- AROUND THE SCAC -
Austin College made
it's 2009 Homecoming weekend a memorable one with a pair of hard
fought victories over Oglethorpe and Sewanee. The 'Roos topped
Oglethorpe 1-0 when freshman Ryan Elias scored his first career
goal in the second half to lift Austin College to the victory, and
against Sewanee the 'Roos won in dramatic fashion when Sam Temple
scored off of a rebounded shot by Luis Castillo with only 13
seconds remaining in the second overtime period to make it a 2-1
final. Earlier in the match Alex Dawson fed Chris Stein for the
first goal of the game. Grant Gosselin surrendered just one goal
over the weekend, making a total of five saves in the two
matches.
Birmingham-Southern was on Fall Break this week
and did not play any games this weekend. The Panthers’ game
with Maryville College on Thursday night was cancelled due to field
conditions at BSC Soccer Park. BSC will resume play this week with
a mid-weed match with cross-state rival Huntingdon College on
Wednesday before heading to Millsaps on Friday.
Centre split a pair of tough away matches in Texas
this weekend. On Friday night in San Antonio, Centre traveled to
Trinity to battle the nationally-ranked side. In a great match,
Centre gave up a late 84th minute goal to lose a heartbreaker game
1-0 to a talented Trinity side. On Sunday, the Colonels took on
Southwestern in Georgetown, TX, and rebounded for an impressive 1-0
win with a late goal themselves. The win marked head coach Jeb
Burch's 100th career victory. The Colonels, 11-4-2 (5-2-1 in
conference), have an open weekend before taking on
Birmingham-Southern and Millsaps at home the following weekend.
Matt Fechter struck for four scores and an assist as
Colorado College cruised to a 6-1 victory over
Oglethorpe on Sunday. Fechter scored CC’s quickest goal of
the season 2:52 into the contest and notched what proved to be the
first game-winning goal of his career 4:41 later. Fechter completed
his first career hat trick in the 14th minute, CC’s first hat
trick since Sept. 13, 2008, when Brendan Douglas scored three times
during an 11-0 victory over Cornell College. Jordan Reese extended
his assist and points streak to four games and has four goals and
six assists during that stretch. Douglas has four goals and three
assists in the last four games. Fechter scored his fourth goal in
the 66th minute on the rebound of his own shot. Austin Dressen
completed the scoring with his first career goal. Trevor Cobb
scored the game-winning goal in the 64th minute as CC defeated
Sewanee, 4-1, on Friday. Cobb’s goal gave Colorado College a
2-0 lead with just under 26 minutes remaining in the game, but
Sewanee took advantage of a red card on David Van Sicklen with 8:09
remaining in the game and cut its deficit in half. Douglas and
Reese added goals in the final five minutes to seal the victory.
Reese, who gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute, finished
with two goals and an assist. Douglas also had a goal and an
assist. Any McGhie stopped three shots for CC and improved to 2-1
in goal this season. The Tigers play their final non-conference
games of the season on Thursday night and Sunday afternoon,
respectively, when CC faces Ripon College and Carleton College.

win at Southwestern on Friday and a 1-0 loss at 10th-ranked Trinity
on Sunday to move to 8-4-1 overall and 5-3 in the conference. Gary
Pett scored a pair of first-half goals in the win at Southwestern
with the first at 2:53 on Brad Kean's assist and the second at

to 3-0 at 52:43 with an unassisted score. The Pirates scored a pair
of second-half goals, but the Tigers held on for the win.

corners. Nate Sprenkel recorded six saves for DePauw. Trinity's
Alan Castillejos scored the game's lone goal on an assist from Nima
Naderi at 66:25 as the hosts defeated DePauw, 1-0. Trinity held a
7-3 advantage in shots and a 2-1 margin in corners. Ted Jacobi
recorded three saves for DePauw, while Trinity's Patrick Johnson
had three.

resting up for the upcoming SCAC weekend against Sewanee-The
University of the South on Friday night and Oglethorpe University
on Sunday afternoon. The Warriors boast a 7-5-1 overall record and
2-1-1 conference mark. Hendrix head coach Doug Mello will head into
Friday night’s match in search of his 399th career victory as
a men’s coach.
Millsaps fell in its
only competition of the week, losing a 4-1 decision to Haverford
College (Pa.) to drop to 7-6 overall. The Majors scored the opening
goal in the 6th minute from freshman Daniel Moise, but were then
outscored 4-0 the rest of the contest. Millsaps will host
Birmingham-Southern on Friday at 6 p.m.
Oglethorpe lost two conference matches this past
weekend to Austin College and Colorado College. The Petrels were
blanked by the ‘Roos in Fridays contest, 1-0 as Austin got a
goal in the game’s 68th minute to secure the win. On
Saturday, Colorado College raced by Oglethorpe by the score of 6-1,
scoring three first half and three second half goals en route to
the win. The Petrels are now 6-7-1 on the season and will travel to
Rhodes College this coming Friday.
On Saturday, October 17, the Rhodes College
Men’s Soccer team hosted Huntingdon College for their only
match of the week. It was a slow start for the Lynx, and both teams
entered halftime goal-less, but after an inspiring talk from Coach
Marcinko, the guys were firing on all pistons. Zac Berry, who was a
dominant force down the right side of the field all day, started
off the scoring just two minutes into the second half when he
finished a cross from Richie Sewell. It was Zac’s second
game-winning goal of the year, and his fifth goal all together.
Less than ten minutes later, Nick Bailey found Petar Radujkovic,
who put the ball in the back of the net for the second goal. The
game finished 2-0 in favor of the Lynx, and their record goes to
6-5-1. William Lay started in goal for Rhodes, and Zach Fernberger
replaced him for the last thirty minutes of the game.
Sewanee dropped SCAC matches at Colorado College
and Austin College this weekend by scores of 4-1 and 2-1. Sunday's
match went into double OT and Austin's winner came with just 13
seconds left. Stuart Maxey (Salem, Va.) and Watson Hartsoe
(Maryville, Tenn.) scored Sewanee's goals on the week. Sewanee is
now 7-6 and 3-2 in the SCAC. The Tigers will play at Hendrix and
Rhodes next weekend. Austin is now 3-8 and 2-5 in the SCAC.
Southwestern had a tough home stand as they
dropped both contests over the weekend. On Friday’s match
against DePauw, SU got out to a slow start and the Tigers took a
quick lead and extended it through the early stages of the second
half to go up 3-0. The Pirates jumped to action, scoring in the
70th and 75th minute to close the gap to one, 3-2. After a hotly
contested final 15 minutes Southwestern was unable to even the
count. Sunday saw the Pirates locked in an even match through most
of the contest with Centre, but with just over seven minutes
remaining Centre captured the lead on a headed in crossing ball,
winning 1-0. Southwestern falls to 5-8 overall and 1-4 in
conference play. They head to San Antonio, Texas on Saturday,
October 24th to faceoff with conference rival Trinity at 5:30
pm.
