HERSHEY, Pa. - Centre junior Chris Morris (Maysville, Ky.)
was named to the Division III PING All-American First Team, as well
as being named a Division III Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-American
Scholar. He was also named to the Division III PING All-South
Region First Team for his outstanding play during the 2010
season.
The Centre men's golf team recently competed in the NCAA Division
III Men's Golf Championships in Hershey, Pa. at the Hershey Links
and Hershey Country Club. The event took place from Tuesday, May 11
through Friday, May 14 and Elizabethtown College hosted the
tournament.
Centre finished with a team score of 1215, which tied them for 13th place. On the first day the Colonels recorded a 308, the second day they finished with a 305, in the third round they shot a 304, and on the fourth and final day they had their best score of 298.
Morris took third place in the NCAA Division
III Golf Championships after having his best performance on the
fourth and final day of play as he shot a 67 for an overall score
of 284. He completed the first round of play with a 75, on the
second day he shot a 70, and Morris recorded a 72 on the third
day.
The Colonels made it to the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships
following a win at the SCAC Golf Championships, which took place at
Stone Mountain Golf Course in Atlanta, Ga. from Friday, April 23
through Sunday, April 25. Centre won the tournament with a team
score of 926.
Morris won the tournament as he recorded an overall score of 216.
During the first round of play he shot a 73, on the second day he
finished with a 71, and on the third and final day he recorded a
72. He was named the SCAC Player-of-the-Year for his efforts on the
golf course.
During the regular season Morris competed in the Emory University
Spring Invitational on Monday, April 12 and Tuesday, April 13. The
event took place at the Stone Mountain Golf Course in Atlanta,
Ga. After two rounds of play Morris and Peter Latimer, the
number one NCAA Division III golfer in the country, from Guilford
College were tied for first place. The two players then competed in
a one-hole playoff where Morris would win the tournament. He won
with an overall score of 144. Morris and Latimer each received
medalist honors for their effort on the course.
Centre finished fifth overall at the Emory University Spring
Invitational with a score of 618, beating several top ranked
schools.
Next year the Centre men's golf team will compete in the Gordin Invitational, which is the most prestigious Division III golf tournament in the country. The top 12 to 15 Division III golf teams in the country were invited to the Gordin Invitational. The event will be held in Greensboro, N.C. at the Grandover Resort, which will also host the 2011 NCAA Division III Golf Championships.
