthers' 35th
straight home victory, a streak dating back to the end of the
2008-09 season. BSC stands at 7-0 on the season, the only
undefeated team in the league. Senior Jasen Jonus led all players
with 23 points against Point, hitting six of the Panthers' 19
three-pointers. Junior Zac Richards recorded 14 points, sophomore
Nick Murphy had 12, and junior Kevin Kegarise scored 11. Junior
Blaise White led with eight assists and five rebounds. The Panthers
resume conference play this weekend on the road, traveling to face
Centre on Friday and Sewanee on Sunday.
Centre (4-3, 1-1 SCAC) took to the week off for
final exams. The Colonels return to action on December 16 and 18
when they host 18th-ranked Birmingham-Southern and Sewanee,
respectively. Last season Centre split with BSC with the Colonels
taking a 62-45 win in Danville before finishing the regular season
with a 67-63 loss in Birmingham a year ago. Centre swept Sewanee
65-51 at Sewanee and 70-35 in Danville.
Freshman forward Chris Lesnansky scored 17 of his game-high 20
points in the second half, but Colorado College
needed seven straight from sophomore guard Ryan Milne during the
final 2:08 to escape with a 73-70 victory over Johnson & Wales
University on Tuesday. Milne finished with 19 points and dished out
a game-high seven assists as CC won on the road for the first time
this season. Senior forward Jeremiah Waters added 17 points, 12 of
which came on shots from behind the three-point line during the
second half. Milne scored 20 points on Saturday at Wartburg, but
Colorado College shot just 30.8-percent from the field and saw its
three-game winning streak snapped with a 64-52 loss. CC battled
back to within 56-46 when Milne drained his third trey of the
contest with 4:07 to play, but that was as close as the Tigers
would get. Lesnansky and junior forward Ian Rewoldt had six
rebounds apiece to lead the CC. The Tigers put their share of first
place in the West Division on the line on Saturday when they travel
to Hendrix for their final game before the Christmas Break.
Hendrix (1-5, 1-1 SCAC) was off the past week
for finals. The Warriors will host Colorado College on Saturday at
Grove Gymnasium. Las season Hendrix was swept by the Tigers, 68-48
and 84-80. The Warriors last beat Colorado College 88-78 on
February 21, 2010.
Millsaps (4-2, 1-1 SCAC) took the week off for
final exams. The Majors return to action on December 15 and 16 when
they travel to Covenant and LaGrange respectively. Millsaps will
then take nearly two weeks off for the holidays and resume play by
playing in the Belhaven Classic December 29-30.
Oglethorpe (4-5, 0-1 SCAC) slit a pair of games
last week, falling to #9 Emory 60-54 then beating Covenant 78-72 in
overtime. Against Emory, the Stormy Petrels were led by Christian
Molinet and Alec Pitts who each scored a team-high 16 points. They
were the only two OU players in double-figures. Emory held a 15
point lead (51-36) with just over seven minutes remaining before
Oglethorpe trimmed the lead down to four with 38 seconds left
thanks to a 16-5 run. However, that was as close as the Petrels
would get as the Eagles held on for the six point win. Against
Covenant, Oglethorpe had four players in double-figures. Andrew
Steioff scored a team-high 15 points as OU outscored the Scots 13-7
in the extra session. The game was tied 30-30 at halftime.
Rhodes (6-2, 2-0 SCAC) won its only game of the
week against Rust, 86-62 on December 6. The Lynx were led by
sophomore guard Andrew Galow’s 20 points and Michael
Gallagher’s 19 points. Galow shot 7 of 11 from the floor and
added five assists and three rebounds. Gallagher shot 5 of 10 from
the floor including 4 of 9 from 3-point range. Rhodes resumes play
on December 17 and 18 hosting the Rhodes Christmas Invitational.
The Lynx are off to their best start since they opened up the
2008-09 season 6-2.
Sewanee opened a 38-8 lead midway through the
first half en route to a 86-42 victory over Johnson University
Tuesday inside Juhan Gymnasium. With the win, the Tigers
improve to 4-3 this season. Sewanee took a commanding lead
into the intermission. The Tigers shot 68 percent the first half
while holding Johnson to a 5-of-22 (22.7 percent)
performance. In the second half, things stayed the same.
Sewanee opened with a 22-7 run which gave the Tigers a 76-22 lead
with 10:06 to play. Johnson cut the deficit to 44 when Cebastiano
Loius made a pair of free throws with 1:20
remaining. Freshman Robert Veal led the Tigers with
a career-high 15 points. Sophomore Valentino Bryant added
13 points while forward Anvil Nelson pitched in 11 points on
5-of-6 shooting. This week the Tigers continue SCAC play when
Oglethorpe and Birmingham-Southern come to the Mountain Friday and
Sunday.
Southwestern (0-8, 0-2 SCAC) had the week off
from action. The Pirates return to the court this weekend as they
face Austin College on Friday night and the University of Dallas on
Saturday.
Trinity returns to action after taking
last week off, and will host a pair of SCAC games over the weekend.
The Tigers will make their home debut against the University of
Dallas on Friday and then take on Austin College on Saturday.
