Oglethorpe’s Rizzo Signs Contract to Play in Continental Baseball League

ATLANTA, Ga. - Oglethorpe University baseball player J.J. Rizzo of Coral Springs, Fla. has signed a 3-month contract with the Desert Valley Mountain Lions of the Continental Independent Baseball League (CBL).

The Continental Baseball League is a professional baseball league with headquarters in Dallas, Texas. The CBL independent league consists of four teams (expanding to six in 2011) which provide elite talent an opportunity to improve their skills and expose their talents to scouts, and if they qualify, eventually move into positions with Major League Baseball affiliated organizations.

Based on Rizzo’s summer performance with the Mountain Lions, he can potentially earn a 1-year income based contract with the CBL for 2011.

The Desert Valley Mountain Lions acquire a player in Rizzo (pictured at right) who starred at in the field at third base and and at the plate for Oglethorpe in a 2010 season that earned him All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team honors.

He started in 40 games for the Stormy Petrels and posted a .344 batting average with a team-leading 40 RBI and 42 runs scored. He connected for 5 homeruns to cap a collegiate career that has him in the top-10 in a myriad of categories for Oglethorpe University in their all-time record books.

Rizzo also starred at Taravella High School in Coral Springs during his prep career.
