Trinity sweeps defending national champion Emory in South regional semifinal

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The fifth-seeded Trinity University Tigers upset the No. 1 Emory University Eagles - defending national champions, ranked No. 2 in the nation - 25-20, 25-23, 25-19 Friday in the NCAA Division III South Region semifinals at Southwestern University.

Trinity (29-11), will take on No. 2 seed Southwestern at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Robertson Center for the South Region Championship. The winner advances to the national quarterfinals Nov. 19 at University Heights, Ohio.

The semifinals and final are slated for Nov. 20-21, also in Ohio. Southwestern, the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference champion, beat No. 6 Maryville (Tenn.) 3-0 in the other semifinal.

Tiger coach Julie Jenkins, in her 25th season, has guided 18th-ranked Trinity to the Sweet 16 for the 12th time. In Friday's 3-1 first-round win over Randolph Macon, coach Jenkins earned her 700th career victory.

Emory beat Trinity 3-1 in the 2007 Regional final at Sherman, Texas. The Tigers were 3-1 winners in the 2006 Regional Championship, held at Trinity. Emory also had its 13-match winning streak snapped Friday night. Southwestern, ranked No. 12 in the nation, beat Trinity 3-1 in last week's SCAC semifinals, also played in Georgetown.

Tiger first-year outside hitter Madison McMahon, hit .318 in the match, with eight kills, one error and 22 total attacks.

Senior outside hitter Amy Mittelstaedt led the team in kills, with nine. Mittelstaedt also was the digs leader, with 11.

Junior setter Caiti Troyer produced 31 assists and six digs. Junior libero Alexis Edwards had nine digs.

Senior middle blocker Aly Hazelwood recorded a team-best four blocks, and chalked up three aces and five kills. Junior defensive specialist Emily Hilliard fired in a Tiger-leading five aces.

The Tigers hit .448 in the near flawless third set, with 14 kills, one error and 29 total attacks.
