Austin College got their first win of the season with a 4-2 victory over Texas Lutheran on Sunday, bringing their record to 1-5 overall this season. The ‘Roos built a 4-0 lead in the game before a pair of late goals by TLU made it a two goal final. The ‘Roos got on the board in the 20th minute when Sam Temple scored off an assist by Jason Replogle, and 10 minutes later Replogle found Chris Melton for another goal. In the second half Alex Dawson scored on a free kick in the 50th minute, and Josh Pollock capped off the Austin College scoring on assists from Luis Castillo and Stephen Crisco before TLU scored twice for the final margin. Jeff Jones made five saves in the net for the ‘Roos in the victory.

Birmingham-Southern went 2-0 this weekend, defeating both Rhodes and Hendrix in Birmingham. Friday against Rhodes the Panthers needed a penalty kick in the 83rd-minute to push past the Lynx in a rain-soaked contest. Sunday went much smoother, with BSC netting a goal in each half and keeping the Warriors off the board completely. With the wins BSC improves to 7-1 on the season. They will be on the road this week, travelling to Sewanee and Oglethorpe. Friday’s match with the Tigers is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and 11:00 a.m. with the Petrels on Sunday in Atlanta.

Centre split a pair of road games this past week in their opening weekend of conference play. On Friday in Atlanta, the Colonels took down a solid Oglethorpe side 3-1, getting two second half goals en route to the win. Then on Sunday, Centre scored 11 seconds into the match but could not hold on for the win as they dropped a 2-1 away decision to Sewanee. The Colonels, 7-3-1, continue SCAC conference play this weekend with two home games against Austin College and Colorado College. The game against Austin College will be the 3rd Annual Susan G. Komen for the Cure game, where both sides help raise money for breast cancer awareness.

Head coach Horst Richardson joined an exclusive group on Saturday when he picked up career victory No. 500. Unfortunately, he wasn’t around to enjoy it. While Colorado College defeated the University of Dallas, 4-0, at Stewart Field to win the 2009 Boddington Memorial Tournament, Richardson was attending the funeral of Chris Quon, a former player who passed away last Sunday. Richardson joins Ohio Wesleyan’s Jay Martin (557), Keene State’s Ron Butcher (545) and Rowan’s Dan Gilmore (514) as the only Division III coaches to reach the milestone. Five coaches at the Division I and II levels also have 500 career victories. Wil Nelp scored the only tally the Tigers would need just 10:28 into the game, putting a header off a crossing pass from Jordan Reese in the net for the first game-winning goal of his career. Matt Fechter had a goal and an assist, while Brendan Douglas and Travis Boccard also scored for the Tigers. Andy McGhie, who made a total of four saves en route to his first career shutout, was not tested until he had to stop Matt Stamper from 10 yards in front of the left post with 1:04 remaining in the opening half. Reese struck for the fifth game-winning goal of his career early in the first half as CC defeated the Milwaukee School of Engineering, 4-1, on Friday. David Van Sicklen and Reese scored in a span of 3:56 to give CC a 2-0 advantage just 13:59 into the game. The winning goal came after Trevor Cobb chipped the ball over the defense and Reese went in alone on MSOE goalkeeper Alex Mejac. Cobb has been involved in 17 game-winning goals during his career, assisting on nine and scoring eight. Fechter added a pair of insurance goals late in the second half. CC travels to DePauw University and Centre College for conference games next Friday and Sunday, respectively.

DePauw opened up SCAC play this past weekend on the road against Sewanee and Oglethorpe. On Friday the DU Tigers got on the board first with a goal from Trent Kirkwood and carried the lead into half. However Sewanee answered with a goal in the second period forcing the game into overtime. Sewanee found the back of the net in the 108th minute of the contest for a tough 2-1 loss. Sunday DePauw bounced back with a 2-1 win against Oglethorpe on a game-winning goal from Beau Song. DePauw will be back in action this weekend hosting Colorado and Austin Colleges.

Hendrix suffered a pair of losses over the weekend with a 1-2 affair against Millsaps on Friday night and a 0-2 contest against Birmingham-Southern College on Sunday afternoon. The Warriors fall below the .500 mark at 4-5 overall and stand at 1-1 in SCAC action. Millsaps College senior defender Brandon Mong scored his first goal of the year, while senior forward Collin Thompson sealed the deal with his third goal of the season to lift the Majors’ past Warriors. Mong scored with 14 minutes remaining in the first half off an assist from first year forward Daniel Moise. Thompson scored just 10 minutes past the break on a rebound from first year defender Taylor Harrison. Warriors’ sophomore forward Duncan Keegan put the ball past the keeper through the lower left slot from about 15 yards out in the 56th minute. Sophomore midfielder Colin Thompson was credited with the assist on the play. Hendrix outshot Millsaps 20-11, however, the Majors made 12 saves compared to the Warriors’ three denials. Panther’s sophomore forward Tyler Evans scored the first goal on Sunday just eight minutes into the men’s game off a cross from the left side, while junior midfielder Tony Crocker scored the second with just 2:53 remaining in regulation off an assist from Evans. Keegan led Hendrix with five shots, two on-goal, and senior defender Thomas Robins added three shots, two on-goal.

Millsaps (6-3, 1-1 SCAC) split its SCAC opening weekend with a 2-1 win Friday night over Hendrix and falling 2-0 to Rhodes on Sunday. Freshman GK Stephen Andrieu went 1-1 in his first two starts between the posts, stopping a career-high 11 shots on Friday and adding four more Sunday in a losing effort. Seniors Colin Thompson and Brandon Mong netted the Majors’ only goals on Friday, as they were shutout for just a second time in the last 14 matches. Millsaps will travel to Oglethorpe and Sewanee this weekend.

Oglethorpe opened up SCAC play at home over the past weekend losing both matches against Centre and DePauw. On Friday afternoon, the Petrels got a late goal in the first half to tie the score up at one going into the break. However Centre posted two unanswered goals to win 3-1. Sunday Oglethorpe jumped out to a one goal lead before the Tigers scored two unanswered goals to steal a win on the road. Oglethorpe will be back in action this weekend as the Petrels host Millsaps and Birmingham-Southern.

Rhodes dropped a hard fought game to Birmingham Southern College Friday night 2-1. The game was played in a downpour most of the first half which made it difficult for both teams to find any rhythm of play. Birmingham Southern scored first when Junior GK Justin Stradley made a save on a shot but could not hold on to the slick ball and the rebound went to a BSC player who put the Panthers up 1-0. Senior Zac berry tied the game 15 minutes later to send the game to the halftime 1-1. The Lynx came out strong and saw 5 chances within 8 minutes but failed to find the back of the net. Late in the game a tumble of bodies at the edge of the box produced a Birmingham Southern penalty kick that was scored to put BSC up 2-1. Rhodes had 2 excellent chances in the closing minutes but could get the equalizer and fell 2-1. The team rebounded well on Sunday at Millsaps College for a decisive 2-0 win. Playing with sunshine and warm weather for the first time in two weeks the team came out strong and scored within 3 minutes. Senior Logan Eberly scored his third goal of the year from Junior Nick Bailey's cross. The Lynx controlled a good part of the game adding an insurance goal in the 67th minute when freshman Jim Thompson found sophomore Ilan Isaacs with a pass in the box for Isaacs first goal on the year. Junior goalkeeper Justin Stradley was credited with his second shutout on the year while making 6 saves on the day.

Sewanee went 2-0 this weekend with a 2OT win over DePauw Friday night and then a 2-1 win over Centre on Sunday. Prior to the weekend, Sewanee hadn't beat DePauw since 2004 and hadn't beat Centre since 2005. On Saturday, in the 108th minute of play, Zack Goodwin (Mobile, Ala./St. Paul's) broke the 1-1 tie with an unassisted goal to give Sewanee the 2-1 edge. On Sunday, Stuart Maxey (Roanoke, Va./Salem) scored the game-winner for the Tigers in the 86th minute. Sewanee is now 6-2 and 2-0 in the SCAC. The Tigers will host Birmingham-Southern and Millsaps next weekend.

Southwestern had a light week of competition with just one game against Rowan University. Southwestern seemed to dominate the game as they took 16 more shots than the Prof’s but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities and fell 1-0. With the contest scoreless throughout the majority of the match, SU was able to apply continuous pressure with a constant barrage of shots, but Rowan’s keeper Cunliffe kept the Pirates at bay recording nine saves on the evening. SU’s defense held off the Prof attack most of the way, but in the 73rd minute Rowan’s Renna scored his first goal of the season to lift the RU to the 1-0 win. The Pirates fall to 4-4 on the season and return to action on Sunday, October 4th when they play host to the University of Dallas at 2:00 pm.

No. 11 Trinity defeated Rowan University 4-0 in its only action last week. Ben Grossman scored a goal and an assist for the Tigers, while Joseph DeCosta nailed the eventual game-winner in the 24th minute of play. Trinity also won 4-0 in the last meeting between the two schools, which came during the 2002 season when Rowan was the nation’s top-ranked team. Trinity will host Division II Incarnate Word Monday night, renewing a friendly rivalry between neighboring schools in the city of San Antonio. The last time these teams met was in 1999, with Trinity taking a 1-0 victory. The Tigers are just 1-3 against UIW under Head Coach Paul McGinlay.
