Field Hockey Recap (Week 3) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Rhodes knocked off Hendrix in the first SCAC contest of the 2011 season 5-1. After trailing 1-0 at the half, Katie Faucher led the Lynx with a second half hat trick on the way to victory. The win marks the 13th straight regular season conference win for Rhodes with their last loss coming to DePauw back on October 4th, 2009.

- AROUND THE SCAC -

Centre went 1-2 on the week, falling 4-1 to Bellarmine on Wednesday and losing 3-1 at Denison on Saturday before bouncing back with a 4-1 win Sunday at Transylvania. Against Bellarmine, Leah Oberst assisted Erin Bacon on an early game tying goal, but it was the Colonels' only score as Bellarmine pulled away for the 4-1 win. At Denison, two quick goals just before the half put Centre in a 2-0 hle, and the Colonels managed just a Sydney White goal ona Courtney Kuiper assist off a penalty corner. At Transylvania, the Colonels got back on the winning track with first half goals from Sarah Jessee, Leah Storch and Chelsea Klein. A Barbara Parks goal extended the lead to 4-0 before Transylvania put in a late goal. Cece Lindsey had eight saves in goal while Jessee and Katy Meyer had assists. Centre has two matches this week as it opens SCAC play with Sewanee on Friday and hosts Wittenberg on Sunday.

After a 4-0 start to the season, Hendrix lost their SCAC opener at Rhodes 5-1 on Saturday. The Warriors  took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when junior defender Maggie DesPain scored her third goal of the season on a pass from freshman forward Erika Jasso. The Lynx scored five goals in the second half, including a hat trick by Katie Faucher. The Lynx outshot the Warriors 13-2 and had a 14-6 penalty corner advantage. Freshman Betsy Kelly had five saves for the Warriors. Hendrix will host Transylvania in a non-conference match-up on Saturday, Sept. 24.

Rhodes
won their home and SCAC opener 5-1 over Hendrix in dramatic fashion after trailing 1-0 at the half. Hendrix’ Maggie Despain scored the Warriors’ lone goal midway through the first half on a fast break opportunity. The Lynx came out of the break strong and scored two goals in ten minutes then followed with three more during the half. Katie Faucher led the offense with a hat trick including the game tying and game winning goals. Seniors Taylor Mills and Chelsea McLeod scored a goal each while Kat Simpson and Sarah Kennedy tallied assists. Sam Anscher and Sara Sanders had great games in the middle for the Lynx as did Sarah Kennedy. On the defensive end Regan McLaughlin silenced Hendrix leading scorer, holding her to just one shot. Rhodes out shot Hendrix 15-5 and held a 14-6 advantage in penalty corner opportunities. The Lynx (3-2, 1-0 SCAC) will host Transylvania (2-3) on Sunday at 11 am.

Playing in its first match in two weeks the Sewanee field hockey team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 3-0 at Transylvania. In that match the Tigers pulled away from Transy in the second half after Ellie Murphy, Cameron Herndon and Elise Landau all found the back of the cage.
