SCAC Names Owen and Brown Golf Coaches-Of-The-Year

SUWANEE, Ga. - In exclusive voting by the head coaches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), Jim Owen and Bruce Brown were named men's and women's golf Coaches-of-the-Year.

Jim Owen of Oglethorpe University was honored as men's Coach-of-the-Year for the 12th time in 14 years. The Petrels won their league-high tenth SCAC men's golf title at this year's conference tournament at Tunica National, in Tunica, Miss., and went on to 2012 NCAA Division III Championships where the team earned its second National Championship in the past four years. With the victory, Oglethorpe becomes just the sixth men's golf program to win multiple Division III titles. Only Cal State Stanislaus (12 titles) and Methodist University (10 titles) have more championships than Oglethorpe's two. Owen also led Oglethorpe to its first men's golf team national title in 2009. With his 12 men's golf COTY awards, Owen is now tied with Trinity University's head men's soccer coach Paul McGinlay for the most COTY honors in the same sport in SCAC history.

Like Owen, Bruce Brown of Centre College guided his squad to a conference title and was rewarded with his first-ever SCAC women's Coach-of-the-Year honor. The conference title was Centre's first in 18 years of SCAC competition. Centre also captured the conference's automatic qualification into the NCAA Division III Championships, the third straight year the Colonels have competed in the tournament, and the second time they have finished in the top seven nationally after finishing an SCAC-best fourth.
