SUWANEE, Ga. - Birmingham-Southern junior running back Shawn Morris ran for a career-high 202 yards on 20 carries and scored three touchdowns in the Panthers' 34-10 win at Austin College. Elsewhere, Millsaps rallied and held off an upset minded Sewanee team, 21-20.

Austin College fell 34-10 to
Birmingham-Southern on Saturday, dropping the ‘Roos to 0-5
overall and 0-2 in conference play on the year. The Panthers used a
dominant ground game, which produced 379 rushing yards including
264 in the first half alone to take a 24-0 halftime lead and expand
that lead to 34-3 before a late Austin College touchdown run by
Broc Boyd made it a 34-10 final. Shane Hodge led Austin College
with 45 rushing yards on nine carries and Braydon MaQuar caught
nine passes for 60 yards to pace the ‘Roos offensively, and
Sean Sweeney had a big day both on defense and in special teams,
making 11 tackles with a forced fumble and averaging 34.3 yards per
return on four kickoffs with a long of 58 yards. Austin College
hosts Millsaps College this weekend with kickoff set for 1
p.m.
Birmingham-Southern stayed undefeated this week with a
34-10 win against Austin College on the road. Junior tailback Shawn
Morris rushed for a school record 202 yards in the win, breaking
his own record that he set earlier this season. He also scored
three touchdowns. The Panthers, who lead the SCAC in total offense,
piled up 548 yards, including 379 on the ground. BSC held the
Kangaroos to just 216 yards offense and 69 yards rushing. In
addition to Morris' record-setting day, junior quarterback Jimmy
Stainback was 16-26 passing for 169 yards and the one
touchdown. Sophomore wide receiver Tyler Johnson of Milton,
Fla., caught seven of those passes for 70 yards. Senior linebacker
Dustin Massey of Geraldine led BSC with 11 tackles including a sack
and a tackle for a loss. After taking this week off,
Birmingham-Southern finally returns home again Oct. 15 to face
conference opponent Centre College in Panther Stadium at 1 p.m.
For the second time in the last three seasons, Centre has started a season 4-0 after defeating DePauw 24-10 in Greencastle, Ind. over the weekend. The last time the Colonels began 4-0 was in 2009, when they finished 7-2. The win also marked the second straight win at DePauw as the Colonels won 34-24 in 2009. Centre out-gained the Tigers 329-284 marking the second consecutive game holding an opponent to less than 300 total offensive yards. The Colonels have now allowed only 66 total points this year while scoring 149. Both numbers are good for second among the league’s seven teams. Centre will take a week off and then play at Birmingham-Southern the following week.
Millsaps used 14 points in the second half and a strong defensive effort to defeat the Sewanee Tigers 21-20. With the win, the Majors improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Joplin started the game and played terrific going 20-for-31 for 203 yards and three touchdowns. Theriot had one of his best days rushing of his career as he ran for 106 yards on 21 carries and caught three passes for 32 yards and a game winning touchdown. O'Rear broke out this game with eight catches and 114 yards receiving with two touchdowns. Defensively, junior Jeb White led the way with seven tackles and a forced fumble while sophomore Joiner Stewart added seven as well. The defense held Sewanee to only 216 yards of total offense. The Majors travel to Austin College next week to take on the Kangaroos.
In a back and forth game that saw four lead changes, Rhodes defeated LaGrange 31-24 at Fargason Field Saturday. The Lynx were led on offense by Sophomore Running Back Dane Wilson who amassed 131 yards rushing on 21 carries with 3 TDs and Buddy Legens who had 13 receptions for 158 yards. Starting his second game of the season, Senior Quarterback Brett Stoots was 21 of 34 for 262 yards. LaGrange was led by QB Ed Russ who rushed for 114 yards and 1 TD. After the Panthers were able to score a touchdown with no time remaining on the clock, the Lynx went into halftime with a 21-14 lead. The Panthers tied the game at 21 on the opening drive of the Second Half. After driving deep into Panther territory, Stoots was intercepted again. On their next position, cornerback Brian Walton made a touchdown saving tackle on a Russ 50 yard run. The Lynx were able to force a field goal. A 26 yard Field Goal by Lukas Stockhausen put the Lynx up 31-24 and the Lynx defense shut the door on the Panthers with an Interception by Linebacker Tom Zigtema to seal the victory. Zigtema led the Lynx with 13 tackles. The Lynx have a bye next week and then will travel to Jackson, MS to play Millsaps on Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.
For the second straight week the Sewanee entered the fourth quarter with a lead, however just like last week's game against Birmingham-Southern, the Tigers failed to hold on to that margin, as Millsaps rallied for a 21-20 win Saturday at McGee Field at Harris Stadium. Overall, the Tigers were held to a season-low 136 rushing yards, while losing the total yards battle to the Majors 377-216. One of the biggest differences in the game was Millsaps ability to convert on third down. The Majors went 11-of-18 on third down conversions, while Sewanee struggled to move the chains going 2-of-11 .Individually, senior fullback Zeke Wilson had a team-high 50 yards rushing on just nine carriers, while Johnson added 108 yards of total offense for Sewanee. This week Sewanee will take its second longest road trip of the fall as they take on SCAC foe Trinity. Trinity is 20-4 all-time against Sewanee, which includes last year' 17-3 win. The Tigers last beat Trinity in 1992.
No. 18 Trinity returns to action after having
its bye week last weekend, and will host Sewanee to continue SCAC
play on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers return home for the first
time in a month, having played each of the last two games on the
road. Trinity is 20-4 all-time against Sewanee, currently on an
18-game win streak in the series. Last season, Trinity won 17-3 in
Sewanee, while Trinity won 40-0 in the last meeting in San Antonio
between the two teams.
