Men's Lacrosse Recap (Week 9) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Colorado College, Birmingham-Southern Centre, and Sewanee will compete for the 2012 SCAC men's lacrosse championship April 27 & 29. The winner of the four team tournament wins the league's automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship.

AROUND THE SCAC

Birmingham-Southern played twice at home this weekend to wrap up the regular season, and both games turned out to be close ones. On Friday, the Panthers came back from a 13-9 deficit and defeated Centre, 16-14, and on Sunday the tables were turned as Sewanee overcame a 6-0 BSC lead to win 11-10. The Panthers have clinched the second seed in the upcoming SCAC Championship, which they are hosting, and will face Centre  in the first round on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Centre wrapped up the regular season with a split of two games over the weekend, falling 16-14 at Birmingham-Southern on Friday before bouncing back with a 24-2 win at Oglethorpe on Sunday. Against BSC, the Colonels built a 13-9 lead at the end of three quarters, but the Panthers scored six straight goals to start the fourth quarter and capture the victory. On Sunday, the Colonels scored the first 20 goals of the game and held Oglethorpe scoreless until the fourth quarter. The 24 goals set a school record for goals in a game, and 15 Colonels scored in all. A year after finishing 3-10, Centre finishes the regular season with a 12-3 record with a 7-2 mark in SCAC play.

Colorado College sophomore attackman Jake Smith and freshman attackman Dylan Davie each scored four goals and added an assist during Friday’s 25-2 victory at Rhodes. Smith struck for five goals and set up five more as Colorado College extended its winning streak to eight games with a 25-2 victory over Millsaps College on Sunday afternoon. After Millsaps scored a man-up goal 3:50 into the second quarter, the Tigers ran off 10 unanswered tallies to build a 16-1 lead after 30 minutes. Colorado College added nine consecutive goals in the second half before the Majors scored with 15 seconds to play. Senior long-stick midfielder Zach Pierce and freshman defender Connor Ervin caused three turnovers apiece for CC, which recorded a season-high 22 as a team. Sprole and freshman attackman Bennett Krishock finished with three goals, while senior attackman Moses Taylor added a pair of scores to go with two assists.

Dallas
(2-12, 1-8 SCAC) ended its 2012 season with a 22-1 road loss to Southwestern.

Hendrix
ended the 2012 season with a pair of road wins. On Friday, freshman attacker Charles Hotchkiss scored a school record seven goals to lead Hendrix to a 19-1 win at Millsaps. Sophomore midfielder Cameron Millstone also registered eight points on three goals and five assists to go with eight ground balls and was 14-of-18 on face-offs. Senior attacker Alex Wilkinson had four goals and two assists and senior Zach Doelger recorded a goal and three assists. Freshman Sean Tjaden came up with a goal and an assist and Don Geders and Matt Carpenter each recorded a goal. Junior defenseman Robert McCarthy came up with a game-best 12 ground balls, scored a goal and caused two turnovers. Senior keeper Keith Clemens recorded an assist and seven saves. Hendrix topped Rhodes 9-5 on Sunday in the season finale. With the win, the Warriors tied their program record with five wins, set last year.

Millsaps
suffered a pair of tough losses this past weekend as they fell to Hendrix, 19-1 on Friday before falling to Colorado College on Sunday, 25-2. The Majors conclude the season with a 3-11 record and 2-7 overall in the SCAC. Millsaps picked up their first win this season and there first conference win.

Oglethorpe
finished the 2012 season by dropping three home contests this past week. Oglethorpe fell to Huntingdon (L, 14-10) on Wednesday before losing weekend SCAC clashes with Sewanee (L, 13-5) and Centre (L, 24-2). The Petrels jumped on top but could not hold the lead. The two teams alternated goals at the onset with the Petrels' Coleman Plaisted netting a hat trick among Oglethorpe's first four goals to lead the way. After Plaisted's third tally with 9:04 remaining in the second quarter the score was knotted at 4 apiece. Arness Holsey and Michael Kasmarik rattled off the next two goals to give Oglethorpe a 6-4 lead which ultimately stood at 6-5 heading into halftime. The Hawks then scored the first four goals of the second half to take control. Against Sewanee, the Petrels fell behind 7-1 early on before just being outscored 6-4 in the latter stages of the game. Against Centre, the colonels manhandled the Petrels on their way to the impressive 24-2 win. Junior Michael Kasmarik scored both the Petrel goals in the season-ending loss to the Colonels.

Rhodes went 0-2 on the week in SCAC play. The Lynx  opened the week with a 25-4 loss to Colorado College before ending the weekend with a 9-5 loss to Hendrix. Rhodes finishes its inaugural men’s lacrosse season at 2-10 overall and 2-8 in SCAC play.

Sewanee
closed out the regular season on a roll. First. on Friday, the Tigers earned their fifth straight win after defeating the Stormy Petrels 13-5. Two days later, the Tigers used a massive comeback to defeat BSC, 11-10. The Tigers enter the SCAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed. Sewanee has also won six straight games.

On Saturday afternoon Southwestern hosted its final home game of the season and defeated the University of Dallas 22-1. The game served as not just senior day for three seniors, Donnie Murray, Chris O'Quain and Jack Parker, but was also a Green-Out game as SU lacrosse supported the HEADstrong Foundation. The Pirates posted four goals in the first quarter before busting things open with seven goals in the second and third quarters. UD's Cody Wooten kept the shutout from becoming a reality, scoring with 1:07 left on the clock to arrive at the 22-1 final. Carter Cowan, Tyler Downing and Jamie Long posted five goals each in the win. Southwestern ends their season with a 5-11 overall record and 5-4 in the SCAC.
