Top four seeds advance to semifinals of SCAC Championship

ATLANTA, Ga. - The top four seeds in the 2009 SCAC Championship tournament advanced to the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 6. Top seed Southwestern University meets fourth seeded Trinity University while second seeded Colorado College entertains third seeded DePauw University.

In its first match, Trinity cruised in its opening set (winning 25-11) against fifth seeded Austin College only to see the Kangaroos win the next two. The Tigers then took 25-16 and 15-10 decisions to advance to the semifinals.

Southwestern earned a semifinal appearance by beating eighth seeded Rhodes College 3-1 in mid-afternoon action. Rhodes won the tournament's opening match 3-0 over ninth seeded Hendrix College.

The host Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels won its first two games over seventh seeded Millsaps College only to see the Majors force a decisive fifth set. The Petrels then hung on winning a 15-11 fifth set. The Colorado College Tigers earned their trip to the semifinals by dispatching the Petrels, 3-0 in the day's final match.

DePauw advanced to the seminfinals with a 3-1 win over the sixth seeded Centre College Colonels. The Colonels were 3-1 winners over 11th seeded Sewanee: The University of the South

With the top four seeds advancing to tomorrow's semifinals, it marks the second consecutive year that the top four reached the semifinal round.

Play resumes tomorrow, Nov. 7 at Dorough Field House on the campus of Oglethorpe University with Sewanee squaring off against Millsaps at 9 a.m. EST along with Austin College taking on Oglethorpe at 9 a.m. EST.
